A friend bought this car quite used with the ABS light on, among others. He brought it over and I scanned it, then cleared it. He got a new ABS controller, installed it, and we're still getting codes. I tried to login per the instructions in the wiki with no joy.

As was:

He replaced the wheel speed sensor, but that didn't fix it. Also I saw on a similar post Uwe request block 125. It's ABS 0 / Instruments 1. We checked and made sure the controller is properly plugged in, top and bottom, as well as the wheel speed sensor. Thanks for any help!

What about the harness from ABS 0x03 to sensor?

RTFB the WD please and conduct tests or swap pins from right to left at 0x03 to verify the fault moves or use jumper wire overlay.

Clear the DTC's in gateway 0x19 as they may be sending or preventing the message from vacating in 0x01 since the ABS has failed to complete a self test upon replacement.

I *think* he has the wrong ABS controller. This appears to be a quattro/4-motion ABS module lacking ASR in a front-wheel drive car that's expecting an ABS with ASR (and maybe ESP as well).

Well the cars did come in 4 motion stick 2x2 and yeah ESP......or ASR that ECU supports both coding tables.

Further it is with the same attributes as the 3B0-907-551BS; & that was an unwritten service action internal flash update for CATS and EVAP N80 + Sebastian would always yell at me about when I mentioned it.

Support was for Passat and Audi A6 or A6Q stick or auto.

Braking systems - 1AJ - Anti-spin regulation (ABS/ASR/EDL) with electronic differential lock (EDL)

Repair kit part number for this VIN is 8E0 998 375 J.
Complete kit part number is 8E0 614 111 AQ.

Those part numbers do not cross reference to the installed 8E0 614 111 A unit, so yeah, wrong ABS module has been installed.

Yep. Seen this on the forum five or six times now for the B5/B5.5 Passat, and I don't even follow all threads anymore, it's gotten too busy.

Elaborating on that: every single time we've seen a mismatched module, it's been paired with a front-right ABS sensor code. I don't know what's different about them, but we've seen it with an AWD module in FWD car and also a FWD module in AWD car. I think it's worth adding an annotation to the 00285 article in the Ross-Tech Wiki, something to the effect of "stop and check for ABS module FOD before doing any other diagnostics." I can try to dig up some old examples for evidence if you want.

Thanks for the info, all of you! We'll change out the controller with the right part number and go from there. Damn "Q."

This is what happens when you go down the FOD fork in the road.

You know what ..........?
This bullshit is happening so often lately, I think it's time to start requesting pictures of white tag in trunk, to determine build against auto-scan data as a cross check.
It's what I do in shop.

Jacks Professional Problem Solver Guide. "JPPSG"

Make / Model / Year / and edition.

Step 1 Tag of PR-Build data picture ( Last 6 of VIN can be omitted for privacy )

Step 2 Status of car stock or modified in any way? If so list!

Step 3 "VCDS" COMPLTETE Auto-Scan in code tags!

Step 4 Describe recent repairs or services, problem at hand, and attempts at repair.

Step 5 Are parts OEM or AFT? If so, what and what origin?

Step 6 Identify specific issues to be addressed/concerned about, or say ALL.

Good Information Guideline.

1 Focus discussion on symptom description!

2 Ask questions that clarify what, when, where, and frequency.

3 Summarize your understanding and get agreement in forum.

4 Explain what you will do to proceed and get forum acknowledgement.

5 Do you have a proper repair manual? If not get one!

6 Do you know how to read a schematic? If not see "How to read WD section" or link to Jef.

7 Check part #s are accurate and firmware versions of VCDS + respective controllers are of latest release.

Diagnosing, Brain storming, & the Final Solution!

1 Describe problem ( List known symptoms ) Nix opinions or disguised solutions

2 Verify & Analyze ( Duplicate if possible & list possible causes RTFB the tree & TSB )3 Locate the problem ( Prioritize and identify work times + safety limits and chemicals or tool requirements )

4 Repair the Problem ( Determine the cause & not just treat and effect )

5 Conduct a quality Check of your work and verify you fixed it!
Always follow up reporting back to the Forum to help the next guy.
