Hi there,

have a Audi A6 2012, which the rear wipe starts to wipe intermittent when you put the car into reverse. I would like to disable this function by coding it out. I think it is probably in control module 09 somewhere, but cant find anything in the long coding helper. Any advice ?

Also, in Norway you need to use DRL during daytime. I really do not think you need to have the rear lights on during daytime. But I would like them to be on. Is this possible to code ?

Hi there,

have a Audi A6 2012, which the rear wipe starts to wipe intermittent when you put the car into reverse. I would like to disable this function by coding it out. I think it is probably in control module 09 somewhere, but cant find anything in the long coding helper. Any advice ?

Hi,

(09 - Central Electrics)
rear%20wiping.png.jpg

Might not be in same location in your vehicle, should be in there somewhere. :) (Of course, I am refering to bit 6 on this screenshot)

Also, in Norway you need to use DRL during daytime. I really do not think you need to have the rear lights on during daytime. But I would like them to be on. Is this possible to code ?

Depends on the version of your controller, but check out Controller 09 - Central Electrics, function 10 - Adaptation and check the dropdown "Documented Channels". There could be a feature called "Parking lights with kl. 15 active" or something like that. Setting this to 1 enables rear lights on whenever vehicle ignition is on.

If that option is not there, you should look carefully though the long coding helper, as the option could be there instead; on mine (Passat) it's something like "Energy Saving Taillights", and should be disabled to be on with ignition. But I haven't coded an A6, so I wouldn't know for certain.

Hope it helps,
Nicolai

Thanks for the reply, I will have another look into all the bytes on 09, and see if I missed something the first time.

Regarding long coding (I have never ever changed a long coding before, but I have done coding with the "old short coding"). As long as you have a backup, like this autoscan. If you mess up, can you copy & past the original coding back into the controller to get back to start ? Or do I run the risk of messing up the coding to a point where it becomes hard for me to get it back to start ? I am also a bit afraid of triggering CP. But it might be that if I should run into CP problems (if I lets say code up some equipment which is not installed in the car), that the CP fault code will go away if I put the coding back to start ?

Look into Adaptation-10 > Channel 19

I don't understand why so many, especially Scandinavian countries are focused on this, when the outdoor light decreases (where you need the rear light), you have to turn on your normal light anyway.
But try and test Coding-07 in Byte 02 / 03

For both we are talking Controller [09]

Hi again,

The LCH has a feature called "Back to Standard". In addition, your auto scan serves as a backup. Furthermore, I recommend keeping a "coding log" of the changes you make to your car. It also makes it easier for you to track what you're doing in human language, rather than bits and bytes, so I always keep a simple TXT file for every vehicle I work on, and in that, I write things like [date and time] - Enabling static cornering light via front fog lights, changing 09-byte18-bit2 0 =>1 (for example) and copy/paste pre-change and post-change coding in there.

You always run a risk of messing up your coding, especially when venturing into undocumented testing, however, these changes that you're talking about here are fairly simple and does not involve changing the installed equipment on the car, but only the function of the equipment. You'll get no guarantee from me (and probably not from Ross Tech either), but I don't see any of these coding options as being the least bit harmful.

As for component protection, it is a feature instated in VAG cars to reduce or prevent/deter theft of cars and car parts. It means, that if you install a component in a car, that has already been installed in another car (second hand part), component protection will kick in and limit the functionality of the part. Mostly, this happens if installing new/other control units in the car, and in some cases if coding differently - for instance if you tell the CAN gateway a new control unit is in the car. Component Protection is "checked" every X number of ignition on events, so it doesn't happen constantly. If you're unlucky enough to activate component protection, a dealer can simply deactivate it, as all it requires is for the car to be connected to VAGs central servers to verify/link the control module to the car. This is providing that your installed component isn't on a list of stolen vehicles or control units. Component Protection can disable itself in few instances as well.

It has been done that way to address a rather large problem in Europe, that you may also see in Norway, namely that cars are stolen and exported to other countries (most often in Eastern Europe), where they are parted out and basically sold as spare parts.

I can't see why CP should be activated from these simple changes as you're not exchanging control modules or messing with the gateway, but again, I'm not prepared to offer any guarantees. :D

Many regards,
Nicolai

I had a closer look, and I did not find anything in the long coding helper. But, I found it in the adaption. It seems to be adaption channel 19. Unfortunately, I get a «ERROR: Security access required». Anyone knows this security access code ?

Have you tried using the security access function? :) Open the function/screen, wait a second and VCDS will display what you need.

Hmm, will try again. I tried yesterday, and as far as I can remember, I was asked for some kind of "code", and VCDS told me to contact RT. But I will try again, and report back. If you say that everything I need is in there, you are probably right :)

edit: and off course, you was right. If I had looked a bit closer, the login code was already in VCDS :) Thanks again Sebastian !

And this question leads me to another one:

EGR correction on the ECU. The stored value is 0.0 (mg/stroke). What maximum value can I put into this field to avoid clogging intake, and reduce the EGR as much as possible ? (yeah, I know about pollution, exhaust gas tests etc. this is beyond the scope of this discussion :)).

Go into Select the 09-Cent Elect then Security Access-16. There should be a popup window with a number for you to try to enter.

Thanks for the reply Andy and Sebastian, you where right :)

Do you have any inputs to my question about EGR correction in the ECU ? Or can I just try out a high number, and see how high number the ECU will accept ? (and I guess that a higher number than 0.0 will turn down the EGR ?)

If you don't already know, there are chiptuners that offer "EGR delete" on many VAG engines. They don't have to tune the engine per say, to do it, so if you want that, that is an effective option, as it actually fully closes the valve.

As for correcting it, I would be vary. The EGR valve is (in my opinion) a part that is constructed WAY too delicately for its role. I exchanged one on my old car, and everything in it was plastic. The fault was due to a plastic gear/cog having seized up ever so lightly - barely even noticeable when operating it by hand, but apparently enough to burn the motor. I would have no issue disabling it entirely, but leaving it to run in a different way than intended, I'm not sure it can withstand that. I wish I could remove it on my new car, but it's a petrol direct injection, so the EGR role is managed by the intake valves rather than a separate unit.

I have tested now, and it seems like the maximum setting is 50 (mg/stroke). BUT, everything I adjust on the engine module is lost when I turn off the power and back on (ignition off / on). Anyone knows why ? I also tested "Activation of start-stop function" (I expect this to be the autostop function if you come to a full stop). I set this adaption to "not active". But when I turn the engine off / on, the setting is back to "active" again ??!?

Do you use the exact procedure below;

- Select Adaptation Channel
- Change value as desired
- Click Test
- Click Save
- Exit/Go back

?

No I do not, because on this module (UDS) there is only "Do It!" button !

But the module accepts the adaption. I tried again now, and when I putted in 10, it seems like the ECU remembers the adaption, even when the ignition is cycled. I will see if the ECU will loose the adaption again.

But for the deactivation of the start/stop system, the ECU loose the adaption when you cycle the ignition. I have also found the start/stop function several places. At least on the ECU and also on the CAN gateway. Anyone knows where I should disable it ? I have tryed both, but the start/stop system is active again when you cycle the ignition.

It seems like the ECU now remembers the EGR adaption. But as far as the start/stop function goes, it does not remeber the adaption. Anyone knows why ?

Start/Stop is typically not something that can be disabled via diagnostics in a straightforward manner. I suspect that's because the car was certified for emissions (and counted in the manufacturer's fleet average) with that system active.

Ok, but is there any way to disable it with VCDS, even if it is not straight forward ? :) Actually, I do not want to disable the system, what I want is to reverse the logic, so that the system is by default disabled, and if you push the button, it is enabled. We are living in a small village with aprox. 300 people, and if you come to a completed stop in this area, it is to let one car pass or something. And to have the engine turn off in this situation is just stupid. The nearest traffic light is something like 2 hours drive away :) But if its not possible to reverse the logic, is it then possible to deactive the system ?
