One fine day I opened my van to be met with flashing hazard lights, a wiper stalk which turns on the horn- I don't recall what the horn now does! Alarm going off constantly too. Central locking does still work fine. Engine starts no problem but still hazard lights, alarm etc continue to do what they want.

The van has had a genuine cruise control retrofitted by me some years ago.

I will of course check fuses and I've ordered a secondhand J519 (address 09) for a quick test once coded.

The power cable to the module under the drivers seat (address 46?) was sorted a few years ago.

From experience, I know J519 faults can lead you down abstract avenues....the last one being to a vacuum valve failure on the 4motion diff lock of all things.

I'm away for a few days so I am gathering info so that hopefully upon my return I can hit the ground running and get the van back on the road again.

Any thoughts/pointers appreciated.

Hello,

Any thoughts/pointers appreciated.

I bet it rains where you are... ;) I would check for possible water damage, corrosion, etc... with the connectors and the controller (that controller looks like the old Passat/A4 type, it lived in a swimming pool when it rained :P )

You can also check the Measuring Value Block group [015] in the [46-Central Conv.] to see the last 'Alarm Sources'.
Field 1 to 4 will show you the history of what triggered the alarm. Use the mouse to hover over the field you want more information about.

Of course this all depends if the source of the alarm was real.

Hope that helps,

drpeter

Time for a BCM but before you change it............ take apart and tank it, bake it and re-flow solder after cleaning water ingress/corrosion FOD with sanding pen and give it a shot.....

- This absolutely works, well at least it did on my 1996 GTI ECM, ;)

I would try that for sure!

Great suggestion - Let us know what happens.

Hi- thanks for the suggestions. I managed to find a cheapish secondhand J519 on ebay and did a swap. Solved all the problems. Fault scan is now clear.

I would like to get the old one repaired if at all possible to have as a spare. I don't have the skills to re-flow solder; does anyone know if repairs of these units are completed by anyone? It must surely be a component or joint failure as you suggest.

Here are some photos of the faulty J519 inside and out. No visible damage except some tiny white blemishes on the surface. I can't see there is any water damage given it is mounted above the driver pedals away from any water ingress issues.

I decided that after reading the above links, the failure mechanism appears to be most likely relay related. To that end, despite the cost and already being up and running with a secondhand unit I've bought a new J519 to hopefully make sure my next failure isn't anytime soon.

I therefore now have three J519 units: one failed, one working with the same part number and then the new one.

The new J519 part number is 7H0 937 049 AE

Here are some photos of the new unit:

KeDtive.jpg

So by way of comparison with the last image, here is a component view of the old unit too:

sinavlV.jpg

I can see little if any difference and indeed exactly the same circuit board reference marked on both old and new units i.e. A153.5.1Z.g

There are component differences- there is one extra relay in the new version. I can also see a couple of what I think are surface mount diodes are now a different type too.

I intend to dismantle the old failed unit and replace the mostly likely relay to have failed and see what I can discover. From the other links, it appears the wiper and horn relays are favourites to fail.

Here is your repair.
Indeed water ingress maybe from leak or water over condensing in cabin.....add desiccant to cabin!

Jack- yes I think this is very likely- I hardly use the van and it has been sitting outside in our mild winter here in southern England. I noticed a lot more condensation than normal inside the van after some colder then warmer weather. I ended up leaving the front windows open about 20mm with wind deflectors to shed the rain which worked wonders in clearing the condensation but of course it had been standing for sometime before this was done.

Perhaps unrelated, but perhaps not, I added a Rolls Series 5 S12-290 AGM (slight overkill for my fridge) leisure battery inside the back last year which is charged via solar panels and an MPPT charge controller. It strikes me that this battery must vent when it is charged and so would generate water vapour in greater volumes than before. I might take a closer look at the charge controller....

Consider a fan or the blower motor being wired like an A8 via solar panel, to circulate air or venting the battery + heat of charger to external source outside the vehicle with its own air inlet & outlet.

People and the OEM often negate a proper board sealer!

Ok, I'm not sure if this is related or whether I should start a new thread but now I have installed the brand new J516 module and coded it, I seem to have a new fault. I've tried re-installing the secondhand J519 module but now both this and the new one display the same faults.

No matter what I do, if I clear the codes, they keep coming back :banghead:- see address 17 and address 19:

I've had a good check through the cables and connectors I disturbed when fitting the J519 to see if there is any visible damage or corrosion but all seems fine. The battery voltage is fine. Everything works without any issues.

I've read the wiki page and had a quick dig online but no one seems to really put their finger on a cause.

Any suggestions appreciated.

This means one of the CAN wires is disrupted.
Isolate the twisted pairs from gateway to BCM or suspect faulty gateway.

thanks Jack- seems to be solved....

I disconnected the battery, the new J519, reconnected the J519, then the battery, then turned on the ignition and scanned- cleared the address 19 fault code, found no fault on address 17, ignition off and on, checked addresses 19 and 17 - NO FAULTS :)

So I turned it all off and ran away quickly.

Hopefully I find the same clean slate in a few days.

I'll update when the relays arrive to try and fix the old J519 module.

thanks for all the help everyone.
