Haven't posted here in a while. This is my 2007 VW "Passetta" with 2.5L engine swap ... hence I've posted my problem here.

I haven't really been driving the car much, just trying to get some things finished up before I sell it. The last thing done was the 12-Warranty body and paintwork at the dealer ... got it back about a week ago from some touch-up work.

The car has run fine, no problems ... I try to drive it at least once a week. I've got about 12,500 miles on the swap now.

Two days ago, I went to start it and drive it for a while ... RED steering light shows up on the dash! ... NO power steering! Drove it down the road ... still nothing. Disconnected the battery and let it sit a while ... reconnected and still nothing.

I've never had any problems with the steering on this car, and although I've changed and modified a lot of things ... I've never touched the steering or it's circuits, so I'm not really familiar with it.

Any ideas? ... Where is the steering control module? ... is it common for them to just up and quit? ... I'm thinking possibly a corroded electrical connection somewhere?

The following day I ran a VCDS scan .... (don't let the 1K0 chassis throw you ... remember it's a "Passetta") ...

Can the module be replaced without replacing the entire rack? From what I've read, you've got to drop the rear of the subframe to get the steering rack out.

I was going to check all the connections for corrosion first ... can the connections be accessed / disconnected without dropping the subframe or removing the rack?

Rack = Module

Pretty straightforward code, for replacing rack.

See if you can fit one from a Touareg :D Hahaha! Joking.

It's not actually that bad of a job, but lots of the subframe bolts are stretch bolts, and are supposed to be replaced. Manual covers which ones.

Unfortunately, the only manuals I have are a Bentleys Service Maunal for Mk5 Jetta 2005-2010. and a Chilton's for Jetta Mk5. And since you mention fitting one from another car ... it DOES look like the Jetta Mk5 Steering Rack is the same as the B6 Passat ... Part No: 1K1 909 144 K.

Sooo ... I've already got a Jetta, Engine, ECU, TCM, ABS, CANbus, and Instrument Cluster ... might as well try a Jetta Mk5 Steering Rack too! (If I can't find one from a B6 Passat)!

I've definitely got to go used ... because of my budget. Probably do it early next month.

Thanks for the help!

Hi, Yes Passat uses same rack. But different cars have different steering map. Early GEN1 racks had that switchable via adaption.

Later Gen2 and Gen3 need flashing with Dealer tool or similar.

Ok, so I've had a PAINFUL kidney stone ... and haven't been able to work on the car.

But today, I had a "moment of betterness" ... so I checked the Measuring Blocks in Address 44- Steering Assist ... I made a screen shot of Group 2 (I know, I should have saved it as a file)

Here are the readings in the four boxes in Group 002 ... with the engine RUNNING ...

Voltage Supply
-----8.50 V ------------- 13.90 V -------------- 5.08 V --------------- 0
Relay Voltage --------- Voltage --------- Sensor Supply---------- Battery
---------------------- (Terminal 30)------------ G269 ----------- Disconnected

Should the forth box read "0"? ... should it say "Battery Disconnected"?

Could it be a fuse problem in the fuse box under the hood?

Anybody?

What should a "normal" reading be, with the engine running, for a B6 Passat / Mk 5 Jetta; Address 44 - Steering Assist > Measuring Blocks > Group 002 > box 4?

Just wanted to finalize this ...

I just wanted to finalize this thread.

Yesterday, I finally got back to working on this. I had some other things to do. I finally got a full Jetta Mk5 MFD instrument cluster and ignition key (to deactivate the immobilizer) ... so I installed it first ... no problems, works great ... and all the functions work great.

Then I wanted to first check the steering circuits for corrosion and such. I unplugged the steering 3-wire / 4-prong connector on top of the driver's frame rail, below the left headlight. No visible corrosion ... but I plugged it and unplugged it a few times, and put Deoxit on the pins.

Then I removed the steering motor ground wire on the transmission ... checked for corrosion, reconnected, and tightened. Finally, I checked the steering motor positive lead on the front of the fuse box (second from left - looking from the front), and replaced the 8--Amp fuse mounted on the two studs.

I put everything back together and VOILA! ... I've got power steering again. I had to go through all the steering and ABS Basic Settings again ... but everything works fine ... and no dash lights!

I drove it all day today with no problems!

What could have caused it? ... I don't know, but I've washed my engine bay at the car wash on more than one occasion (corrosion?)... and I had all the A-Fuses on the front of the under-hood fuse box, apart on more than one occasion ... I could have cracked the 80-Amp fuse wire when I tightened it.

I don't know but I'm GLAD I didn't have to change the steering rack!

Thanks to those who responded!
