Greetings

2008 Jetta 2.5 with Red steering failure light
-yellow light once occurred a few weeks ago, but went away
-stock, unrelated evap solenoid replaced some time between yellow and red lights

What I have done:
-Ran Auto Scan
-started the forum search process
-measured battery voltage 11.38 12.38v
-checked F2 on distribution box
-removed battery/battery box (before scan) to physically inspect rack harness

Looking for VCDS pointers to distinguish/troubleshoot between rack failure and other failure modes.

If the fault code below does NOT clear, this could be an indication of a failing J500-Power Steering Control Module/V187-Electro-Mechanical Power Steering Motor. This appears to be a Generation 2 J500, if it does get replaced with a new unit, this Ross-Tech wiki page may help.

The suggestion of clearing codes, the other strange original codes (SRS/ign switch) combined with original multimeter reading and subsequent voltage logs directed me to something else. The second session was on a 24hr charged battery and a 13.6v/5amp power supply. The 11/2013 H5 battery was then replaced with 4/2018 german H6 agm, as it tested @ 350cca.

The G85 immediately accepted, but the steering stop struggled repeatedly. I eventually traced this to being 1 or 2 seconds short on the stop-holds.



I *suspect* it may have lost G85 when the yellow light came on. Why it was allowed to limp for 1 week, I am not sure. At some point, likely due to weak battery, it finally decided to cut power to J500/V187 and trigger the open circuit code. Based on my limited interpretations of SSP317, I fully believe the open circuit code was caused by decisions made by J500.

Or this was a pure fluke that these other faults were caught, and the steering failure will come back.

Resolved

1 week update, resolved. Fresh battery. Buy a load tester, watch the engine off scan voltages.

Have rescanned, but am spending more time practicing datalogging to confirm N280 failure. Found logging group 2, 3, 6 in HVAC over extended drive, is revealing. Confirms manifold gauge set.
