Uwe - what am I missing: the VCIconfig doesn't see the interface, it's just a bunch of blank fields.

Shaun - No LEDs, as it's not plugged into the vehicle. No, it doesn't show up in device manager.

What kind of interface do you have, a HEX-NET/V2 or a HEX-USB+CAN? VCIConfig only works with the newer HEX-NET and HEX-V2 interfaces.

A HEX-NET (or a HEX-V2, for that matter) should at least one LED lit or flashing even without power from the car; power from USB is enough.

FWIW, I don't see a HEX-NET in mcheng's customer record, only a HEX+CAN from 2013.

Sorry, Correction: it's Hex+Can.

:banghead:

Split from this thread because a HEX+CAN is a totally different animal than a HEX-NET.

Plug your HEX+CAN into a car. Unlike a HEX-NET, it needs power from the OBD-II side in order to do much of anything, including a firmware update.

Please tell us the behavior of the LED when you plug it into a car, and with it plugged into a car, do [Options] -> [Test] in VCDS and tell us the exact results.

Plugged it into the car, LED red, then green. Test returned this error message: Ross-Tech USB Interface not found! USB Library Version: 03.02.07 Interface: Not found.

You don't out of luck. Ross-tech has the option of "flat-rate" repairs at a good price. Do not worry. You can also "change" your interface for a newer generation, e.g. V2. ;)

Red, then Green means it's got valid firmware in it.

Does it show in Windows' Device Manager when you plug it in to your computer (no car needed for this test).

It doesn't show in DM. When I re-installed VCDS, there was a window that said installation of the driver was successful. All other USB devices are working fine.

It is possible that only the cable is broken. Do you have the capability to check it?

Yep; first thing I'd do is open it up and check the integrity of the four wires between the USB cable and the board.

Update: from plug to board, all four wires are good. But why isn't the driver installing correctly? I've tried on two different computers and Windows versions.

If nothing shows up in Device Manager, there's nothing for the driver to associate itself with.
