A8 D3 MMI Car menu unable to access

Hello everyone, this is my first post as well as my first time using the Hex-Net VCDS. Prior I have always used my Snap On Modis Ultra, but for my Audi, the Hex-Net is a far superior product! I have a 2004 A8L and didn't realize my sunroof leaked until after returning from out of town my center console cupholders were full of water. The car started and everything seemed fine until I noticed that there was no response from any buttons on the MMI control panel. When I returned home I pulled out the entire panel and let it dry, then cleaned up any residue with alcohol. I reinstalled it and still the same, no buttons worked and stayed lit even when the car was not running. Like a fool I disconnected the battery and have not been able to correct the blinking red Brake light, other then by removing the 2 30Amp fuses in the trunk so I could at least drive it without the ear piercing sound from the parking brake warning. So I bought a used control panel from Ebay. I confirmed it was the same part number as my original one. I installed it and everything except the "Car" and "Return" buttons work. I took it back out and disassembled it to see if there was a physical issue with the buttons. The gel pad is good and the buttons are pressing down the contacts on the circuit board, so there seems to be no physical issue with the buttons. I searched through the posts and saw there were a few others that had issues with the "Car" button but the thread seemed to end with no solution due to no input from the person who posted the issue.

Anyones help would be very much appreciated and please keep in mind I am still getting familiar with the Hex-Net. Below are the results from the scan I ran.

Is the coding correct? Correct part number does not equal correct coding (and adaptations for that matter).

Reading the OP I dont assume you have a scan of the car with the previous module installed. If you did make a scan before (should be in the /logs folder or /scans), copy the coding of the old module and put it in the new one.

If you don’t have a scan, first thing i’d try is connecting the old module back to the car and see if you can open the controller in vcds, then copy the coding and do an adaptation channel map.

If that also doesn’t work, then the fine folks at Ross-Tech might have some example codings of said module, provided you can post a picture of the PR-code sticker which usually resides on the floor of the trunk (under the carpet) or the first page of the manual that came with the car.

Edit: the car is 2004, so only fixing the coding should probably do it.

Have you looked at MVB 017 in the working 07: Control Head?

The bits in that field 1 correspond to the buttons as follows:

Probably, but it could very well be that the unit sends different commands via the databus depending on the coding.

Thank you for the response, I will check that, however as mentioned earlier I am still getting familiar with the VCDS and am not quite sure as to how to do that. Seems as that would be in the long code helper? if so I have been unable to access it for control head-07. I was able to pull the map.

Please check the MVB I told you about in post #7 while pressing and releasing the various buttons. If you can see the state of the CAR and RETURN buttons change, then you know the problem is not with the buttons themselves.

Sorry about the delayed response,,,,,,work always gets in the way of things........ Anyway I did check the MVB and could NOT see the status of the CAR and RETURN buttons change. As indicated I did a physical inspection (even removed the circuit board) and all of the buttons are physically working.

If you look at my post #9 could the "?" in the part number have anything to do with it?

Also wondering should I recode the battery? When I had the water damaged old MMI control panel still installed I disconnected the battery for a few minutes. When I reconnected the battery I didnt notice any difference but that was with the water damaged control panel still installed

Bad button?

Here is the log file from the control head and it does indicate a fault. I have also posted the label file with the measuring blocks, coding and adaptation. Given that I replaced the damaged MMI control panel with a used one (same part number), is it possible that it needs to be adapted? The CAR and RETURN buttons do nothing at all. I have ran across information that indicated that the control head needs to read the eprom from the control panel. Any and all help/suggestions would be very much appreciated

As a follow up to all who have helped me on this post. You were correct, it was a faulty circuit board from the used part I bought. I have since then bought a new aftermarket circuit board for $79 which I was skeptical about but it was $300 less then the cheapest used one I could find. I am HAPPY to report it works!! the only difference is the volume control is not as precise as the original but I still have the volume button on my steering wheel.
