I've got a 2007 VW Passat Wagon with a 2.5L 5-Cyl. installed in place of the original (failed) 2.0t FSI. I've posted here because the engine / intake system / ECU is completely stock 2.5L Jetta. If you'd rather I post this in retrofits ... I can do that.

I keep getting a P2279 engine code (Leak in Air Intake System) ... I can clear the code and the car is fine for about a week ... then the code reappears.

I've done an internet search, and I keep coming up with the common problem for these engines, failed PCV diaphragm ... but I've already replaced the PVC with a Dorman unit. I've visibly checked all the vacuum tubes and hoses ... the intake manifold gaskets are new ... I can see no visible tears or damage to the intake tube ... and the air filter element was recently replaced. The intake system is stock factory.

What's strange is, based upon the freeze frame data ... it always seems to happen when the engine is near idle speed (670 RPM) ... and the car is moving, but very slowly (16-22 kph / 10 - 15 MPH). Almost like it's happening when I just begin to accelerate from a dead stop.

I've read where a throttle body can cause this ... although I've gone through the adaption process (with VCDS) for the throttle body.

The car runs and idles fine ... starts fine, and gets great gas mileage. Any other ideas? Anyone else ever have this problem with the 2.5 engine where it was NOT the PVC diaphragm?

Here's the typical fault code I'm getting ...

Readiness: 0000 1100 <<<<<<<<<<<< See this?
It tells me that the SAI & EVAP/LDP are incomplete.

Crimp off the N80 hose to isolate and see if the test prevents that DTC at idle offset as you aforementioned when it happens.

In addition to Jack's N80 isolation (which is the best case intermittent false air leak) I would suggest checking the rear main seal and the oil separator (at the oil filter housing which is the other half of the PCV). Neither of those are great scenarios but:

If the rear main seal is leaking that would need to be resolved. Although it isn't as common on the 2.5L those are the same design that like to shoot out of the holder on the notorious 2.0T. Jack may have pics to share but all I have to offer is 2.0T specific: http://forums.ross-tech.com/showthread.php?2612-TFSI-Oil-leak-Not-a-VCDS-related-question-or-is-it. Sometimes rear main seals can suck in un-meetered air without leaking a drop of oil. In those cases you have to use propane (or similar) while watching fuel trims in MVB 033 and having an assistant hold the RPMs up to see if rich spikes are picked up.

P.S. If the connections near the TB tube have not already been ruled out, make sure there aren't any air leaks such as the SAI hose.

Yeah I was considering the seals and the oil separator Dana but it is very rare it fails sporadically ......the intake boots and SAI path under load offset make a ton of sense to me though.
This is why I added PSI gages to blocks to monitor gases in my experiments of oil consumption "blow by" but also the inverse indicator as a combination vacuum gage.

I find this very helpful for diagnosis......

Thanks Jack, probably won't get back to it until Monday ... the car's getting the headliner redone right now. Will post the results after I check it ... the code usually takes a while to show up again.

I agree the N80 purge valve is a great place to start. Due to the fact they are cheap, easy to replace, and have a very high failure rate, you might just replace it, if you haven't already done so. They tend to get contaminated due to charcoal ingress from the charcoal canister, and consequently have a tendency to fail intermittently, or partially. You could try pulling it off and seeing if you can blow through it. If you can push any air, its bad. I am pretty sure I've had this same fault, without the Evap flow code (P0441??) you would expect to see accompany it, due the nature of the partial failure. Also, I have been bitten by the Dorman diaphragm. Now, I just bite the bullet and get the genuine assembly. (if this is if its the same style I'm thinking of) Hope this helps...

What was really confusing about this is ...

What was really confusing about this is ... both the Jetta and the Passat have 3 lines going to the rear of the car near the Coolant bottle ...

For the B6 Passat, from rear to front they are:

A-Fuel Line
B-EVAP N80 Line
C-Breather Vent Line from manifold

But for the 2.5L Jetta, from rear to front they are:

A- Fuel Line
B-Breather Vent Line from manifold
C-EVAP N80 Line

After I discovered this, I checked my lines several times ... and even took photos at the wrecking yard of both Passat and Jetta to make sure I had them connected correctly ... they are. You would have thought that VW engineers would have been more uniform in their connections!

I did notice on the 2006 2.5 Jetta at the wrecking yard that one of the plastic line colors (coming from the rear) was green ... the other was white ... and the third I believe was the fuel line. But on my Passat 2.0t, there is no green line. I also noticed (at the wrecking yard) that the hoses had colored stripes I believe. Unfortunately, when I purchased my 2007 Passat, much of it was torn apart and in boxes, and some parts were missing ... so assembly was kind of a guessing game.

If the fuel line was incorrectly connected, obviously, the car wouldn't run ... and I DID try switching the other two lines initially ... but the car wouldn't idle right, and I got an INSTANT P2279 code. From looking at Bentley's and from the photos I took at the wrecking yard, I believe the connections are correct now.

I just had to take a three-hour round trip today, mostly freeway ... the car ran great, and I got no codes. While I was on my trip, I did stop at the wrecking yard and picked up a used N80 from a 2006 Jetta 2.5 ($5). And I tried blowing through it ... no air either way so I assume it's good.

Monday I'll crimp off the N80 first ... and see what happens.

I pinched off the N80 hose today ... I'm driving it and we'll see what happens.

By the way, since the existing hoses that I mentioned before (EVAP, Fuel, Vent) were from the original 2.0t engine and I had to slice them ... I picked up the three good hoses from the same 2006 Jetta 2.5 at the wrecking yard and installed them last Saturday, along with the N80 Valve. (When I removed the vent line, I DID see that the Passat chassis line from the rear was green ... I couldn't see it with the hose on).

I STILL got a P2279 code within a couple days though ... so obviously, the N80 valve ... or the rubber hoses weren't the problem.

OK, I pinched off the N80 line yesterday, then drove the car for the last two days ... P2279 code showed up again today, as well as P0441 code (which I would expect). So, what does that tell me?

Here's the latest scan this afternoon ...

Now you need to isolate the intake for other gases at the VC or are they getting there directly through the gases of the engine.

Plugging off the intake and isolating the PCV from it should net a result now keep N80 crimped and commence a reset of DTC's to see if we can vacate the intake leak code.

Yes good we should see the N80 code.........

Additionally a crimp bypass to isolate the LDP maybe required to.

Jack, it's my understanding that the ECU compares readings from the MAP Sensor, MAF Sensor, and O2 Sensors ... and compares them to determine if there's an intake leak (P2279) ... is that the way it works?

Just trying to understand how the P2279 is generated.

I understand that the LDP is strictly for the EVAP system.

Nope..........you're missing stuff in your process of understanding.

Time to form a proper baseline for education level.

Go read design and function SSP + RTFB.

In addition watch some RT videos or go search YouTube.......BOSCH SSP Yellow books from Robert Bentley too.

If you don't realize that the LDP and that the EVAP use vacuum; that will indirectly cause air leaks, we have issues and the only thing the LDP shares with EVAP is the readiness bit or DTC identifiers.

EVAP measures gases flown into the engine directly by charcoal canister via the N80 and measured by the rear OXS.

LDP measures the loss of gasses which escape the fuel tank directly such as a hole in tank or gas cap etc..
LDP additionally uses vacuum to drive the LDP pump. This is done to achieve the PSI in tank & to test for a leak, with its combined reed and other sensors or valves depending on design.

The point is anywhere false air can be had.......... is a potential leak area and must be isolated by bifurcating the systems to achieve the diagnosis.

OK, today I removed the plastic tube going from the valve cover PCV ... to the intake manifold. (I noticed there was a small amount of oil in the tube - probably from when the original PCV diaphragm failed). Then I ran an open breather hose from the valve cover PCV port to near the bottom of the transmission (didn't want to blow oil all over my engine :+)

Then I plugged off the intake manifold port and cleared the codes (I left the N80 pinched off) ... I'll drive it and see what happens.

Should I clean the MAP sensor in the Intake Manifold? ... if the breather tube was oily, the MAP might be covered with oil too (don't know if that can affect it's ability to "read").

No P2279 Code so far ...

Ok, after two days of driving with the breather tube removed and intake port plugged ... no P2279 code. I DID still have the N80 pinched off, so naturally, the P0441 returned. I'll continue to drive the car and check again tomorrow evening ... but so far, no P2279.

I DID do the "remove the oil cap when running" test (before I removed the breather tube) ... and the vacuum seemed normal to me. And the SAI pump and lines are still connected, so I assume they're not the source of the P2279.

So does that mean that the valve cover / PCV still has issues?

Here's the last P0441 code from yesterday ...

Yup .... And is the reason I made that other thread.
OP Now are you seeing the importance of isolation?

I see ... so many possible sources, you've got to do a process of elimination ... thanks Jack!

So I'm wondering if it's the breather hose itself, or the valve cover/PVC? I could simply run a tight-fitting hose for the breather tube just to eliminate that. And why is the P2279 always set at almost idle speed, or when the car's just beginning to move?
