My wife's 2008 Audi A4 Quattro 2.0T was out with my son, and came back with a check engine light.

Upon logging the HEX-NET and my iPhone into the same wireless network in infrastructure mode, I found that the HEX-NET could ONLY read non engine related data. Attempting to read OBDII yielded a # 33 Time out Error after three tries at obtaining the data. The DTCs could not be erased and I have no idea what DTCs there in reality are since Common sensors in the range from 01-Engine to 03-ABS cannot be read. Running a full diagnostic yields results starting with 08-Auto HVAC to the end of the scan. I tried everything short of disconnecting the A4's battery, because I don't know where the zRadio Code is.

This is the only Audi running now out of three while the two others are waiting for parts. I would like to find out what is throwing the OBDII check engine code.

Here is the last scan, THE ENTIRE SCAN...in reviewing all of the past scans that were still available, I realized that the HEX-NET has not been reading any OBDII data:

Is it safe to assume that hitting 01-Engine directly also gets you nowhere?

Have you previously been able to get data from the engine in this car?

I sent the message below, then visited AudiWorld to check on a post there. I noticed that there was a mid-year production split in the A4 in 2008, which started the B8 Chassis run. I went out and tried again and started with a cold engine. Before starting the car I plugged in the HEX-NET, logged into my network, started up VCDS Mobile on my iPhone, started the car and began a session using the B8 Chassis. After doing that I was able to run a full diagnostic, and found the DTC to be an implausible signal regarding the cooling system.

I was able to read the DTC in the appropriate section of VCDS Mobile, checked for pending codes and then cleared the DTC. A second run of the diagnostic yielded no DTCs and no Pending DTCs. I then tested the manual reading section of VCDS Mobile and was able to check individual locations without difficulty. I waited till the engine temperature was up to 77°C and started another diagnostic run. At this point I could not read the Gateway or choose a manuel selection of the Vehicle. I turned the car off and waited 15 seconds. Restarted the car, and was then able to make a manual choice of the vehicle. I stared another diagnostic session to ascertain if I could read locations 01, 02, and 03. All were accessible.

The only remaining question is whether or not the original issue of not being able to read Engine codes was the choice of the B6-B7 A4 Vehicle or a high temperature condition in the car that somehow affected the connection to the engine ECU.

I will report on this when I have the car up to full operating temperature after a trip.

Yes, but only the very first time I ran a diagnostic on it before we purchased the car. At that time I used the HEX-CAN USB device. But, I don't think it is a device related issue [HEX-NET vs HEX-CAN USB], because the HEX-NET device works perfectly on my son's 2008 A6. I cannot recall anything that may have happened that would cause the discrepancy between the use of the one device over the other.

Reflecting a bit on your Auto-Scan and the fact that this is a 2008 A4, it looks like the stuff that isn't talking are the modules on the powertrain CAN bus in that car. Unlike just about every other VW/Audi model that uses CAN for diagnostics, the B7 A4 does not have a proper CAN gateway; instead it exposes the powertrain CAN bus directly at the diagnostic connector. The modules that are talking are all on K-line.. Since you say the HEX-NET works fine on a 2008 A6, I think we can eliminate something like a bad CAN tranceiver in the HEX-NET. So in a likelihood, the powertrain CAN bus in the car is unhappy somehow. Since the Instrument Cluster talks, go there and have a look at MVBs 125 and 126 and let us know what you see there.

I'll give this a try, but would you please enlighten me on the steps I need to take in order to access that info?

In VCDS:
[Select]
[17-Instument Cluster]
[Measuring Blocks]
Look at Groups 125 and 126

In VCDS-Mobile:

[Select]
[17-Instument Cluster]
[Functions]
[Advanced Measuring Values]
Scroll down to the stuff marked [loc 125-1] through [loc 126-4] and select all 8
[Submit]
