Hi everybody, this is my first post. I've been trying to figure out what's wrong with this 07 Continental, the control head screen, radio, hvac is all integrated into one unit (J523) and it is not turning on leaving all the controls for the system unresponsive - hvac, audio, screen, nothing happening here. The vehicle had an aftermarket radio installed before, a stereo specialist removed and returned wiring back to factory. I have double checked the wiring and it all seems to be correct. I have verified power and ground at J523 and NAV, they are ok. There is no light on the optic bus at J523 or NAV control module. I have attached a screenshot of a CAN scope on the NAV unit (connector unplugged), also a vehicle scan (after complete fault clear and ignition cycle a few times). I plan on scoping both CAN buses at J523 and uploading them as well but I have a few other vehicles that need attention right now. Will update soon.

If anybody has any ideas please fire away!

ebiggs, does it seem the LCD only is dead and can you control the radio volume, etc? Or does the bentley logo show up and the LCD screen and the controls don't work?

If it's the LCD screen itself, check the 28 pin ribbon cable and the 10 pin power cable. The 28 pin cable is the RGBs (vga) signal and pins 1 and 2 of the 10 pin cable provide power to the screen and should measure 5V once the door handle is pulled (this is the trigger to turn on the lcd panel). These are typically disconnected on aftermarket lcd / head unit installs. I myself have replace the stock bentley screen with a 1200x800 unit but preserved the factory look and screens by having that come into a vga input that can handle rgbs and can switch over to a HDMI car pc input with android/waze/spotify/gps/android auto/torque obdII/my 30GB music collection/front and rear cams/etc. so that I get new functionality at the press of a button and can switch back to stock (other than LCD panel) anytime.

If the LCD works (startup logo shows, etc) and the buttons are non-responsive, then the unit itself may be at fault.

A certain 'cyclonic' VW forum has lots of guys who work on the J523 units, which is electronically the same one that's in the VW Phaeton / Bentley Continental ~2003-2010.

One thing you can do is after the car's been on, press the lower right of the unlabeled buttons twice to get past the nag screens and then hit FM and see if it's backlight turns from white to yellow, and finally turn up the volume using the steering wheel and hit the arrow forward to seek stations. Since the bentley starts up with volume down, you can check with a CD or other source as well. This will tell you if the audio portion/buttons are working and just the screen isn't working.

Hi, just to through out some more helpful information.... You can use VCDS to view the live, current status of any CAN-Bus controller communication in the Gateway controller's Measuring Value Blocks.

Powertrain CAN-Bus MVBs = [125 to 129]
Comfort CAN-Bus MVBs = [130 to 139]
Infotainment CAN-Bus MVBs = [140 to 149]

A value of [1] = CAN-Bus communication with that particular controller is normal.
A value of [0] = No CAN-Bus communication, controller is installed
A blank value = Controller is NOT installed

With the Key-On go to the [19-Gateway] controller, select [Meas. Blocks-08] and then enter the desired [Group] number, press [Go!]

In this case I would use MVB-[135], field (2) = Display Control, Front (J523)
