Hello, I have a 2006 Audi A4 2.0T FWD with the CVT transmission. It has 131,000 miles.

I have VCDS and it is pulling two codes

16684/P0300/000768 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
16685/P0301/000769 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected

Symtoms:

The car starts without too much hesitation, but when cold the whole car shakes pretty hard. I believe it is definitely running on 3 cylinders when cold. But once the car warms up, it doesn't shake anywhere near as bad and drives okay. There is still hesitation but the vibration is reduced greatly, and I was able to drive it 30 miles home without much of an issue. I've drove a Toyota Camry before with only 3 of 4 cylinders running and it barely had enough power to do the speed limit.

The CEL flashes when the car is first started and the engine is cold, but once it warms up the CEL becomes solid and stays lit.

Things I have done trying to solve the problem:

I switched cylinder 1 and 4 coils, cleared the codes, and started the engine again. Eventually the same codes came back on. To me this rules out the coil, but I might change them all just to be safe. At least one of them has been changed before as it does not have numbers written on the top like the other 3 do. I pulled all the spark plugs and they all look rather similar. Light brown color on all of them. They are Autolite plugs (im not a fan) and will be changing those too, but I don't believe they are the problem.

The previous owner took it to a mechanic and he said it was carbon buildup on the valves. I haven't looked into this much yet but I do know that carbon buildup is a common problem on cars with direct injection, but I am unsure if that could cause this misfire. I will look more into that and how hard it is to clean them. I don't want to pull the whole head off if I don't have to.

Looking at Ross-Tech Wiki, it could be a lot of things causing this but I was hoping someone would have some input.

Thanks for your help!

Sorry, I wrote that from my desktop and I have to use my crappy old laptop for the VCDS.

Autoscan with car off. Plugs and coils are currently removed from motor.

Don't know what Jack recommends, most people use walnut shell blaster for doing valves, in many cases head stays on, about the only way I know to do it, but i don't own one of the problematic GDI motors.

I would do this right out of the gate, as sounds like it needs to be done, then go from there. You might get in and find the rumor was false, is so good.

I have buddies with mini coopers, they do it routinely, about every 20,000 miles.

Compression check compare across entire engine bank?

Check grounds and wire harness to coil packs.

Swap or change spark plugs as part of isolation strategy

Report............?

Do cylinder leakdown test and compare cold engine/warm engine, also if leakage is high you must find where is leaking. I had same symptoms and issue, cold engine with misfires, warm engine with no misfires. Warm cylinder was leaking about 20 %, and cold was leaking about 60%. Exhaust valve on 3. cylinder was worn. This is just example.

Okay, I have switched the spark plug location to rule out both the spark plugs and the ignition coils.

Compression test looked good. It was preformed on a slightly warm engine.

Cylinder 1: 180 PSI
Cylinder 2: 175 PSI
Cylinder 3: 185 PSI
Cylinder 4: 190 PSI

They look pretty good to me but I will check again when the engine is completely cold to see if it makes a difference.

I still need to look into the coil wiring and ground. I will have to do some research to figure out how to check that. That will be my next step.

I also was running the advanced measuring value mode on VCDS and noticed that the engine consistently misfired when cold and at idle. It still misfired at idle when it was warm but not as often. It would also misfire at higher RPM here and there but it was sporadic. This was all done in Park so there was no load on the engine. But it was always and only Cylinder 1 with the misfire.

As of now I will look into the coil wiring, then do a cold compression test, and then maybe pull the intake manifold to check out the injectors and carbon buildup on valves.

Thanks for your help

It's better to do leakdown test with cold engine. With compression test on warm engine you don't know where it's leaking. And try to do compression test when engine is cold (after 10 hours).
Also check power and ground of ECU and all sensors.
Have you checked injectors? Maybe there is some issue.

Also try to measure vacuum of engine before taking engine head off. Neddle of vacuum gauge should be stabile if valves are good, if not neddle twitches.
You have to consider that valve lifters can cause this if they don't work in good order.
