Hi,

I'd like to make the Stop/Start system less sensitive on my Skoda Superb MK3 (TDI 4x4 DSG6).
Currently, the Start/stop start limit voltage is set to 7,6V. I know that setting it to 12V would completely disable the system. But... This is not what I want.
I had in mind to set it to a value like 9 or 10V.
Any opinion on the efficiency of this setting please? If someone has done it, I'd be happy to read his/her feedback.
Thank you for your help!

Note : Please, comment like "Disable your S&S completely" is not my question. Thanks... ;)

EDIT : Hmmm... My VCDS is an official version. I didn't notice this thread is in a "piracy section". Could a moderator move my post to the suitable section? Thanks for your help.

hmm..... while you are posting-up your auto-scan - some additional other data to further add context to your question - please. When you say that you want SS to be less sensitive - what precisely do you mean?

As you have correctly identified, the "Voltage method" (some cars use the "Temperature method") has a binary result in that it totally disables SS. Both of these methods trick the SS system into believing that it's imprudent to switch-off the engine: in the case of the voltage method, the act of setting the adaptation channel to 12V (you can go as high as 12.1V) tricks the SS system into believing that there is insufficient battery capacity to crank and re-start the engine, once it's switched off.

So - the Voltage method is an extremely myopic decider in that it uses nothing more than a view about battery re-start capacity. And of course there are many more aspects of a fully functioning SS system that are involved in the decision to switch-off the engine (like seatbelt, engine temperature, Air-con compressor status, steering wheel angle etc).

Which is a neat segway back into my confusion about what is meant "less sensitive"? No offense intended, but just using a different reference point for the "Voltage method" doesn't appear to relate to every day driving conditions. So it's unlikely to result in a predictable, less-sensitive operation of the SS system (IMO, of course).

But I'm guessing (my apology) until the matter is clarified.

Don

By "less sensitive" do you mean not stopping the engine until the car has fully come to a halt?

I ask because many Octavia DSG owners complain that the SS stops the engine while the car is still moving which obviously disables the steering power assistance.

I did not change anything to the current setting of the S&S system yet. It's still at 7,6V.

@ DV52 : By "too sensitive", I effectively mean, that it triggers quite too often to my needs and my "taste". I'd like to preserve the life time of some components such as battery and starter. I'd rather the S&S triggers later, when the engine is warm enough and the battery correctly charged.
The S&S start limit voltage, is the only one parameter, whom I can have access to tune it.
I don't know if changing its value to 9,5 or 10V would comply to my goal, but this is why I ask if it's worth a try.

@ PertolDave : This is another point I'd would like to get rid of too... Foot on brake pedal, the S&S effectively shuts the engine down below 5 km/h. Very nerving, when you only want to decelerate, while approaching a "give way" road sign, or in traffic jam...
If someone knows how to change the speed threshold from 5 to 0 km/h, I'd be glad to get the trick! ;)
But this not the most prejudictable to me at this time...

Thanks for your advices and opinions.

Thank you UWE for creating a new thread in the right section.
Well, it really should be in Tweaks, but you won't be able to post there until you Get Verified. Please do so. It appears you are in category 2) of that post.

Well, my status has been verified:thumbs:. Thus, if someone can give his opinion on this S&S start voltage limit... I'd be very interested. :D

All I can suggest is that you look at the SS discussions on the Octavia & Superb forums of www.briskoda.net where this issue has been discussed often - no change to the "sensitivity" has been found but a method of preventing SS kicking in before coming to a halt has been suggested by careful use of the brake pedal.

It seems VAG have designed SS this way to meet their emissions and economy figures, and nobody has found anything better than the voltage limit tweak other than completely disabling the battery management system.

The good Burghers in Germany that designed SS have already accommodated your wants. Here's a list of preconditions that must occur for the SS system to switch-off the engine (from SSP #426)

Conditions for engine stop
The vehicle is stationary (speed = 0km/h).
The engine speed is below 1200rpm.
The coolant temperature is between 25°C and 100°C.
The brake vacuum is more than 550mbar.
The energy required to restart the engine that was calculated before “engine off” can be supplied
by the battery (starting voltage prediction).
The battery temperature is greater or equal to -1°C and less than 55°C.
The air-conditioning requirement of the occupants is not too high.
The difference between target and actual vent temperature is below 8°C.
The diesel particulate filter is not in regeneration mode (diesel engines only).

So - by design, there are already a number of hurdles to jump for SS to switch-off the engine.

The S&S start limit voltage, is the only one parameter, whom I can have access to tune it.
I don't know if changing its value to 9,5 or 10V would comply to my goal, but this is why I ask if it's worth a try.

By all means - try it!! But, I'm not sure how controllable (read, predictable) the result will be - so I suspect that the go/no-go decision with a "half-pregnant" threshold voltage will be somewhat hit-and-miss IMO. But I'm more than happy to be proven wrong- please post up your observations if you proceed.

Don't get me wrong, I hate SS with a vengeance - without wanting to appear overly dramatic, I think that it's perhaps the most dangerous facility in the vehicle. So my motivation to disable SS was not to save on wear-and-tear. I don't believe that the added demands from SS are an issue on these vehicles because there don't appear to be numerous stories of systemic failures of SS related equipment on this and on other feedback forums -plus the literature from VAG expounds on the gear that has been beefed-up in SS equipped vehicles. Which of course doesn't mean that failures on SS equipment won't occur occasionally.

The coolant temperature is between 25°C and 100°C.
A coolant temperature of 25 Celsius is still a cold engine though, I would have thought a coolant temperature of say 75 Celsius would have been a better measure of a warm engine?

Or even better an oil temperature of say 60 Celsius or greater?

^^^ hmm...... thanks Dave - I agree.

However, whilst I'm certainly very uncomfortable being an apologist any part of the SS design - it's still about room temperature and given that these engines do heat-up fairly quickly, I suspect that SS decisions don't remain at the bottom end of the coolant temperature scale for any appreciable time. Plus, I suspect that the need to pass emission standards probably had a role in deciding the lower temperature threshold - perhaps

In any event, my advice is for OP to join the growing throng of those that delete SS in its entirety- life's much simpler and safer if SS is gone!!

Hi,
Thank you all for this additional answers.
Sorry Don, but this not how the S&S is designed, at least on my Superb Mk3. The S&S actually shuts the engine off as soon as I press the brake pedal AND the speed is below 5 km/h (assuming other conditions are fullfilled). As PetroDave mentioned, this is really an issue for many users. You need to be very smooth or feather the gas pedal, but this is not enough to fool the S&S and get the expected behavior... :(
If I try and notice significant improvement, I'll tell you! ;) May be worth a try...

^^^bap33: hmm....... OK - my bad (I guess).

I was just quoting the SSP information plus my own experience with MQB platform vehicles that I have driven (mainly Golf mk7s and Audi A3 8V). In these cars, SS engages to switch-off the engine once the car has stopped completely.

Some drivers have learned what I call the "SS shoe shuffle" - which is to find the brake pedal "sweet-spot" whereby the foot pressure applied is sufficient to hold the car but is not too-much to engage SS. It isn't difficult to learn the procedure - but why bother when it's much easier to just delete SS entirely IMO.

@ DV52 : Sorry the "Num Lock" key of my keyboard was not locked. S&S shuts the engine off below 5 km/h. It's almost the same on my wife's Audi Q3.
I'd rather it only triggers when vehicle is completely stopped to avoid engine shut off when you only want to slow down when arriving at a roundabout and you want to let the car "slide" to quickly insert in a "Mouse hole" in the traffic.
Otherwise, it can grant you "brown trousers moments"... When S&S make you think you've stalled and your car is stuck in the middle of the rouandabout with car flow is rushing on your side...

Hi,

I still didn't modify the start limit voltage on my S&S.
However, I've read on an Audi Forum, that one could modify the activation logic of the S&S (on Audi A6 C6 at least) :
- Default mode is S&S OFF upon ignition; or
- Default mode is S&S as selected (ON or OFF) at engine shut down.

I'd be glad, if the first option could be activated.

The coding seems to be:
09-Central Elect. > Security Access – 16 : 20113 or 31347 Adaptation 10
Select channel 34 - Modify initial value (should be 28)
- Remove 4 = S&S systematically OFF at each engine start (this setting is the contrary of standard spec)
- Add 32 = S&S status (ON or OFF) before engine shut down will be saved and maintained at next engine start.
- Add 64 = The led on S&S knob is inverted (i.e. : light off if S&S is ON / light on, if S&S is OFF).

I had a look in the Superb MK3 menus with my VCDS, but I didn't find anything similar.
Does anyone know if this is feasible?

The A6 C6 is a completely different platform to the Superb, and the Superb doesn't have the ability to remember the SS state with coding changes - only by adding additional hardware such as https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Star...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

do yourself a favor and install the module that PetrolDave has suggested. I did. after that I forgot my car had the hatred S&S system.

Here are some news. I haven't bought the module yet. However, I've tuned a bit this start limit voltage on my S&S.
10V is already too high. It almost doesn't trigger the S&S anymore.
I've changed down to 9V, but it is still quite high. The S&S triggers rarely.
My latest setting is 8.5V... Test pending. ;)
