Hello

This is all on my 2004 mk4 R32

I'm fairly new to VCDS/Hex-V2 so I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong here. I have used VCDS a few times and didn't have any problems over the last few weekends but today, I attempted to use it with the intent to bleed my ABS pump but keep getting KLine Init Failed with a "No Response From Controller" error no matter what controller I try to access. When I run an auto scan, it doesn't communicate with any controllers. The results screen only displays the controllers it attempted to reach and the amount of time it took to run the scan, VBat voltage etc. and nothing else.

I have tried quite a few different things to get it to work but my result is the same every time. So far I have tested voltage at the OBDII port between pin 4 and 7. Initial testing gave me a voltage reading of 12.6, I then tried it with a 1k Ohm resistor in parallel with my probes and got a voltage reading of 8.9 VDC or so. I don't know what the 8.9 VDC reading means given this isn't one of the listed results from the Aftermarket Radio Problem page of the FAQ. Oh, I initially had an aftermarket radio installed but after running this test, I decided to reinstall the OEM radio just to eliminate that possibility.

The last controller I successfully accessed (last weekend) was the ABS Pump. I was going to bleed it at that time but didn't have enough fluid to complete the task so I shut everything down and left it for the week. Given I last accessed the ABS Pump I thought I might of some how messed that up so I disconnected it and reattempted to run auto scan, with the same result as before.

I have tried a few other things such as disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, power cycling the computer, adjusting my power plan as per the FAQ, updating to the latest firmware, changing USB ports, etc, etc... all with the same result.

Here is a copy of my last SUCCESSFUL auto scan (from last weekend when everything was working):

And here is a screen cap of the Test popup (looks normal to me):

LED Behavior:
Plugged into laptop but not into car: on blue for about a second and then off for about 1/2 a second
Plugged into car, ignition on, plugged into computer: on green for about a second and then off for about 1/2 a second
While attempting to access controllers/run a scan: solid green
At one point, I plugged the Hex-v2 into the port with ignition already on and got an alternating red/green LED with a momentary beep coming from the dongle.

If any other information is needed, please let me know.

Thanks for the help,
Andy

Hi Andy,

Although the Port test appears to be normal to me as well, the momentary beep might have been a shorted K-line. I see 2 issues that may explain the lack of communication with the car.

1) The Haldex (Address 22-AWD) was offline in the good scan. That's a Powertrain module so it could take down the 01-Engine, 03-ABS, etc. I would unplug the Haldex and see if the communication is restored.
2) The Central Control Module for Central Convenience (J393) voltage code combined with 01336 - Company Data Bus for Comfort System - No Communications - Intermittent may be a sign that the comfort bus has a problem. I wouldn't get excited about that until you see if unplugging 22 improves the situation.

I do not think the K-Line goes to the radio harness anymore in 2004.

Ok, I got under the car and disconnected the Haldex module. While I was there I noticed the ground strap going from the body to the Haldex was corroded all the way through and broken. Also, the pins of the connector were very corroded. After it was disconnected, I was able to get the Hex-V2 to communicate and was able to bleed my ABS pump. Going to repair the ground strap and clean the connectors for the Haldex module and reconnect it, hopefully this will fix the issue.

Thanks for the help!
