Hi All
Does anyone know or had dealings with replacing normal rear light clusters for the new LED units.
I have a couple of new sets of LED clusters and I have a 2014 Yeti, the lights are a direct replacement and connecting plugs are the same.
The usual problems occur with bulb failure warnings even though everything works great.
I am not too sure resistors are the way to go as Yetis have 2 x 21w standard tail bulbs in each side and ohms law works it out that I will need a 36w 4ohm load resistor which are available in 50w units to make up the missing current draw as the LEDS for back driving lights only draw 400ma which is 6w.
I am told its possible to code the new LED clusters with VCDS but I guess this will be in the dreaded byte 18 and to be honest I am very apprehensive to play around with byte 18 in case I end up with a mess I cannot get out of or worse damage my BCM.
if anyone knows how this can be done I would be very grateful for a few pointers or maybe it would be better to get them coded by the stealer.

Regards
Charly

Hi Charly,

Please post the Auto-Scan. That will show us if nasty Byte 18 has the real value shown -or- if they masked with a pair of 00s. The scan will also include the brand and software level of the BCM in the event that coding modifications are relevant like the Mk6 Golf.

Hi Dana
Thanks for the quick reply the scan is below its an old scan but nothing has changed since I took it except a media interface so the info should be here or I can take a fresh one if needed.

Hi Uwe

To be honest I knew it was Zero Zero as when I was looking at the different options the VCDS software it warned me in RED not to mess with it which is why I have left it alone.
Does this mean we cannot code the Rear LED lights or is there anyway to find the correct coding or is it only doable with dealers software.
I really do not understand why VAG have done this and only this area maybe you throw some light on it for me.

I'm far from an expert with this Byte 18 nonsense. My understanding: The fact that the existing value is masked does not prevent other values from being tried, it just means we don't know what value to restore if other values that you try don't work out.

Now as to what values you may want to try in this particular car: I will defer to others.

You need to backup the existing light config before changing byte 18 which is not something VCDS can do.

Where are you in the UK? I might be able to help if you're close enough having done something similar to my PQ35 based Octavia.

If you can, it's also worth trying to find an autoscan of a Yeti with factory LED lights to see if byte 18 is still 00.

I already performed this retrofit with direct editing of the BCMs light config (which is masked behind thr 0x00 in Byte 18).

So if you are near Germany this would take us roughly 10 minutes. You might however find an experienced VCP user to help you.

As for Byte 18 changing it to anything different than 0x00 will mean you can not go back. You must then find either the correct value or the original one. Since there are 255 possibilities that is way to go. For increased fun, I've read stories where people where able to even brick the BCM using the bruteforce method. :/

I agree with both of those replies. VCDS can't read or change the EEPROM and that's where you will find the original configuration so it can be backed up.

We may be able to do that one day but it isn't going to happen anytime real soon with VCDS. If that function is implemented we need to make sure it won't brick modules (which can happen with normal coding at times).

Hi
Thanks for all the input to the problem everyone, I now realize there are 3 ways to go which are

Number 1, risk bricking the BCM and play with byte 18,

Number 2, go from where I live in UK to Germany which is tooo far.

Number 3, final option is to use load/ballast resistors which is easier than what I originally thought as it turns out the 2 tail light bulbs are 5w wedge type bulbs and not 21w bulbs so the load would only have to total 10w and not 42w per cluster.

I have already tried number 3 with 25w 25ohm ballast for the tail light which work 100% but the brake lights both flash 5 times rapid every time the lights are turned on and then work normally.
I have used 50w 8ohm for a 21w load on the brake lights and it seems after a bit of research this flashing is due to cold start diagnostics from the BCM to test the load and make sure bulbs are correctly working.
I am not sure how to stop this happening with ballast resistors or capacitors fitted or even if its possible to stop this cold start check, but there is a warning elsewhere that this can cause premature wear on the LEDs causing shorter life, I fail to see how this can happen if its just a 12v feed that the BCM is sending to the brakelights to test unless it is ramping up the volts somehow.
My only other option is to try to find someone in the UK who can code these properly like TBAx in Germany can do, I am not worried to change byte 18 as long as I know its not going to cost a new BCM or end up not being able to return to a working correct hex value for the car.

Don't mess with byte 18 without a backup!

I'm in the UK with the right kit to backup and edit the light config - it just depends where you are. Even if you're not close I might be able to suggest some that is.

As I said in post #7, where in the UK are you :)

Looks like im going to have to invest in VCP as it seems it can get into all the cracks that VCDS cannot.

I will private message you Langers2k now

Sorry I didnt answer anyone earlier but I only just noticed page 2 lol
