The eBahn Bentley lists a procedure for testing the Heated Oxygen Sensor using a 'generic scan tool' as follows:

"Function test
Connect the scan tool.
Start engine and let it run at idle.
Select "Diagnostic mode 6: Check test results of components that are not continuously monitored" .
Select "Test-ID 01: Heated Oxygen Sensor" .
Select "Test-ID 131: Dynamic test" and check whether specified values are obtained.
Test-ID (TID) 131 (Hex-ID) ($83),
Component or System, Response Check. Reduced threshold upon suspicion of malfunction in catalytic converter
Min. Max.
3.500 ----
End diagnosis and switch ignition off"

Is the VCDS value at 074-3 this measured value? If not, is there some way to relate VCDS measured parameter numbers to whatever VW is referring to as a generic scan tool?

If you really want to follwo that procedure, you could try generic OBD-II mode in VCDS. ;)

VCDS reports that OBD-II mode is not available (MicroCAN & latest version VCDS)

Group 031 is labeled as providing "Lambda Sensor Air Values II", with 4 parameters, (no units), Duty Cycle, Voltage, Voltage. IT provides data that is clearly dynamically related to engine operation conditions, I think with the (no units) parameter probably being Lambda.

There is so much information available with this tool, it is most unfortunate that VW chooses to keep so much of the logic hidden and proprietary.

Hmm. I suppose it's possible the BRM engine still did generic OBD-II via K-Line rather than CAN.
