Hmm, 01-Engine thinks 16-Steering Wheel has a fault, but 16-Steering Wheel doesn't?

Any history here? All parts original/stock?

No history. All parts original. Wondering, if the steering wheel control module was fried, would there be a fault code store at address 01 Engine? I might have an electrical problem, because there are the other 4 faults but no codes. And they are electrical. What is the "control circuit for signal horn? I knew about the parking light and did check Terminal 30. Cleaned terminal 30. Hardly anything on it and it was tight.

Probably has no significance, but why is the date of the Engine Freeze Frame 2040.14.16 which makes no sense?

Does that car know the date? In stark contrast to the Audis, most VWs did not, and even after they did, it seems some control modules didn't get the memo.

We know there's some weird stuff going on with Freezeframe dates in some of these cars. The data we get there is clearly intended to be represented as a date, but it sometimes doesn't make sense, particularly on cars that don't know the date. In some cases there's supposedly a way to calculate a more plausible date based on some data from the instrument cluster but we haven't really pursued this because it would involve extra drilling in the instrument cluster, preferably before the Auto-Scan commences for real, and that would generally slow things down. One of the reasons that the dealers' tools are so darn slow is that they spend a lot of time rooting around in places where they have no obvious business, and they often do this multiple times in a single scan.

Ross-Tech manual talks about this date issue. Any more help available?

The fact that the dates in the Freeze-Frame data are whacked isn't going to fix the problem at hand here.
If this car were mine, what I would do:
* Clear fault codes in 01-Engine
* Clear fault codes in 09-Cent. Elect.
* Clear fault codes in 16-Steering wheel (even through there aren't any).
Then test drive to see if the cruise control works. If it does, then carry on until it doesn't and re-scan to see if there are any new fault codes.

Honestly, my money is on some gunk or dirt in the control switches for the cruise.

Thanks. I was thinking of doing just that. I did check the battery as per Bentley Manual. It's fine. Open circuit test 12.9 volts. I also have taken apart the cruise control switch and cleaned the contacts. It was not very dirty at all. Slowly getting everything checked. It has been cold here, but is now warming up. It will be above 0 C all next week, so I will be more able to work on it. Will keep you posted. Seems there are quite a few with this problem on TDIclub.com but hasn't been much help coming from there.

Take a look at the Measuring Value Block(MVB) Group [004] in the [16-Steering wheel]-J527, here you will see the status of the Cruise Control System(CCS) switches.

If it is not displaying any change when the switches are operated you have:
- Faulty CCS switches
- Wiring/connections concerns
- Faulty J527 controller

- If the MVB fields are changing as expected, have a look at the [01-Engine] Controller-J623 MVB Group [006]
Group [006], field 4 will display the CCS switches status in binary (0=off, 1=on) -(Mouse over the field for a 'popup' balloon that details this info)

- If the information there does not change, it is possible the J527 is not broadcasting the CCS information on the CAN-Bus(failed J527)

- It is unlikely, yet possible there could be a concern with the J623
You could try to disconnect the battery for 15 minutes, then reconnect the battery (Key is off!)
Then in [01-Engine], use the [Coding-II] code of [16167] to deactivate the CCS, cycle the key off (wait 30 seconds) and back on, then use the code [11463] to activate the CCS and road test.
The above maybe a long shot, however it does not hurt to try.

I did what you suggested. In 16 Steering wheel -J527 the actuation of switches showed. On/off- no change. Accel.showed a change. Decel showed a change. In 01 Engine it looked like this.
xxxxxxxx? = stuck on
xxxxxxx?x = pressed off
xxxxxx?xx = decelerate (-)
xxxxx?xxx = accelerate (+)
xxxx?xxxx = resume (reset)
?xxxxxxxx = Stuck on (hardware) Then I did what you suggested in last paragraph. Road tested. Still not working.

I also cleaned off 5 grounds in the engine compartment including battery terminals. Not very dirty. Very slight corrosion. We don't use much salt here.

If the On position wasn't showing a change in 16-Steering Wheel the stalk/switch may be faulty.

I searched for images of 1K0 953 549 CD and happened to find a VW Vortex post from Mr. Timewise (VCDS customer and 2010 Jetta owner). Rather than steal his photo links I'll just post the link to that thread:

http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4808328

The Stalk connects to the 16 controller when it is seated and fully connected but I highly doubt the module itself is faulty. Since the CCS signal goes from the stalk -to- the 16 controller before it broadcasts on the PT network (for the 01-Engine to use) I would start there.

Thanks. I will start there. Would like to see wiring diagram for the switch stalk. I have read that the yellow wire often breaks. I will look at this tomorrow and will post results.

Can't seem to find anything wrong, so I erased all codes. Will drive for a while and rescan.

Could the reason why no fault codes are listed in address 16 be that the CCS switch (on/off) is on, (as in "stuck on"), and the two micro switches are shown to work. The software does not recognize the "stuck on" condition as being a fault. Some people leave it on. I am leaning towards the switch being the problem. Also I read another thread on another forum that the persons car had exactly the same diagnostic. He replaced the CC switch and that solved the problem. They have the switches in stock here for $102. I'm tempted to try it. What do you think?

- I have certainly had to replace many failed Cruise Control Switches before. If the dealer has them in stock, that does say something too.
- If the switch positions do not change in the MVBs, then replacing the Switches maybe a good choice at this point.

Problem solved. It was the CCS switch. White wire had no continuity. Other four wires tested OK. To replace that wire would not be real easy, so bought a new switch. Even so, I save about $250.00 or so. Road tested all good. Thanks for the help!

It just did! It would have cost me $176.00 to get it analysed and $297.00 to have the dealer change it. The part cost $118.00.
