Woman granted clemency by Obama gets sent back to prison

    By Joshua Rhett Miller
    June 12, 2017 | 9:42am

A Texas grandmother who was granted clemency from a life sentence by President Barack Obama was ordered back to federal prison last week — after wasting her second chance with an arrest for theft, prosecutors said.

Carol Denise Richardson, 49, was ordered to return to federal prison for 14 months during a hearing on Thursday, after prosecutors said she repeatedly violated the conditions of her supervised release — including an arrest for stealing laundry detergent, which she planned to sell to buy drugs, the Houston Chronicle reports.

“This defendant was literally given a second chance to become a productive member of society and has wasted it,” Assistant US Attorney Ted Imperato said in a statement. “She has clearly shown a willful disregard for the law and must face the consequences for her crimes and actions.”

Richardson — who was convicted in June 2006 of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of crack cocaine and two counts of possession with intent to distribute – was sentenced to life in prison. She was released on July 28, 2016, as one of a total of 1,715 inmates, mostly those with nonviolent drug convictions, who were granted clemency by Obama during his two terms in the White House, according to the Chronicle.

Richardson had been ordered to remain under supervision for 10 years, but was arrested for theft in Pasadena on April 13. She didn’t report the arrest and also didn’t tell authorities she was fired from a job or had changed her address — all violations of the terms of her release, Imperato told Judge Keith P. Ellison.

Ellison, meanwhile, said he was disappointed that Richardson blew her chance at freedom. He also sentenced her to five years of supervised release in addition to her time in federal prison.

Richardson cried throughout Thursday’s hearing, according to attorney Mark Anthony Diaz, who was assigned to her case. He said the theft involved $60 worth of stolen laundry detergent she planned to sell to buy drugs.

Richardson’s addiction to crack cocaine led her back to prison, according to Diaz, who asked the judge to provide her mandatory drug rehabilitation. Ellison said the Bureau of Prisons does not provide such treatment to someone given a life sentence, but said he would make rehabilitation part of her post-release plan.

Amy Povah, founder of CAN-DO, a nonprofit group that seeks clemency for nonviolent drug offenders, told the Washington Post that Richardson’s case was “extremely rare,” adding that she knew of only one other person who had been returned to prison after being granted clemency by Obama.

“We are very concerned to hear that Carol Richardson has been sent back to prison for various probation violations that appear to stem from her drug addiction that has gone untreated,” a statement from the group read. “The system has failed Carol, yet again. It will be easy for some to point a finger at Carol and justify their support of harsh mandatory sentences as a necessity to keep people locked up, when we feel Carol’s current situation is proof that we desperately need to overhaul our current drug policy that treats addiction as a criminal issue, rather than a medical issue.”

Anything known about the nut-job yet?
The engineering problems are likely insurmountable. It would be like proposing to land a rocket booster section on a barge floating in the middle of the ocean.

Gunman in GOP baseball practice shooting has died, says President Trump

    https://www.aol.com/article/news/201...rump/22206550/

President Trump delivered remarks from the White House after a shooting left five wounded in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning -- announcing the suspected gunman has died.
"A gunman opened fire on members of Congress and their staffs as they were practicing for tomorrow's annual charity baseball game," Trump said in his remarks. "Authorities are continuing to investigate the crime and the assailant has now died from his injuries."

Officials identified the suspect in the shooting at a congressional baseball practice that left five wounded, including Republican Rep. Steve Scalise, as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois.
A quick search of Hodgkinson's Facebook page reveals he appears to be an avid Bernie Sanders fan, with multiple images of and articles about the U.S. senator and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate displayed throughout his Facebook profile.
Sen. Sanders released a condemning statement on the shooting on Wednesday, saying he is "sickened by this despicable act."

"Trump is a Traitor," Hodgkinson wrote as a caption with an article shared on March 22. "Trump Has Destroyed Our Democracy. It's Time to Destroy Trump & Co."
The last Facebook post Hodgkinson shared that is visible to the public was a petition calling for an end to the NEXUS Pipeline.
I don't want a president who won't even keep his money in American banks," Hodgkinson wrote in a August 2012 letter to the editor. "I don't want a president who will lower taxes on the rich and raise them on the other 99 percent."
According to his Facebook page, the suspect graduated from Southwestern Illinois College in 1971, listing he studied flight training and aviation technology. Hodgkinson is also the former owner of JTH Inspections, a company listed on Yelp as specializing in home inspections.
"James was thorough and professional," a Yelp review of Hodgkinson read. His Facebook lists that he left his position with JTH Inspections in December 2016.

Some in GOP say threats of violence against them ignored

    By JULIE BYKOWICZ

WASHINGTON (AP) — Whatever the motive of the shooter at a congressional baseball practice, some Republicans say that in the era of President Donald Trump, they’re being threatened like never before.

They point to a virulent backlash against Trump that they say has gone beyond the bounds of moderate political dissent and — subtly or not — advocates violence.

“I’ve been saying, ‘What is it going to take for this to get some visibility,’” said Charlie Kirk, a young conservative activist. “And now here we are.”

During a news conference at the shooting scene Wednesday, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, declined to comment about whether America’s political climate could be a factor. But he said, “There’s too much, I believe, raw discourse that’s pulling people apart.”

The gunman, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, opened fire Wednesday on Republican lawmakers and associates practicing baseball in a Virginia suburb outside Washington. A top House Republican, Steve Scalise of Louisiana, was critically wounded, as were several other people. Trump said the gunman had been killed.

Police haven’t stated a motive. But Hodgkinson’s strong anti-Republican stances and background as a former volunteer on Bernie Sanders campaign only added to suggestions that the shooting was politically motivated.

Such an assessment could be premature. Some initially attributed the 2011 shooting of Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords to intense partisanship, though that did not appear to be what motivated the gunman.

But prominent Republicans, including Trump’s children, have long been unsettled by the rage against the president. Daughter and White House adviser Ivanka Trump said in a recent television interview that she did not expect the “viciousness” and “ferocity” of her father’s critics.

Donald Trump Jr. is among those arguing that “liberal hate speech” leads to violence. He tweeted support for a comment by conservative political consultant Harlan Hill: “Events like today are EXACTLY why we took issue with NY elites glorifying the assassination of our President.”

He was referring to a New York City production of “Julius Caesar” that portrays the assassinated title character looking like Trump in a business suit. That came on the heels of comedian Kathy Griffin posing with a bloodied rendering of Trump’s head.

In both cases, there were consequences: lost sponsorships for the theatrical production and CNN dropping Griffin as host of its New Year’s Eve special, despite her apology.

Kirk has been chronicling threats that get little attention outside conservative media.

John Griffin, a media arts and animation professor at the Art Institute of Washington, for example, commented on Facebook about the Republican health care plan, saying: “They should be lined up and shot. That’s not hyperbole; blood is on their hands.”

When Kirk tweeted about the professor’s threat, the University of Georgia chapter of the Young Democratic Socialists, a student group at the Athens campus, wrote, “This is absolutely outrageous! House Republicans should NOT be shot! They should be guillotined.”

Griffin later apologized on Facebook for using “inappropriate” language, but said it spoke to “the fear so many feel right now in this country.” Neither he nor the student group immediately responded to a request for comment Wednesday.

Democrats, in turn, point to Trump’s rough language — he has urged on fights at his rallies — as justification for their own. And on Wednesday, House Democratic leader James Clyburn of South Carolina said plenty of Democrats have experienced the level of hatred as Republicans.

“I’m not a Republican. And I’ve had all kinds of threats against me and my family,” he said. “It’s got nothing to do with partisan politics.”

Ben Shapiro, a conservative writer and radio show host, says the violent rhetoric from all viewpoints contributes to “worse politics in general.” But he warns it is a mistake to say that atmospherics causes any one act of violence.

“Yes, that sort of rage culture is destroying the country,” he said. What happened at the ballfield is “a symptom, but it’s not the chief symptom.”

This year, lawmakers, particularly Republicans, have experienced rowdy, overflowing town halls that they say border on dangerous.

Rep. Dave Brat, a Virginia Republican, said he has been concerned that security for members is “nothing near what it needs to be.” He said town halls now often include “a thousand people screaming, and it only takes one person off the reservation” to cause a problem.

    Just leaving this here:

    ... and then later:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/08/u...ript.html?_r=0

BURR: And the FBI, in this case, unlike other cases that you might investigate — did you ever have access to the actual hardware that was hacked? Or did you have to rely on a third party to provide you the data that they had collected?

COMEY: In the case of the DNC, and, I believe, the DCCC, but I’m sure the DNC, we did not have access to the devices themselves. We got relevant forensic information from a private party, a high-class entity, that had done the work. But we didn’t get direct access.

    BURR: But no content?

    COMEY: Correct.

BURR: Isn’t content an important part of the forensics from a counterintelligence standpoint?

COMEY: It is, although what was briefed to me by my folks — the people who were my folks at the time is that they had gotten the information from the private party that they needed to understand the intrusion by the spring of 2016.
Let's say your house gets broken into you call the cops to report the burglary. You tell them they can't search the house but here's a report done by a private eye, a real "high-class entity". The cops proceed to publish that report and launch an investigation without ever looking in the house. Does that seem plausible to anyone?

The only place where "high-class" should be used as a descriptor is by prostitutes charging more than $200/hour. Then again, this whole thing is coming from politicians, who are screwing us for more than that already.

Refresh my memory about an October statement about a whole cache of previously-unseen emails from Hillary Clinton being discovered on a computer seized from the Weiner/Abedin household (a suspiciously-short time period earlier) while investigating Weiner's weiner photos? Did they send that out to a private forensics lab as well? How did the private company send their initial findings all the way to the top of the food chain before they completed their work? Were they tasked with finding Hillary's email...without a warrant? If not, could they even reveal their findings to the FBI as it is inadmissible? Something doesn't smell right here.....
