I've had my VCDS HEX-CAN-USB cable for a while but after installing VCDS 17.1 on my WIn 7 laptop this morning and scanning my A8, I experienced two separate licencing issues which I'd never seen before.

1) I Autoscanned my D3 A8 and it halted when reading ECU 4F with a window labelled "VCDS Interface check" with the message "Failure to communicate [-2], Please use [Options]>[Test] for further details".

: I OK'd the window, went to Options / Test and it gave me my normal Windows showing all was well. "Port status OK ... Version 1.96 ... K1 OK K2 OK CAN OK"

: Went back to Autoscan again and it worked OK! Then did some other ECU logging to diagnose my door fault problem with no further problems.

2) After closing VCDS I realised I wanted to look at the Gateway List for which I used the Autoscan menu. This failed to run and showed me a message "Sorry! This function requires a liecenced interface".

: Once again went to Port test; all was well exactly as before. Also went to look at licence info - this was OK too - "Valid/activated"

: Went back to AUtoscan menu and I believe Gateway List now worked [may have done a autoscan successfully instead].

I've got logs and screen prints for this but not sure how I can easily incorporate screen print jpgs into this thread. Could always email to support ...

Regards - Julian

PS 17.1 was installed 'over the top' of my existing 16.8 version.

I got this message time by time with previous versions, too. I think, this is because of my old, slow and overloaded laptop running Win XP. On my second laptop (more resources, almost fresh Win 7) I have never seen this message. So I don't stress for it :)

I heard similar results today with 17.1 and legitimate cable.
I myself haven't had this issue yet.

This happened this morning on my Micro CAN cable, never seen this issue before. I just closed down the software and started again with no issues.

Experienced this bug before (on 16.8.3 and so on) with the HEX+CAN-USB cable, but never experienced it with the HEX-NET - all referencing the DRV (German) version. I don't think it's a performance a computer performance issue...

Certainly Uwe;

Lenovo T60 Laptop
Intel Core Duo T2400 @ 1.83GHz
2.00GB RAM
32bit Win 7 Home SP1
64GB SSD disk

Always runs on battery when I'm running VCDS; no other software used other that Avast ANtiVirus. Never seen a licence issue before in about 15months ...

I also have Avast AV running too but have not seen this issue until this version. Maybe a common thread?

Nope, Norton Security here; disabling it completely did not prevent this issue.

I had this twice today also.
Once on a Mk6 Golf and then on my Passat.
In both cases just closed and reopened VCDS but there does seem to be a new issue.

Have never seen an issue in any previous versions.

PC is running Win7 Enterprise 64bit with 8GB RAM and a Core i7-2640M.

Happy to provide any additional information that may assist.
AV is McAfee Enterprise 8.8

@TBAx, you've installed VCDS to C:\Program Files (x86)\VCDS-DRV which is not a suitable location. Please uninstall the software and re-install it to the default location (C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS-DRV), then check again and see if that makes a difference.

The default location on my old Vista 32bit,Windows 7 32bit and Windows 10 when I tried it out, has always been C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS. I don't know where you get C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS-DRV as the default location Sebastian. The Beta versions go in C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS-Beta.

I installed the new 17.1 a couple of days ago and I tried it yesterday and it works ok. I have Avast Pro running all the time and that doesn't cause any problems when installing.

It does appear to be random/intermittent.

C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS is the default location for English but Sebastian was replying to a customer using a DRV Release (German VCDS) which uses the C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS-DRV location.

Dear Sebastian, as already posted in the german VCDS forum, changing the directory (via uninstall + reinstall) does not fix the problem. However there are many people with the standard installation directory that still get the problem, so I moved back to Program Files and fixed the ADS and priviliges for VCDS to work.

However previous version _did not_ have this issue beside being installed in the Program Files directory. But I guess that fact will still be ignored...

We're pretty sure we have it fixed now. This was introduced with translated 16.8.4 versions (enhanced info in About screen) and was due to the possibility of fetching values outside of an array's size in memory. Sorry about that; fixed builds should be up shortly.
