    07 Touareg TDI: AFS fault. Need help coding FFS

    So the little lady's VW has the amazing headlights that self level and look around corners. They also "side light", which isn't as riveting as side boob but it's still pretty cool. It's an H3 bulb and really does add some lumens to maneuvering operations. Some of those peasants can be tricky to locate.

    Until it doesn't work.
    You know the drill. Right headlight looks like a really expensive aquarium one day. There's also no main beam and no side light. I remove the headlight assembly using the factory tool - the one that turns those shitty gears that might have worked for the first year after the car was made. The reason they get jacked up is because there's no indication of which direction you turn them (righty tighty doesn't apply to both lights) and being cheezy and hard to turn, well... But that's not why I'm here.

    To fix the main beam I went old school. Bulbs are not cheap and neither are the control modules. I swapped modules with the left headlight and the problem remained on the right. So it was the bulb. Done.

    After draining the swamp I examined the assembly and found that the AFS module resides in the very bottom of the tank, and has openings facing upward

    Viola. Some genius right here

    I know it actually looks pretty good in that picture, but when I shook all the water out it was fuzzy - like something old in fridge. I laughed and thought of Jack, and douched it out with oven cleaner and water followed by a thorough air dry. I installed it back in the vehicle, and of course it was tango uniform. At least the headlight and turn signals worked. We've continued to get the AFS warning on the dash which stayed on and continues still. I really just wanted the serial number off the unit so I could scrounge.

    And Scrounge, I did.
    $300-ish retail. Look in there. There are more components in the AFS module than my uncle's entire model T Ford. I found one brand new in Lithuania for $100 ebay and it's here. I installed it.

    Cleared my codes, updated my VCDS and firmware. My coding experience is very limited. Very.

    I dig this out of my scan today:

    A lot of "not coded" going on there. I've done a search and I don't find much on AFS errors nor digging myself out.

    Any help appreciated.

    Sorry, feeling a little retarded right now after a little RTFM

    I could still probably use some tips if anyone thinks it might be of help.

    These are your main issues:
    Subsystem 2 - Part No: ID-R fehlt Labels: ID-55-02.CLB
    Component: AFS-Lst.-Modul r ....

    02234 - Right Headlight Power Output Stage (J668)
    004 - No Signal/Communication - MIL ON
    Part number "missing" because of communication problem (see Wiki here), when that is fixed, the coding is also fixed.

    Much obliged. I'm stuck in the area not heavily detailed in the manual.

    Between it, the VW factory pages and an open session of VCDS i located the lights under 09 Central Electronics. The coding step is over arching and appears to trickle down to sub components (according to VW)

    I don't understand where i enter the unit part number (same as the old)

    I was blocked by security. Now i see the security code if i follow the wiki to the golf section.

    Obviously the software is written to accommodate a wide range of vehicles and it is not exactly intuitive to those of us who are mostly comfortable with things that bleed oil instead of smoke.

    You don't enter it. The 55 module reads it from the AFS module when there's communications between the two. Right now...

    The engineering problems are likely insurmountable. It would be like proposing to land a rocket booster section on a barge floating in the middle of the ocean.

    Possibilities:
    * Defective module
    * Incompatible module
    * Lack of power
    * Problem with wiring

    *module brand new including part number
    *and identical to old
    *Does the module have its own fuse ?
    *That would be surprising [/s]

    And from an overseas supplier at a price that's "too good".

    I'm not saying the replacement module is the problem, but I wouldn't rule it out either.
