Questions:
1. What kind of camshaft damage would occur that would be not visibly detectable and allow the engine to run? Something slightly bent/twisted? When turning the engine by hand (plugs out) there is some uneven resistance, but I attributed that to lifters or ring drag.
I would look deeper into this. We went through it couple years ago with 1,8 TFSI. Some cams were rotated around shaft when chain was broken and pistons met valves. Those modern camshafts are not made from one piece of metal anymore. Separate cams are pressed or contact-welded on shaft...
In my case engine worked perfect at idle but got misfires while driving.
