I have a US speed MK6 Jetta and a 2012 Beetle that I am going to be taking to Canada, so I wanted to switch the instrument cluster to display the mileage as kilometers instead of miles. After poking around in module 17 (Instruments) I couldn't find any way to change the display, although I did see that the mileage is stored in KMS already.

Anyone have any idea's on how to make my car display the current mileage as KMS? Here's the Beetle dump.

Instrument Cluster -> Long Coding, Byte 0 -- Try changing the Country to one that uses kilometers rather than miles. Canada might be a good choice.

I tried that on the Beetle, applied it and closed the controller but the instrument cluster continued showing miles. Do you think it needs to have the battery removed then reconnected to cold boot the module?

No, it should not be necessary to "cold boot" it. However, and ignition cycle (with the ignition OFF for a while) might be called for.

I unplugged the battery for 20 minutes, and when it's connected agin the Odometer still read's Miles. When I flip through the control stalk options the outside temp and water temp both show in Celsius. Looking at the Instruments module again it shows coded for Canada and it's clearly changed the temperature display options but not the fuel capacity (still in gallons) and the distance displays are still in Miles.

This is from the Beetle:

The Beetle should have an Adaption Channel:
IDE03346-IDE00301 -- Units adjusted, with the choice being Miles or Kilometers. In fact, you may want to look at all of the Units channels.

Changed to Germany - no change.

Temperature in Celcius (Good!)
Distance in Miles, NOT KMS
Volume in Gallons, NOT Litres.

In 2010, the first year of the Mk6 Golf/GTI here, you could change the coding and get the alternative units to display but as of 2011 a lot of Mk6 based clusters quit supporting it. I like the German test idea just to see if the units change, but if all alternative coding is accepted and the units just won't change you may need another cluster. Since the cluster is the Immobilizer I wouldn't worry about it ... unless that's a legal requirement for importing the car.

That certainly makes sense as this is a 2014.

Changing to German leaves me in the same state - Celsius for Temperature, but still Miles and Gallons. I took Uwe's advice and stepped through each of the adaption Unit entries, and they are all currently set to the German metric settings, which is exactly what I want. Unfortunately the instrument cluster still displays Miles.

I went through and tried toggling some values to see if anything changed, but it looks like there is some other unknown adaption that changes the actual display.

Canadian import regulations say a sticker can be placed inside the cluster to indicate the value is in Miles, but that's a poor approach. Since the car is storing the value internally as KMS and converting to Miles for display I'd love to be able to force the display to switch back to it's native KMS.

Any other ideas?

Forget it. I've tried 100 times.

I've also changed the EEPROM data manually, which resulted in units in metric/celsius, but the logos got lost.

Only possible way i could imagine for this, "half jetta/half transporter" - Jetta with PQ25 electronics, is to find a canadian cluster, your case 5C6920853B and get the immo matched at dealer or 3rd party.

This can be done only direct modification in cluster eeprom software , and it will show correct numbers for kilometers but it will not show Km at it end like miles, like golfi_vend mention.
I will post some pictures tomorrow what I am talking about.
Base (Small LCD) cluster is like that , it is really different then Full High ( Big LCD ) cluster.
Like golfi_vend said best option get Canadian cluster and program it.

I can help you on programing.

Hi,
I stumbled across this as I'm trying to do the reverse - switch the odo into miles from km on a car I imported from Japan to the UK.
Would greatly appreciate instructions on how to edit the EEPROM.
