I'm replacing my old OEM battery with a new Bosch agm battery.
To inform the car about the new battery, it needs the batterys manufacturer and the serial number.

It knows some of the manufacturers, I.e. Varta but not Bosch.

It's an S5 A08 battery into a polo 6R with recuperation and start stop system.

I'm replacing my old OEM battery with a new Bosch agm battery.
To inform the car about the new battery, it needs the batterys manufacturer and the serial number.

It knows some of the manufacturers, I.e. Varta but not Bosch.

It's an S5 A08 battery into a polo 6R with recuperation and start stop system.

iichel: Good morning. I'm aware of the 4x adaptation channels that appear in Ross Tech's video and that are present in UDS control modules regarding battery data, but I wonder whether all 4 x bits of information are equally important?

I'm very happy to be told otherwise by more knowledgeable folk here, but in my experience the only important channels for battery replacement appear to be the AMP rating and the serial number. And even the veracity of the serial number appears to be unimportant - what actually seems to be required is that the number is different from the old number ( my conclusion about serial number veracity results from my observation that all of the factory settings for the battery serial numbers in my database are simply a string of "1"s)! I'm less certain about the battery construction type, but I always try to align this with the new battery type just because it's generally a piece of information that I know!

So, my hypothesis (subject to RT/other-expert comment) is that matching the battery brand is unimportant!

I generally agree. We have six battery brands documented for this car, but Bosch is not among them.

Battery Size, Vendor and Serial Number go in Adaptation Channel 04. Battery Type (Wet / AGM / EFB) are in Byte 02 of the Long Coding.

Please leave at least the first 10 digits of the VIN so we can see the model year of the car. Dropping the last 4-5 digits is more than sufficient if you are concerned about privacy.

I agree, too. Battery type and capacity are important data and have to be entered to match the battery installed. Brand is not important and serial number, I think, is needed only for dealers to make sure customer will not try to cheat warranty for battery :D

I do not even know why the people do this, as you can see on most cars VIN under windshield.
I mean what you will do with VIN number anyway?

Offtopic, a bit... :D
I can imagine the only one reason - privacy of our customers, planning to sell their cars and roll back odo or hide from potentional buyer what faults car had before and odo readings at the moment someone of us did scan and posted it here. To see VIN behind windshield, You have to be close to car, to find info on Internet, it's enough to know how and where to do some search.

MartinsX: I'm interested in your comment about serial number being unimportant? I had assumed that it was important to tell the car that a new battery was installed and that changing the serial number to anything that wasn't the old serial number was required. You response suggests that this isn't the case (other than for the "warranty reason")

My assumption (and it's just that, an assumption) is based on my understanding that later models (especially those with Start Stop) kept battery history data when making decisions about functions that relied on battery performance ( like the calculation of battery temperature for SS). My assumption was based on the presence of J367 (Battery monitor) and it's role in measuring electrical current flow in-and-out-of the battery. I had thought that changing the serial number had the effect of resetting the battery history data. Are you suggesting that (other than for the warranty issue) there is no reason to alter the serial number when a new battery is installed?

I'm not sure about SS system. How I understand, battery control module "know" the new battery is installed every time when any battery parameters are readapted/recoded. If You install exactly the same type and capacity battery (the best option, I think), the only one parameter that can be changed is serial number. So anyway You have to change at least one symbol in it.
This is my personal assumption, I'm not sure everything is true and not sure all battery control modules acts exactly the same way. Have seen some first cars with battery control modules (A6 C6 MY 2006, for example) accepting only old already discontinued VAG battery partnumbers. New replacement battery numbers, found in ETKA, are not accepted. Just requires some reverse investigation what capacity and type was each battery by each acceptable partnumber and then program partnumber that is closer to battery I'm installing in car.

Thanks guys for the feedback. It's also my belief that's it's more of a counter than a smart system.
So changing the serial should do the trick since the capacity does not change. From 70Ah AGM to 70Ah AGM.

What uwe mentioned is indeed correct. Bit 02 of the coding holds the type while the serial, manufacturer and capacity are in the adaptation channel 04

But as with everything, I would like to do it properly haha. I'll simply update the serial.

The vin goes wvwzzz6rzby######

For original batteries, take the values off the BEM-Code sticker. Done.

For aftermarket batteries, we have to differentiate. Some systems will require you to enter type and capacity directly, there it's easy. For the others, look up the closest part number of an original battery that matches your aftermarket battery specifications. Bosch doesn't make batteries, those are re-branded Varta's. There you have your vendor code too. The serial number is used as an indicator for a new cycle of history data. Which means, once a serial number is entered that wasn't used in this car before, a new dataset will be created/started and from there the actual magic will begin. If in doubt, increment the last digit by one and save that as the new value (i.e. 0000000009 to 0000000010) The Battery and Energy Management (BEM) will actually calculate the battery aging etc. based on the values read through the Battery Data Module (BDM).

It's really not rocket science, you know... ;)

FWIW, the vendor actually makes a difference. If you look at the actual characteristic maps which are stored in the control module, you will see different charging curves/characteristics for different combinations. That said, of course vendor and serial number are also used for warranty purposes.

Danke Sebastian, thank you for your input. I've installed the new battery and set the vendor to Varta, with the serial that's written on the Bosch sticker. It works well and the battery regulator is happy so far.

Thank you all for the information; however, how would you code for the following:

Braille Battery
GU1R - 12v Lithium Ion
https://www.braillebattery.com/index.php/braille/product_batteries/gu1r

It would appear that there is no precise way to code this type of battery.

No precise way? I don't think there's anything even close.

TBH, I think trying to use a Li-ion battery in a car with a charging system that's not designed for it is terrible idea. As a super lightweight starter battery in a race car, OK. But then you don't need a BEM. In a street car, I think you're playing with fire. I use Li-ion cells in another application every day and I know how fussy they are about the exact charging protocol.

I appreciate the feedback. I made the decision to go with the GU1R because of the success several folks on the Mk6 platform had with it. They just dropped the GU1R in and ran with it. No adverse issues using it on the Mk6 and at least one of them has 2+ years running it.

I'll contact Braille after the holiday weekend and get their input. Any idea who manufacturers the BEM module for the Mk7?

Had some time tonight and was able to adapt the following:

IDE03256-MAS06105-Battery adaptation-Rated battery capacity Adapted to "39" Ah

IDE03256-MAS06106-Battery adaptation-Battery technology Adapted to "Lithium ions" - this was a selectable value within the control module on the Mk. 7 Golf R

IDE03256-MAS06107-Battery adaptation-Battery manufacturer Adapted to "Braille Battery", however, when it accepted it shortened to "Bra"

IDE03256-MAS06108-Battery adaptation-Battery Serial Number Adapted from "ille Battery" to the serial number provided with new battery purchase "XXXXXXX"

Interesting how the "ille Battery" was carried over to the Battery Serial number from the Battery Manufacturer adaptation.

I logged the following in VCDS after the changes were made with the engine running:

Address 19: CAN Gateway (5Q0 907 530 AC)

21:38:47
IDE01834 Battery voltage 13.705 V
IDE06468-MAS06317 Battery model-Specification rated battery voltage from BTM 13.3 V
IDE08346-MAS06117 Generator Analysis-Rated voltage 14.3 V
IDE08346-MAS06864 Generator Analysis-Generator actual voltage 14.1 V

As I cycled on the headlights, radio and A/C system these numbers changed dynamically. I'm a bit concerned with the Battery Model Specification rated battery voltage from BTM 13.3 V, however, that's what the rated battery voltage is for Lithium ions within the control module. I still plan to contact Braille Battery on Tuesday to get their feedback.

I take back my comment that there's nothing close. That'll teach me to shoot from the hip without asking for an Auto-Scan and actually looking at what the possibilities in that car are.

I should have taken a screenshot of all the selectable battery technologies. I'd say there were 6+ different types to choose from.
