Hi all, I recently purchased a 9N Polo TDI Sport (AMF engine) which requires a little work, I’ve been investigating the main issues but now require some assistance. The main problem is with the lack of power steering – when I first picked it up the steering warning light was permanently on and the glowplug light was flashing, the fault “01309 - Power Steering Control Module (J500), 49-00 - No Communications” comes up on a few modules (Address 09: Cent. Elect.; Address 17: Instruments; Address 19: CAN Gateway) and I could not get communications with the steering assist module. I noticed this entry on the wiki http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/01309 -

“If 01309 is stored in multiple Control Modules and the Steering Aid (#44/J500) does not communicate with the Scan tool, check the Steering Aid Control Module Power Supply. Assuming the Fused Power Supplies (typically 2 fuses are used) are OK, in almost all cases the actual Steering Rack (containing the Control Module) is faulty and needs to be replaced.”

After a bit of investigation I found that fuse F7 had blown. This was replaced and the steering light went out and I could communicate with the steering module, until the engine was started. After starting the engine it reverted back to its previous state with no comms and warning light on. The fuse was still intact but by the next day the battery had discharged, so something on this circuit is drawing current with the ignition off…

The wiki comment on 01309 states the control module is contained in the steering rack, but as far as I can tell the only electronics in the rack is the steering angle sensor, plus when I could communicate the steering module VCDS listed the manufacturer (TRW) and Part No. for the pump. I’m happy to be proved wrong here but surely the control module is in the pump unit?

I’m leaning towards going ahead and replacing the pump but as it’s a significant cost compared to what I paid for the car I’m hesitant to do this until I have further proof, your thoughts would appreciated.

If I were to replace the pump I understand that there is some configuration to do in VCDS, does anyone have information on how to carry this out?

Another issue is that I have the code “16955 - Brake Switch (F) P0571 - 35-00 - Implausible Signal”, I have replaced the RH bulb and the switch on the pedal and the brake lights work but the fault is still present even after a DTC Clear, is there something else I’m missing?

I'm not too worried about the Air Con faults at the moment (unless this circuit can affect anything else), a job for another day.

Apologies for the long first post but trying to cover everything, if anything else is required or if I've done something incorrectly please let me know.

Thanks!

I don't know much about 9N Polos at all, but that was an excellent first post; descriptive of the problem, clearly phrase questions, before-and-after scan data properly wrapped in CODE tags. Thank you!

Now hopefully someone that knows these cars will chime in here.

Okay what's all the fuses look like...........supply voltage relay and wake from gateway 0x19 or 0x09 BCM?

I would open the wring diagram and familiarize myself with all power paths terminal 30 B+ and terminal 15 B+ switched, and all terminal 31 ground circuits.

In this case I would want to also check the CAN high/low and all shared devices for a possible communication disruption.
This can also be done in VCDS by deselecting them one at a time and isolating within the gateway installed list............ just to test.

Thanks for the reply, I have already checked the fuses and they are fine.

A big problem I have is access to a decent wiring diagram, the ones in the Haynes manual are not very comprehensive and do not include the electrical power steering system at all. Pictured is the most relevant one I have, but this shows items that are not even present on my car such as an oil level/temp sensor...

I've tried getting information from VWs erWin site but it won't accept either of my cards for some reason.

I'm afraid I'd need your other advice to be explained a little further as I'm relatively new to VCDS and am unsure what you mean...

I have had a further inspection around the pump - the wires to the angle sensor check out ok, the 2 larger gauge power supply wires are also fine, not knowing where the other connector goes prevents me from checking these though. However, it does appear that a previous owner has been poking around here too as the retaining lugs for both of the smaller connectors have broken off and they were secured with cable ties, which doesn't fill me with confidence. I'm also curious as to whether the pump has already been replaced in the past as there is some yellow writing on it, the sort that a breakers yard would use to label parts, I could be wrong as it's indecipherable but who knows?

On the plus side, the brake switch fault has know successfully cleared and the glowplug light has stopped flashing.

Well you need to sort that out with your credit card company/bank because Erwin works and does have the WD you need.

I'll also add the notes on this page

Special Notes

When found in VW Polo (9N), Seat Ibiza (6L), Skoda Fabia (6Y) or similar:

If 01309 is stored in multiple Control Modules and the Steering Aid (#44/J500) does not communicate with the Scan tool, check the Steering Aid Control Module Power Supply. Assuming the Fused Power Supplies (typically 2 fuses are used) are OK, in almost all cases the actual Steering Rack (containing the Control Module) is faulty and needs to be replaced. Be aware that there are different Suppliers for these Parts and make sure to order your Replacement accordingly.

If fuse SB7 is blown check to see if another component on that circuit, such as N79 (Heater element for crankcase breather), is faulty.

.. were from Polo feedback.

Made a little progress today, I think I found what initially caused SB7 to blow - the wiring to the oil level/temperature sensor (G266) had rubbed through the insulation and must have shorted out. My first thought was that G266 had failed and was causing problems so I disconnected it, checked VCDS and could get comms with the steering control module. I thought it looked promising but after starting the engine it lost comms again and I was back to where I started, all subsequent attempts to re-establish comms with the steering module were unsuccessful. SB7 was still intact.

All other modules appear to communicate without issue.

I checked the B+ switched supply to both the steering pump and G266 and these are both fine, however with the ignition switched off these show 0.2V and continuity to ground (though with a resistance of ~500ohms), does this sound correct?

Did you try unplugging N79 (or any other components on that fused circuit) to see if 44 communicates both key on and engine running? I'm wondering if the lack of 44 communication at idle may be related to something on the K-line or PT databus rather than a power supply problem at this point.

After a fair amount of wiring checks I went ahead and replaced the pump last night, I now get reliable comms with the steering module but now have "00816 - Power Steering Sensor (G250) 37-00 - Faulty" which will not clear. Looks like this will have to be changed as well.

The pump had definitely been replaced in the past, and quite badly too as one of the bracket mounting holes has a partially stripped thread :(

I can't see that N79 is fitted, theres just a pipe from the cam cover to the inlet with no heater element present.

I replaced the steering angle sensor (G250) last night and the power steering is now working :D, however I still have the steering warning light on the dash and "00816 - Power Steering Sensor (G250) 37-00 - Faulty" is still present and will not clear. Any ideas?
