I went through the steps found below to enable Tail-light illumination when hatch open on my 2016 NAR 1.8 FSI Golf Sportwagen w/lighting pkg. Unfortunately the result is nothing happened. :( Does anyone know if these steps are outdated or missing anything? All the channels found in the list below are present on my vehicle.

Tail-light illumination when hatch open - Safety feature

  1. Select 09 - Central Electr control module
  2. Select Security Access - 16 from the "Open Controller" screen
  3. Enter the magic number 31347 and return to the "Open Controller" screen
  4. Select Adaptation - 10 from the "Open Controller" screen
  5. From the pull-down button check that the default settings for the adaptation channels shown in the table below for either your RoW or NAR vehicle are as indicated in the RoW/NAR Setting column
  6. For the car type (i.e. RoW, or NAR), change the adaptation channels depicted in the table below to the values in the New Setting column (use the "Search" box to locate the correct channels)

^^^^^ quailallstar: First, please accept my apology for providing a "dubious" tweak. In my defense, in was extrapolating the RoW version onto your model vehicles in America so it was obviously untested. I've implemented the RoW version of tweak on my car and it works OK.

I wrote the tweak some time ago before I built my "test-bench". Now that I have the facility, I'll configure the Leuchte21BR RC8 Leuchte-set to NAR mode and try your version and report back.

Don!

I didn't realize you were on here. Thanks for commenting and trying to help. In the meantime, I'm going to revert all the changes made back to how they were before I performed the changes.

quailallstar: Hello again - as promised, I turned my test bench into a NAR vehicle (complete with that quaint American accent that all you folk seem to have)!

Short answer is that the NAR version tweak work exactly as designed. The only feature that I didn't mention (and had I thought of it at the time of writing, I would have mentioned) is the enforced priority of the new function when it competes against the other functions for these two lamps. Hmm....... I not explaining this well, but your existing two outer tail lights currently perform 3 x functions: brakelight, turn-signal and parker. By adding the open hatch light function at the end of the Leuchte-set, I'm giving this function the highest priority whenever you ask the lights to do one of the other functions. This means that the hatch light function will always win when the lamp is asked to perform one of the other functions at the same time!

In an ideal world, I would have re-arranged the priority sequence, but I can remember thinking at the time that originally wrote the tweak that since it would be very unlikely that anyone would travel with the tail-gate open, the potential clash with the other functions was minimal. My primary driver for writing the tweak this way was to keep the changes to the Leuchte-sets down to a minimum (changing the priority levels would have necessitated a wholesale change to nearly all of the Leuchte-set values). Hope that this makes sense - I can write it without my Aussie accent if it doesn't!!

To be clear I had previously re-programed my 4 tail lights to behave differently than NAR stock. Will that coding have anything to do with me proceding to try and re-code for the tail light illumination when hatch open?

My lights do the following:

Left lights perform 3 x functions: brake light, turn-signal and parker [outer\inner] (VW) [outer\inner] Shown here as turn signal in operation.

Right lights perform 3 x functions: brake light, turn-signal and parker [outer\inner] (VW) [outer\inner] Shown here as turn signal in operation.

^^^^^ hmmm............ given the evidence from my recently Americanized test-bench and your latest information, I suspect that this may well be the problem. Not sure how keen you are to implement the tweak, but if you post-up the current settings for a complete Leuchte-set from one of the outer tail lights (i.e. 19 x adaptation channels), I'll investigate further

How can I capture the current settings for the complete Leuchte-set?

There are two ways that immediately come to mind for providing the information (I'm sure that there others):

First option - you could create an adaptation channel map for the BCM, then paste the results here between the "code" tags. See the video below at about 2.15 minutes

Second option - populate the setting (manually) for the adaptation channels below on your car (this is the Leuchte-set for the right-side outer tail):

Thanks for that link. VCDS did not want to cooperate with attempting to map out the controller via the application function. I followed the tutorial 100% using the function to map out channel 09; mapping started but immediately closes and mapping options screen comes up again.

Went ahead and manually mapped the below for you. Note I changed my lights back to how I had them coded before attempting your modification.

And I forgot to show you what I had done to re-code my tail lights into using both outer and inner as, blinker, brake and parking lights.

These are the changes I made to make the signal light go completely off even when the running lights were on. It also adds the same functionality to the inner lights. So the inner lights work the same as the outer, brake light, running light, and signal light.

Central Electronics 9
Left Inner Tail light functions as runner/brake/ signal.

Blinken Links Dunkelphase

Right Inner Tail light functions as runner/brake/ signal
8 leuchte24sl HRA65-Lichtfunktion C24
Brake Light
9 leuchte24sl HRA65 - Lichtfunction D 24
Blinken Rechts Hellphase
10 leuchte24sl HRA65 - dimmwert CD 24

Left Signal completely goes out between blinks.

^^^^^ Qailallstar:Your problem is with the adaptation channel setting ENG116956-ENG116270-Leuchte20BR LA71-Dimming Direction GH 20 MINIMIZE. By applying the "minimize" command to the GH "alpa-pair" (in conjunction with a CD Dimmwert setting of 100), you are telling the BMC that you want to completely dim the illumination of the outer tails whenever you open the rear hatch, which pretty-much aligns with your observations! It's an easy mistake to make - Leuchte commands can be very confusing!

The correct setting for this adaptation channel is MAXIMIZE as per the last line in my original instructions

Don!

Wow do I feel like an idiot now :banghead: Something so small I made a mistake in coding made me believe this wouldn't work. I appreciate you noticing my oversight with the Leuchte commands. Going to attempt this again, correctly, and report back my findings.

It worked!!! Works when the car is running and not running. Doesn't impact my other 4 brake light modification either. :D

Thank you again Don!
