More often than not, the fuel gauge would show a full tank no matter what the level was. Instrument cluster had a 01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded fault code.
Cluster soft coding was wrong, car is a Quattro, but not coded for it along with some other issues, recoded and fixed that, 01044 cleared out. Fuel gauge still showing full tank.
Tech had already found a failed G169 fuel level sensor and replaced it and the other one seemed fine.
Fuel Level Sensor -G- installed:
* Sensor at lower stop: approximately 760 to 1003 Ohms.
* Sensor at upper stop: approximately 70 to 105 Ohms.
Fuel Level Sensor 2 -G169- installed:
* Sensor at lower stop: approximately 790 to 975 Ohms.
* Sensor at upper stop: approximately 50 to 86 Ohms.
Checked and double checked that out, seems good.
MVB 026 shows raw data from level sensors, cross checked with DMM, seems good.
In talking with the tech, mentioned that the battery was some aftermarket deal and was a "poor fit", sounds like the battery was a drunken install or something. I give my canned speech about the OE battery with the BEM code and how that is important.
Tech calls back less than 1 hour later... OE battery installed and coded, fuel gauge is now working and showing correct fuel level.
TL/DR... wrong battery installed and fuel gauge didn't work. Correct battery installed and coded, fuel gauge works.
