I have a '05 MK4 Jetta tdi manual transmission that is(or appears to be) leaking gear oil from around the out put shafts. It is hard to think that the seals just went bad on both sides, but maybe. Does anyone have any knowledge on this situation that you would be willing to share with me. Thoughts on if I should just replace the seals, and start a good procedure for replacing them is?

On this kind of miles you can expect leak.
Specially if you chnage fluid in past with none original one.
Always use OE VW fluid on VAG group cars. The fluid is not expansive and works perfect on all VAG group cars. And my recommendation is to chnage it every 80k.

Bullshit if oil meets the specification...... it's fine.......don't drink the Kool-Aid.

Mechanical parts wear out.......!

Ever consider maybe it's not gear oil and maybe engine oil from maybe the VC or vacuum pump area?

Have you checked the DIF oil, and is there play in the DIF output flanges?

The DIF over time can be damaged from wear and bore a hole in the bell housing, or the clutch could explode and do the same inverse to the worm/pinion gear area.

It's a manual trans. Does it have separate differential oil?

-Uwe-

That's my question too...

I'm sure it is gear oil (smell).

DIF oil and the trans oil,....... as a "transaxle" are the same In this vehicle.

If you are sure it's gear oil then fix the leaks and check the backlash of the output flanges and refill.

Maybe at 230K consider a new, reman, or low miles gearbox

I ordered the seals and fluid.. I think it won't be on until next week. I will take it apart and inspect for wear or excessive play.. I'll let you know what happens..

Started taking it apart, and I think there is some excessive part in the out put shafts. So, 2 questions:

Does anyone know what the tolerances are for the output shafts?

What are your thoughts on disassembling the transmission and replacing worm parts, vs just replacing it with a different transmission?

There should not be any play. But I am talking about part that goes in transmission( differential axle flange), Many people will grab drive axle and see free play in and think differential flange has free play.

The transmission is cheaper to buy complete from dealer, than it is to buy the internal parts to repair + you save labor.
FYI :
Reman units from dealer are new..........VAG just write an X to part # and further get the cores......... so the AFT can't attempt to do rebuilds.

Post a JPPSG and auto-scan

It is definitely inside the transmission, I have the CV axles unbolted from the flanges.

At the time I posted the original thread, I wasn't sure if there were any quick or simple ways to replace the bearings in the diff or the output shaft bearings.. I see now that it is basically as deep in the trans as you can go... I'm not rebuilding/fixing it. Now, I'm looking into replacing it.

2005 MK4 Jetta TDI wagon 5 speed manual completely stock everything (but the radio)

I don't have current auto scan but here is an old one:
