2011 Sportswagen - many outside light errors, but intermittent

The problem started yesterday on my 2011 JSW TDI. The amber "light bulb" MIL turned on, and a slew of messages such as "Check your left brake light, " Check your rear license plate light," etc. scrolled through.

All lights are stock and still original bulbs. I did a walk around check with an assistant operating the light switch and stalk inside the car, and a bunch of lights were indeed out. On one side: driving light, the rear brake light, etc., and on the other side: turn signal, headlight, etc., plus license plate and third brake light in the middle.

All bulbs are ok; all filaments are intact (and they would turn on again the in the evening - see below),
Fuses are all good,
VCDS scan returned 11 Central Electronic faults 0010: 00979, 00985, 01497, etc. Here's the full scan at pastebin.com (can unmask VIN if needed).
After sunset and the temp has dropped a bit, tried the lights and all worked!
This morning, I waited for the sun to cook the car on the driveway, and the issues returned. Car was not moved.

Any thoughts? Relay? Headlight switch? Wiring harness? I'm hoping it's something easy to fix.

(FWIW, Navigation is also returning CD Changer fault but I don't think it's related).

- Can someone point me to any particular wiring harness I should check? I haven't worked on this car that much.
- Main ground point near battery is ok. Coated it with Deoxit when dealer replaced battery under warranty.
- Open to plus, exactly means?

That's not a full scan, that's just data from the 09-BCM module. A full scan includes all the modules.

It means Open circuit or short circuit to plus, I always say positive. It means it getting another power feed from somewhere.

Bad ground/corrosion most likely............or bad module.........and yeah modules can go bad sporadic based on temp or humidity.

Have you performed outputs in 0x09-03 ?
While condition exists.

Well, it's always preferable to post an entire Auto-Scan as opposed to a snippet containing data from just one module. The modules in modern cars are so heavily networked and interdependent that there are often clues in other modules.

If I were a betting man, my money would be on a flaky module. If all the faults were at one end of the car, I'd check to see if all those lights and such had a common ground point and suspect that ground point as being loose or corroded. But your faults are at both the front and the rear of the car, so I doubt they all have a common ground.

So I was curious and disconnected the battery yesterday for a while. It's a cooler day and after reconnecting it, the issues went away for the night (though I initially got Fuel Pressure Sensor, TPMS and Steering Assist faults that cleared after driving). Though the light issues were (temporarily) gone, 3 new faults came up - from 09: "02092 - Enabling Heated Seat
009 - Open or Short to Ground" and from 4F: Cent Elect II (J520) "01512 - Control Module for Sliding Roof | 02907 - Control Module for Roof Shade (J394), 004 - No Signal/Communication" (see autoscan). The panoramic moon roof and the shade now wouldn't open.

And this morning, the light issues came back. I re-checked all the fuses on the side panel and the engine bay; they were all good, no sign of overheating/melting.

I'm going to replace the BCM. There are so many part numbers for mk5/mk6. My 2011 JSW has the 5K0 937 084 E. I found a used one listed locally from a 2012 GTI, 1K0 937 086 P. Would it be compatible?

Only install part # s that are correct with continuity or superseded by your local dealer based on VIN #/production date and PR-codes from white tag in trunk/service book.

Before replacement.

I would try to default the controller by recoding and changing the WSC and clearing learned values in 0x09-10-00 test/save.

Reboot.

If that didn't help I would then take module out/disassemble and inspect the traces for any hot spots/damage/corrosion....clean connectors.
If none found
I would also take a heat gun to it to reflow all the solder joints of the chip sets. ( be careful )

Then one more time try the default above.
If it didn't work and all harness's were proper/with good grounds............ I would change the module.
