While I was clearing fault codes in my 2005 S4 cabriolet, B6 8H BHF 4.2 V8, my laptop died. The engine started running rough after the scan, returning codes of:

4 Faults Found:

16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0300 - 001 - - MIL ON
16685 - Cylinder 1
P0301 - 001 - Misfire Detected - MIL ON
16687 - Cylinder 3
P0303 - 001 - Misfire Detected - MIL ON
16686 - Cylinder 2
P0302 - 002 - Misfire Detected - MIL ON

Readiness: N/A

Several other cylinders also misfire - 7 and 4. The complete scans are listed below.
Should I somehow recode or re-adapt my ECU? If so, how do I do that? There are also communication problems with module 1.

I had just completed some extensive canbus repairs - using factory repair wires and a new driver's side wiring harness plug; the entire door connection was fatigued. The passenger seat control module was recently replaced, and I also cleaned the corrosion from the power top (comfort and convenience module) connections - so no more single wire mode of operation on the comfort bus.

I am a first time poster so if the scans and images are not correctly posted, I'll learn how and try again.

i am hoping this is not the dreaded timing chain tensioner failure or a plugged catalytic converter.

The other stuff you were working on does not strike me as related to this problem.

If an engine runs rough after clearing fault codes, chances are the fuel trims were off. Clearing fault codes resets them to nominal values.
Please have a look at our Wiki page about fuel trim. You may find the video at the bottom helpful as well.

You can't post pictures directly from your hard drive. Please see: How to Post Pictures.

Do you have the old scan before the car had codes cleared?

Please post a complete auto-scan and observe blocks for trims.

Water mist from spray bottle or garden hose usually helps find vacuum leaks fast.......further intensifying the misfire.

helpful/ thanks / next?

The videos are greatly appreciated - thanks.
The MIL light is on - in your experience, does the ECU re-map itself quickly, or are the catalytic converters at risk? It ran a little better after warming up for 15 minutes per Ross-tech's suggestion.

Should I just drive the car?

Or should I try to recover previously mapped values - if that is even possible.

Current values for group 32 look like this after warming up - I wonder if the lambda control = 0.0% is becasuse i cleared the DTC's.

Thank you for the response - I don't have an old scan that shows MB's 32 or 33, but I will run those shortly. I do have various old scans, but they don't show any other module 1 errors. Obviously, I should have run logs of MB's 32 and 33 before clearing fault codes - but should I have done anything else?

Something wonky is going on there. -14% on bank 1 and +9.5% on bank 2..!?!?

Remind me, does this engine have one MAF or two?

One MAF, S4 5 valve 4.2 v8, timing chain motor. It became smoother at 1300 RPM, no misfires a t that speed. Idles rough though. The wonkiness started after my errant DTC clearing / laptop failure...wish i had not done that.

New scans: Misfire on 1-4 cylinders, MIL light on from misfires at idle.

Uwe, thank you for enclosing my scan in
Code:
 blocks.
Jack@ European, I don't have access to my VAG-COM at the moment - but I will correctly post a complete auto scan tomorrow, complete with code tags. Thank you for your patience.
More recent scans show only misfires, similar to the first scan I posted, but extending to cylinder 4 as well. None recently on cylinders 5-8.

Code:
16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0300 - 001 - - MIL ON
16685 - Cylinder 1
P0301 - 001 - Misfire Detected - MIL ON
16687 - Cylinder 3
P0303 - 001 - Misfire Detected - MIL ON
16686 - Cylinder 2
P0302 - 002 - Misfire Detected - MIL ON
I am heading out with a water mist bottle. Would RPM then drop (misfire intensifies?) with a spray? I resolved communication issues with the ECU by extending the timeout parameter in vag-com.

It should and log it with VCDS when you do this in case you cant see it.

Sounds like a intake leak , bad injector, coil pack ground being inadequate or insufficient fuel volume/PSI causing a timing chatter.

Jack, per your suggestion, I soaked the top of the engine thoroughly with a spray bottle (of reverse osmosis water-didn't want to leave any calcium!) but saw no change in rpm or misfire. That does not mean there is not one - I did see where vacuum lines had been repaired. I can see how the vacuum leak would be worst at idle.

I will run this again with VCDS when I have my laptop available.
Do you have a feel for the location of coil pack grounds in this car? Cylinders 1-4....that does make sense.
Is it worthwhile to pull valve covers to look at timing chains, or is that even possible or useful?
I am ordering plugs at the moment, and so will check and change those. i guess I can be thankful this problem is not intermittent.

Audi S4 B6 BHF Cabriolet misfire after aborted scan

Per request - Jack, sorry for the delay - Recent auto scan, passenger seat is removed (hence airbag warning, entry assist error. Key remote is now programmed.
New: It appears I have an exhaust leak at the flex joint of the catalytic converter.

Update - It appears that I may not have an exhaust leak, at least I cannot detect flow out of the flex joint at higher RPMs. The flex joint is visibly ripped at the end, but it does not appear that it was ever intended to be a seal, it looks like it is not a gas-tight mesh.

Any insight on how this flex joint works, if the mesh is a seal?

I also checked for the ECM firmware code G 0010 - it's status, though outdated, is no different than the code revision present during a scan 7 months ago. From the forum, there is a TSB 240850. It states that the ECM needs reprogramming because of the improper operation of the intake Camshaft Adjuster Valves. Not sure what would trigger this sudden change in idle roughness.

Vacuum leak on one side? Audi S4 BHF B6 8H Cabriolet 4.2 V8 2005

Is it possible to have a vacuum leak on one side, such that it makes one bank have large negative fuel additive numbers, while the other bank has large positive numbers? See the blocks 32- 33 scan posted previously...

I have not found the vacuum leak yet. There are vacuum leaks that have obviously been repaired. I have ordered new plugs, and will do a coil swap when they arrive. I like the idea as well of plugging the exhaust to see if the broken mesh leaks. Can one or two bad injectors, or plugs, or coils, make the whole bank go lean?

I will start another thread, but I noticed an old unrelated (?) intermittent problem that I can now reproduce: The red light in the passenger door malfunctions, when the passenger door lock malfunctions, when the window does not drop 2% on opening the door, when the door contact switch does not show the correct status in vag-com..all at once. Methinks perhaps the passenger door harness is worn at the door hinge, just like the driver's door was.

Divots in a piston...but hey, they are small divots.

Well, I am open to more optimistic viewpoints...

Here are pictures taken inside cylinder #1 with a 5mm camera. I see two shallow divots in the top of that piston. Coincidentally, that cylinder misfires first...After a while, all the cylinders in bank 1 misfire at idle. I also have a picture of the plugs here, 1,2,3 as numbered. No other pistons have divots. I have never heard the chain rattle, and I have been listening.

I have not yet done a compression test. The engine ran smooth, no misfires, above 1400 rpm, no smoke.

Anyone know any good sources for timing chain kits...valves...valve bushings...complete S4 BHF 4.2 liter V8 engines...people that want to buy S4 cabriolets...
On the bright side, the car no longer has canbus errors. And it's pretty. And my wife likes it.
