Hi guys, I'm a little new to all this so please be gentle with me!

I bought VCDS on a whim a while back as my old dumb lead died which I used to use on an old MSA van so I thought I'd buy the full version as we have 4 VAG vehicles in the house, its proved very useful thus far! :)

Anyway a friend with a VW Caddy (2k) asked if I could retrofit cruise control to his van and I agreed after a little research.

We have fitted the correct stalk and also changed the steering wheel controller as the fitted version (1k0953549BT) was lowline and wouldnt support cruise control. It was replaced with a (1K0953549CB) midline which was listed as suitable on the ross tech wiki.

I recoded the controller to suit the van but now we have a fault with the horn, its basically persistantly on. doing anything (button press/turn signal/flash/etc) will stop the horn briefly and then it will activate again.

Having looked in measuring blocks on the steering controller the horn is showing as activated. All other functions work as they should.

Only one thing to note is the van does not have a multi function display but if the controller is coded for cruise control on and display off it throws a code to say its incorrectly coded. Odd.

Anway here is the full autoscan, which includes the appropriate code (00889) for the horn fault. It states intermittent, which it isn't really.. its only intermittent as intervention with any other stalk function resolves this issue breifly.

We tried removing the airbag and taking the horn ground off just incase the apparent short was there, but no improvement.

Any guidance would be most welcome! :D

Please ignore the radio fault, thats something we've just discovered!

So today we've removed the wheel and clock spring to see if the clockspring was at fault. It appears its not.

With the wheel and clockspring removed the horn is still operating when either the SET- or RES+ buttons are pressed.

On controller 16 in measuring blocks

Group 03 Horn is showing as activated when Group 04 CCS-SET is either ACCEL or DELAY

Remember this is with the wheel and clockspring removed.

I'm leaning towards the steering wheel controller being faulty as I'm baffled as to how anything else could be causing this?

I'd be very grateful for anyones input.

The original controller was a 1K0-953-549-BT and was replaced with a 1K0-953-549-CB

The only difference is the BT controller was SW Version 0100 and the new CB controller is SW Version 0101

Would the SW version be an issue?

I had a similar problem. Guy came with bought steering module, bough from a guy at our local vwclub. Originally the module was coded to have steering buttons, after i coded those out the horn also started to be on all time. It isn't problem with horn itself, cause i tested the module, while it was hanging and only wiring connected was the wiring from the car and iginition switch. Tried my old module, that didn't have the issue, but as it used different type of slip ring, the airbag wouldn't turn off.

At the moment, car is driving around without horn relay connected.

I do not suspect the SW version is the issue but 1K0-953-549-BT appears to supersede directly to 1K0-953-549-CC and that is the number shown by VIN using PartsLink24 as well. According to our Wiki page 1K0-953-549-CC is a Highline unit so that would be my personal recommendation based on the goofy horn operation you describe.

The incorrect slip ring could cause issues as golfi_vend explained and 1K0-959-653-C appears to be compatible with the mentioned CC unit but you may want to take a look at the installed component to see which one is installed.

Forgot to add, that when i test-installed my old steering module, horn worked as it should. Seems like there is a hardware/software problem in some modules.

Hi, I’m new to this forum and I was looking for help to install cruise control to 2009 VW caddy. I found this old thread and this horn issue worries me. The caddy I have has this same 1k0953549BT control module originally and 1k0953549CA or ...CB would be well available in ebay as used item, but will I run to horn troubles with it? 1k0953549CC modules are not that well available. Mostly only from China as new items and honestly I would trust more to an used item.

My advise use CH if you have BT. Never had problem with this even if its highline. Just recode without mfsw.

@sjs order from China is no problem all work like same. Many parts come from China and will be labeled as “made in Germany” ;)

Thank you @vastechincs for the answer. Unfortunately seems that also this CH isn’t that well available, only from China. Sorry, but still I don’t feel comfortable buying this kind of item from there and also it takes way longer to come. Seems that 1k0953549BG, which is an highline unit, has better availability. Would that suit also to my Caddy? Seems that it is originally in couple of years older cars than mine, but does that make any difference?

Try Aidu Auto. Very recommended!
BG can also use. Believe me, working with parts from China for years never had problems.
