I have been using a HEX-CAN for years professionally, and due to the continued stress/failure on usb ports as well as convenience of wireless, decided HEX-NET was the way to go. I have owned the tool almost 2 weeks now, and have used on at least 20 vehicles.

Computer is an ACER Aspire V5. (cheap, but for shop use only, does what it needs to do)

When using the HEX-NET in infrastructure mode (IN SHOP), it works flawlessly. Auto scans are lightning fast, and can be done with the laptop on my tool box!

When using wifi mode (outside of shop), I experience some issues:
- Sporadic error messages "interface not initialized"
- Multiple connection attempts to connect to a control module
- MVB continually freeze, even when not reading data
- Complete freezing of VCDS, forced to kill VCDS and re-open

Things I have checked:
- Uninstalled/re-installed newest version of VCDS
- WIFI signal shows to be full strength from interface. (laptop is usually in passenger seat, or in my lap in drivers seat)
- Has been tried in multiple vehicles
- Exempted all processes from C:\VCDS in Windows defender
- Tried using Options>Test. Sometimes will not connect. Sometimes will give OK, then hardly connect to control module.

I am not using the Cloud based services, as the laptop does not have internet access when out of the shop, hence the reason for using wifi mode and not infrastructure mode. I have also not tried using the cable, as the hex-net was purchased to cease direct USB connections. I only have 1 reliable USB port left!

Any ideas are greatly appreciated. If anything else is needed, please let me know. Thank you in advance!

1st scan is with infrastructure, 2nd is over wifi. Oddly enough, the scan looks good, time is great. Unfortunately does not show any of the issues I have experienced.

Can you look in Device Manager and tell us what kind of WiFi chipset your laptop uses?

-Uwe-

PS: The we call the stand-alone mode "Access Point" because the HEX-NET is being an access point.

When you use the laptop in your shop, do you have it plugged into AC power?

Windows 10 can be weird... can you check the power settings for the wifi card:

http://forums.ross-tech.com/showthr...e-Power-settings&p=60249&viewfull=1#post60249

My first impressions are that this was the key. I found that using "access point mode" now connects to the control module much faster. Also, while flipping through MVB, there is no bog-down during changes, and does not freeze. I had just tried all of this on the same vehicle shortly before making these changes, with all symptoms present.

Ill report back in a week or so after Iv read many more vehicles to determine if these issues have subsided. Once again, a huge thanks to the Ross-Tech crew for excellent support, and for making awesome products!

Yes, I know this now. Unfortunately, like many others, I went to use the laptop after having just set it down, and it was performing the update. Over the course of what seemed like the entire day with no VCDS, I was a little ticked. Now, to find it conceals little things like this to complicate my life further is a bit irritating. But, what choice do I have now? None, so Ill just deal with it :)

You can kill a W10 update just by not agreeing to the EULA statements. A friend agreed to the first statement, but when the one about agreeing to Microsoft watching what you did came up, he hit "Disagree", then the installer went back and restored his Win7 installation.

GWX Control Panel is also a great tool for checking that W10 isn't going to "sneak onto" your PC.

Well, I have still continued to have some negative experience. Yesterday, it was bad enough I knew I needed to pop back in here to see what other steps I could take. Once again, "access point" mode only. I was trying to read values from the digital radio module in a 2005 A4, and it was repeatedly so bad, I had to walk inside and get my USB VCDS to continue my diagnosis.

Are there any other likely things to check? The symptoms are still the same as originally mentioned. Thank you!

Did windows 10 update your computer recently?

I had my power settings revert back after a windows update.

My recommendation, check the power settings, change it to high performance.

Did windows 10 update your computer recently?

I had my power settings revert back after a windows update.

My recommendation, check the power settings, change it to high performance.

I double checked my wireless settings, and it was still set to high performance. Should I set everything to high performance?

Cool. I will make these changes and update again in a couple weeks. Thanks!

I changed everything to high power on battery, and updated to the newest BETA (15.7.4). I am still getting the original symptoms. Some cars work flawlessly, and others will become so bad I have to get the cable out (first world problems :) )

I have found that if I test the interface, sometimes that will allow nearly immediate (build list of CAN controllers prior to selection dialog." Then, nearly immediate connection to controller. When it works like this, and I can see how fast it can be, I am more than satisfied. It just makes it that much more irritating though when I can not look at a value block for 5 seconds without it freezing :(

If there are any other changes anyone can think of, I am happy to try anything.

Thanks!

I just noticed that my taskbar link is still linking to old VCDS. Let me work with the 16.6 beta and see what I have. Ideas are still appreciated though :)

Chad,

Can you check the driver version for that AR5B125 wireless card and do you happen to have any spare laptops with the same WiFi card type that could be swapped for process of elimination?

P.S. This isn't official ... so I didn't want to post in in our forum at first but I'll be off until Monday:

https://www.atheros-drivers.com/dow...s-chipset-with-id-70-and-Windows10-64bit.html

After internal discussion about this tread we were concerned there may be a compatibility issue of some sort causing your AP only problem ... and there were a few versions of drivers for AR5B125 based on that source. I found a reference to that website on a Microsoft forum but it clearly says Unofficial so I'm reluctant to direct a customer there.
