Hello Guys,Gals and Gurus,
I've got a 2002 Mk4 Jetta wagon with the AFP vr6 and 5 speed manual that I've owned for 3 years or so, it's been a great vehicle, it's got roughly 210,000 miles on it but it has been babied and taken very good car of. I had a lifter and cam fail on it around 195,000 miles or so and repaired that but that's basically the only trouble I've ever had with it.

Okay on to the issues and everything i've done so far, that it's having now and has really got me stumped.

About a month ago I upgraded my stereo, I purchased it from Crutchfield and it came with dash kit, harness, ant adapter, and the steering wheel control interface module.
I didn't have any issue with the install except for the steering wheel module. They sold me the "PAC SWI-CP5" but the wiring that "pac" said to use does not exist in my vehicle. They say that all their wiring info says my vehicle has CAN wiring for the wheel controls, however mine does not and they could not give me wiring color codes or any info to install it, so I decided to leave that out for now till I could talk to you guys about wiring diagrams for it. Radio install went fine and sounds great. I did remove the K wiring from the harness and taped it up. been enjoying it for several weeks with no problems, no check engine lights or anything.

Now here's where the fun starts!
Recently I had to travel out of town so I decided to Install my Valentine 1 radar detector ( which I have had installed in my vehicle before)
Well Knucklehead me pulls the fuse #32while I had the key on and engine off which, is I think for the injectors. That caused a check engine light.

So I get out my trusty VAG-COM and plug it into vehicle and it won't communicate! I'm like "WTH, it worked last time i used it on this vehicle!
so I start "googleing" and searching here on the repair forums and learn to go to the option page and test. well,K-1 short to ground.read to start unplugging modules till you get a K1 and K2 okay, well got to the instrument cluster and seems it is the reason for the short, so there is problem number 1

Well after getting the "okay" i start scanning, well still nothing from engine, as well as several other modules. problem number 2!

the modules that I can talk to,I get a "INTERNAL ROD error" with a list "RD.ROD, RM.ROD,RS.ROD,RG,ROD,RA.ROD, and I get a fault code01314- can't decode.code file not loaded! intermittent

so, I,m getting frustrated!
Question #1...What is going on with this vehicle and where do I start?
Question #2...what caused this and why did it lose its CODE FILES?
Question #3...what do I need to do to correct it?
Question #4...after I get this repaired what are the correct wires and color codes for the Steering wheel controls?

Please if anyone could help me with this I would forever be in your dept!

Thanks in advance,
Knucklehead Chris

Sounds like you have several issues here.

- Engine diagnostics go THROUGH the instrument cluster on this car, so it's no surprise that you can't talk to the engine with the instrument cluster disconnected. You could make a jumper between the two connectors that plug into the instrument cluster to get comms to the ECU temporarily, but I'm not sure what that would accomplish.

- It sounds like you have some sort of installation problem with VCDS. What version of Windows are you using? Where do you have VCDS installed? Make sure your Windows user account has full read/write access to the folder where VCDS is installed.

Well, I'm not sure but I have the software loaded on 2 different laptops and I get the same results on either one.
What is it going to take to repair or replace the cluster?

I have brand new and remanufactured clusters if it helps.........

Before you condemn the cluster, be sure to disconnect the other modules one by one trying to establish COM after you have verified VCDS is working on another K line car.

Always isolate.

Jack, I've disconnected the airbag, cluster ABS, not sure what else to disconnect, vehicle has manual climate controls, I haven't went after the door modules yet, is there an easier way to remove modules from the k line with out going to the hard to get to ones ?
How much are you talking for a cluster and what is involved in replacing it besides unplugging old one and plugging new one in?

Yup unplug the CCM.........Air bag module even unplugged may require the ground of shield if was water ingress to COM.

So:
"INTERNAL ROD error" with a list "RD.ROD, RM.ROD,RS.ROD,RG,ROD,RA.ROD, and I get a fault code01314- can't decode.code file not loaded!

That makes no sense at all, particularly not on an Mk.4 car.

The CCM will isolate the windows, since they talk on CAN as slaves vicariously.
If I had a part number off the unit I could quote, or straight up data transfer with a supplied unit by you is 350.
We include data transfer for all units we sell for free.

I get that same message and error fault code on more than one module.

okay, I've got the CCM unplugged, i have the steering wheel module unplugged and I've deleted all the VAG-COM software from my laptop and went to website and downloaded the latest version and I run the hardware test to test my cable and it comes up K1 Okay K2 okay, so i try to communicate with say the airbag module (airbag light in cluster is on now,BTW) and it tells me to turn ignition of for like 23 seconds and it counts down, then it says to turn ignition on,after that I try again to talk with airbag module, and it pops up that it cant find module and can't communicate with it. I'll back out and run the test in options and comes up with K1 short to ground!
any ideas on this?

Can you find another car to test your VCDS on?

Just to make sure that the problem is actually your car and not something with your VCDS setup itself...

Unplug all the controllers and start with the cluster only, since it is the gateway, Immo and cluster for an answering hex address word.

0x17
0x19
0x25 ( This address will only tell you in German to " Please go to address 0x17 Cluster " )

All in one.

Ok Guys, sorry, I got busy and had to walk away from the Jetta, I'm back at it so hopefully with help from you guys I can get this repaired.

Jack, what do you mean by this...Unplug all the controllers and start with the cluster only, since it is the gateway, Immo and cluster for an answering hex address word.

0x17
0x19
0x25 ( This address will only tell you in German to " Please go to address 0x17 Cluster " )

All in one.
Are you saying to unplug everything and start plugging them in one at a time and see how far I can get? and if i give you the vin # could you tell me what modules are present in my vehicle and locations of said modules?

I'm going to run an auto scan even tho it doesn't communicate and post it here.

I seem to remember someone saying that you could put a jumper wire in to bypass cluster, is this true and if so what color wires would i jump and could I be able to correct the issues I am having with the airbag module and communicate with other modules after said jumper was installed?

Have you now determined that the instrument cluster is the cause of the problem?

Well that old scan shows that you needed a firmware update for that engine controller back then and it directly affected the CAT code.

Are you able to speak with the ABS and cluster unplugged?

Seems like one of those 0x15 or 0x46 modules is bad and maybe you didn't add the ground needed when trying to COM for the airbag shield.
