B8 S5 instrument cluster replacement

Hi folks

My wife's S5 Sportback is going to have a replacement instrument cluster installed when it goes in for a service on Friday this week - it's being done under goodwill due to failing LED lighting on part of the speedometer.

I'm just wondering if there's any precautions I can take/info to give the dealer, as the firmware on the whole car has been updated way beyond what it left the factory with, and I've also coded TPMS onto the car which it didn't leave the factory with.

I'm not sure whether, as part of the install of the new cluster, they will just re-load the original firmware by connecting to the servers back in the motherland and I'll have to redo any changes, or if they can be given adequate information beforehand to ensure it's as I have it? If I literally note the long coding will this be enough to put right anything they don't do correctly on installation? I'm slightly concerned that a 'computer says no' attitude from the tech may result in the whole car being re-flashed backwards....

- Every dealership is different. I would start with a complete vehicle Auto-Scan to base line your vehicle.

- If they do change or update anything your Auto-Scan will most likely will show differences in coding, part numbers and/or software levels.
And if you have to change the coding back, your Auto-Scan will have the current values to reference.

- You can request your service writer to have the technician not to allow the vehicle do any updates. Whether the dealership honors that request or not is unknown. ;)

I have plenty of saved auto scans, so should be OK on that front. I'll run one before it goes in anyway, just so it's current.

I'm going to ask to speak to the tech doing it when I take the car in - sometimes I'm able to speak to them, other times they're on other jobs already and aren't available.

Must remember to take all 3 keys with me as well!!

I warned the tech about the retrofit coding and he did the cluster update manually to avoid the potential for any issues, but he warned me that they are more limited than they used to be on what changes they can make themselves :) Bizarrely the TPMS was operational when I picked the car up, but the coding on inspection is out (A vs B in the long coding) and in long coding helper the TPMS wasn't ticked. Changed that 'just in case' and the coding now matches the old cluster and all is still working - happy days!

Not impressed by the range of fault codes left on the car after the work was done though. The TPMS stored fault is due to the car being on the space saver and me not having stored new tyre pressures (had a wheel refurbished while it was in for service) and the key fob has now had a new battery which will hopefully deal with the 05 lower limit exceeded.

Got home and shut the car off.......'service due' flashes up :mad: they appear to have reset the 'inspection' service interval to 760 days or whatever, but the oil change one says 0 days/0 miles till due, so presume they forgot that bit! I've never used the service reset function in VCDS but it looked like there's a lot of options when I looked. Not sure if I need to select one or more option to reset it for both miles/days for oil service? It's had a 'longlife' service but I always get it serviced annually anyway.

To add insult to injury it appears the dealer techs can't reset the oil service indicator, possibly as a result of the way the dash cluster was coded on install.....

I took it back in this morning thinking it'd be a 2 minute job for them - oh no, definitely not! Wouldn't do it and they now want it for a whole day to redo the coding of the cluster using the automated method. It may also downgrade my firmware back to the factory level....

They're useless! Even doing the 'manual' method; changing the Instrument Cluster should have been very straight forward from them. The techy must have been qualified for less time than I've had this pair of slippers, as before GFF it was in the Instrument Cluster change procedure in the Workshop Manual to write down all of the service adaptation channels to transfer over. If you (or they) still had your cluster - it was still perfectly diagnostic capable - they could temporarily connect it up and read the ADP channels for service.

I wish I'd seen your request earlier, you could have ran an Auto-Scan with debug 02 before changing and eveything would have been recorded by VCDS for you. :banghead:

No worries - I've got it booked in for the 17th and worst case scenario it'll re-write all firmware back to factory level and the adaptations to enable TPMS will need repeating. I did it recently for someone, having done mine ages ago, and it was much more straightforward than I remember!

The coding of the cluster wasn't an issue it seems - just for whatever reason it's not accepting the instruction to restart the service clock for the oil change. It's not seeing any errors - I'm half tempted to try it with VCDS but I'd rather the dealer buggered it up and fixed it so a future owner doesn't suffer issues at a later date, whilst this is all being covered by a warranty claim!
