I have searched the wiki files codes for 18062 and the closest is 18061/18063. Is there any information available regarding code 18062 please?

Thanks I checked using VCDS and no faults are reported. Apparently it is intermittent and because no data seems to be available I can't carryout a checking procedure.

I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to tell us here. Maybe an Auto-Scan would shed some light on things?

It's an oil sensor I think mate, also if there's no fault codes how did you get this code?

I completed an auto scan, its on my other computer :banghead: which is why I have not loaded it up, however what I can say is this, Address 01 engine, 1 fault found 18062 please check DTC memory of instrument cluster, P1654 - 000 -- intermittent.

Freeze frame data;

RPM 2058 /min
Torque; 6.0 Nm
Speed 27 km/h [17 mph]
Load; 6.3%
Voltage 14.44V
Temperature; 25.2 degrees C
Temperature; 66.6 degrees C
Temperature; 16.2 degrees C

Unfortunately VCDS can't or I can't seem to establish which temperature reading refers to what?

Readiness; 0 0 x x x

I looked into the instruments using VCDS and this is where VCDS says that no faults are recorded, the fault code has been found using the auto scan function.

I read on the internet that others have had this fault code and one person said that the coolant temperature sensor was the cause, so I decided to get the scope out and have a look, using the Snap On Vantage Pro, snap on says;

The coolant sensor is a NTC type, the resistance decreases as temperature increases, this causes a change in signal voltage, which is interpreted by the ECM

Snap On say that it is a two pin sensor and pin 1 is the ground and pin 2 is the signal voltage. (good job their vantage pro is not polarity sensitive)

Snap On then provide a list of sensor circuit resistances to compare, all this is in the component information provided before a test is performed.

Tests. DC Voltage Test.

At the engine coolant sensor connect yellow channel lead to pin 2, and black channel to pin 1.

Key on, engine off, expected result 5V. I got [ - 2.18V] See above polarity.

I decided to start the engine and run it, as the engine was warming up the voltage did drop but once it got to about 1.5V the voltage was violently fluctuating between 1.5V and 0.5V constantly up and down. I wanted to scope it as the vantage is a scope, however I could not get a trace.

I have concluded that the temperature sensor is faulty based on the voltage fluctuations so am going to install a new sensor and retest it and see what readings I then get.

what a palaver  why didn't you just check its plausibility in MVB's ?

Is there a problem with the car ???????

The customer advises that the engine first time won't start and then afterwards it will start all the time, however I have not experienced this. MVB? anyone

It would help a little if we knew the age and model of vehicle, at least. Auto-Scan would be even better. You do know that some sensors (pressure and temperature, among others) are actually tiny micro-controllers and don't send a voltage level any more, they actually send a data-stream over a single wire LIN-bus? That may well be why the "voltage was violently fluctuating between 1.5V and 0.5V constantly up and down." You meter may have been trying to assimilate a data-stream.

Little hijack -sorry-, do you have some manufacture information on that. I have never heard of that. As far i can tell a engine temp sensor is a NTC or PTC.

(LIN-Bus)...do you have some manufacture information on that. I have never heard of that. As far i can tell a engine temp sensor is a NTC or PTC.

Read about LIN on Wikipedia. For a real example - and when you've got a bit of time - read this thread. It shows there is a sensor for the HVAC that is in fact on the front Central Electrics LIN. It incorporates a temperature sender and pressure transducer in the one housing and transmits its data via the Homelink Garage door opener to the Cent Elec Module (09). Cent Elec then transmits the pressure/temp data over CAN to the HVAC controller.

For absolutely specific data, please read the fantastic Self Study Programs (SSP) - available from here.

Just a quick update on this, changed the coolant temperature sensor, yes there are two but one is for the radiator fan as the technical data advises. The new temperature switch initially read approx 2.5V and as the engine warmed up the voltage was stabilized and as temperature increased the voltage level dropped gradually, at about 1.21V the fluctuations were back as before, the scope started producing a square wave pulse and even after switching off the engine the square wave pulse continued for a good few seconds until a relay of some sort switched and the trace flat lined.

The fault will still be present, tomorrow when I have a bit more time I'll upload the auto scan. Its made things a bit difficult not being able to carryout a checking procedure for the fault code that is present that I can't do any research on.

Why would you change anything ?! Because it's written on some forum with similar fault ?! Sometimes non start will need to be confirmed so you can chase cause of it......and in 99% of those kind of faults it's something really simple , just need to catch it. And to do so you must be organized ,not changing random parts.....

I agree fully with you, I didn't want to change the sensor but allowed myself to be mislead by someone else who thought changing the sensor cured their none starting issue. I just wished I had the checking procedure for the fault code. Auto scan to follow...

I am tempted to lock this topic, you have been asked for an Auto-Scan more than once now and you still haven't provided it. In many cases it isn't just about the fault code but more so about what other components say or what they are... Please don't waste peoples don't with incomplete inquiries, post an Auto-Scan and complete vehicle details!

Thanks for replying Jack. With regards the part # sensor replaced I am assuming that you are referring to the coolant sensor I just replaced!

Can I ask please from members that when you use abbreviations like MVB's, FOD etc, I can try and look up their meanings on the internet but there are many variations, so can I ask that members spell their meanings out please to avoid confusion and misunderstanding.
