The MIL on our 2010 Jetta Sportwagon TDi is on. Below is the portion of the scan that describes the problem that activated the MIL. Pardon the cut and paste - I did not see the usual paperclip or other symbol to attach a document. The "problem" I'm having with VCDS is in understanding the details of the information. I've looked for the answers, but have not found them. So:

1. Does "Malfunction 0010" have a specific VW meaning, or is just VCDS-speak for 'there is a problem here'?

2. Is "Mileage 78872 km" the mileage at which the fault was last encountered? Or something else?

3. What is "Date: 2010.9.11". It is obviously not the date of the last fault. Is it the date of the first fault? Or a date related to the Internal Pressure Sensor?

4. If it is the date of the first fault, why has my dealer's shop not already corrected the problem?

5. What is "Fault Status: 10100000"?

6. What is the meaning of "Ign. Timing: 0BTDC" for a diesel engine? Is it when the sensor sensed autoignition?

Finally, I infer that We have either a failing pressure sensor or a problem with its wiring. Any disagreement with that?

Thanks for whatever information you can provide.

(BTW: The Nav and Radio malfunctions are (i) they were not turned on and (ii) there is an intermittent in the antenna. The Tire Pressure malfunction is probably that the car had not been driven and the sensors were therefore not active.)

1) 0010 in that context is just the that module's status bits in the Gateway, and a 1 in the position shown means the Gateway thinks there are one or more faults in the corresponding module.

2) Mileage in freeze frame data is more likely the mileage at which the fault occurred first, not most recently.

3) Data is also more likely to be when the module first stored that fault. Of course it's dependent on your car knowing the correct date at the time it was stored.

4) Ross-Tech is not associated with VW/Audi or any dealer and thus cannot speak for them. ;)

5) It's a bunch of status bits that are already decoded into text in the line above, such as "Intermittent" or "MIL ON".

6) Degrees Before Top Dead Center.

Thanks, Uwe. All helpful, and it had not occurred that the car might not know the date!

BTW, I know what BTDC means, what I was wondering about is what was meant by "ignition" in a diesel and how it was determined. It clearly is not spark - so it must be autoignition and sensed by the Internal Pressure Sensor. Whole new concept to me.

Not sure myself. With an older diesel, I would suggest this was "commencement of injection", but with a common-rail injection system such as you have in this car, there are multiple injection events. Is this the first one, the main one, or is it determined by pressure rise? If I knew, I'd be happy to tell you. :)

The internal pressure sensor is used for a beter and smoother burn phase, the pressure sensor is located inside the glowplug. Use a torq wrench when removing and installing these. As these are not cheap and tend to break really fast
