I'm trying to setup my own "testbench" and I'm getting there. It's not done yet, but more and more ready ;)

Installed gateway, BCM, cluster, door + passanger module and infotainment 5F system.

All modules are originally from my Touran where I have upgraded some modules except for 5F that I have borrowed from a friend. In the cluster I've took out the speaker. That's is causing the error related to "Internal Control Module Memory Check Sum Error".

My problem is with 09-BCM.

I've added wires to I can "open" driver and passanger door. Rear lid is currently open and hood is closed.

I can turn on ignition - 5F unit says it's on and I can operate it without any problems. Cluster does also turn on. Measuring values in driver door also says the doors are unlocked. Should I've just buy a "safety switch for central locking" eg. 5TA962125 ?

I wonder if you've got the same issue as I have (as DV52 kindly pointed out), that you need to "wake up" the BCM with the steering column electronics module (when you "turn" the key on). Without it, the BCM stays asleep despite applying all appropriate +12V T15/T30 power inputs.

I've since dumped my initial PQ35 setup and I'm in the process of acquiring MQB modules (got some from a 2017 Golf), but I'm still lacking the steering column module, otherwise I'd gladly help!

Could be. I’m upgrading my car with a new steering column so the module 16 will be removed and be a sub module of BCM instead due to new Passat B8 facelift steering wheel.

Then I’ll have a steering column electronics module that I can use.

@diskoboy: hmm....not as I understand!! If I'm correct, I think that the steering wheel module (@ address hex16) has full CAN status on MQB platform vehicles. So it should be reported on an auto-scan as a top tier module with the same CAN hierarchy as the BCM.

I've not read anything formal from VAG to substantiate this, but from my observations, the elusive wake-up signal appears to be generated in the hex16 module and it is communicated to the BCM (and other modules, presumably) over the CAN network. I don't believe that there is any master-slave relationship between the 2 x modules.

In addition to the gateway module, you will need to simulate the multi-switch that sits behind the ignition lock for the wake-up signal to happen. The wiring loom for this multi-switch is directly connected into the hex16 module. I solved this problem by buying a new multi-switch (it's not expensive), but I believe that Ross-Tech folk cobbled together a series of "jumper wires". If you choose the RT approach, the pictures below might be useful:

VgaDXNR.png

The bottom left picture is the hex16 connector and the bottom right picture is the mating connector from the multi-switch. The upper bank of pins are electrically connected to the corresponding pin on the lower bank.

Finally, the "S" switch is a single-pole-single-throw device. It's closed when the key shaft fully enters the lock mechanism- it remains closed throughout the ignition/engine-start sequence and the switch opens only when the key is removed. I found it important to correctly mimic this dynamic for some BCM and door module functions. To do this I cannibal-ised my new multi-switch and brought-out both contacts (using wires) to a separate external switch.

In MY19 or thereabouts MQB models (Golf 7.5, Tiguan etc) introduced before that time started receiving steering wheel modules, which in autoscans appear as sub-modules of the BCM, not as a discrete CAN module at address 16.

Some examples:

I just wanted to mention this vendor ; I think is along the same lines ,so to speak, as your test bench idea.... but a bit larger. But , it may get you started and you can refine from there. Obviously, it is manufacturer specific: this fellow, it appears, purchases a entire salvage car and cuts it in half, then plugs in the modules and ECU's etc, to test them! I realize it is not bench top, but it should get you started. ?????????? I think the "car room" starts at 1:50 ish. For inspiration purposes !!!

@siLc: Very true! I might have assumed too much - it's just with all the references to "hex16", I assumed that OP's car was the traditional full-CAN version!! I can't find an auto-scan of @diskoboy car to tell which version the modules are sourced from the donor car

@stefdds: After seeing your video, I grabbed my disc grinder and fired-up my welder in preparation to visiting my local salvage yard.

But, after further thought, I realized that the video solution is far too easy; it removes all the fun of creating wiring looms for the test-bench from scratch (and figuring-out which pins to connect)!!

Plus, the video solution doesn't end-up looking like a bowl of spaghetti - which is an essential part of a functioning test-bench IMO!! ;)

Got my CANbus signal generator improved a bit. Now I'm able to fool an instrument cluster into thinking it's racing at 260 km/h, at 7.000 RPM at 9th gear, while it's actually sitting calmly on a wood bench. There are a few issues yet to be fixed though, but I'm working on it. Thanks all for the inspiration.

@Ronaldo : I'm pea-green with envy!!! Without divulging anything that you want to remain secret - can disclose more about what's behind the the knobs/switches in the black-box?

And, there appears to be wires that disappear behind the table-clamp. Other than equipment shown - is there any more stuff needed for your set-up?

I'm more than happy to disclose everything about the project if someone is interested. Circuit mounting was actually pretty simple and most of the effort was looking for documentation, sometimes sniffing CANbus traffic in a real car and figuring out how to generate valid messages, as there is no much information that I could find about some of the messages used by MQB platform.
Here is a pic of the box with the top cover open. Basically it's an Arduino Uno board with a Digistump CAN bus interface mounted on top and a MQB gateway with wires connected to all 5 buses, plus the diagnostic port connected to an OBD connector where I can plug my HEX-V2 to.

gnVuvJr.jpg

The unit is powered by a 12V external power supply (probably from an obsolete laptop computer, I'm not sure where it came from) and there is also a USB port I can use to upload code to the Arduino. The wires that come from the box are the 5 twisted pairs (identified by color) corresponding to the 5 buses and two pairs of 12V-GND to power up ECUs. In the instrument cluster test shown in the pictures I'm only using the convenience CAN bus wires and a pair of +12V-GND, there are no other devices connected to the box, but I could connect many other ECUs if needed.
There is also a switch at the lower right side of the box that isolates the gateway and connects the OBD port directly to the convenience CANbus if necessary. I'm still unsure if that's the best solution but that's how I solved the problem of avoiding conflicting messages when I want to test generating some messages that are also generated by the gateway.
Switches, buttons and pots mounted on the top cover are connected to the arduino through a bunch of wires, so I can also get some spaghetti look in my testbench. Plans include adding more controls while I still have analog and digital ports available.

@Ronaldo : Wow- Respect!!

I think you mean a MCP2515 CAN-BUS Shield by DIY MORE (I'm not aware that DIGISTUMP makes a CAN shield - but you may be correct).

Your 2nd picture answers my other question from your previous post: what happened to the CAN Gateway module? Clearly it was hidden (read "neatly located") in the black box!! So- on my MQB test-bench, the Gateway module has a T15 pin that I've powered from a relay whose coil is triggered by a signal from the BCM (following a simulated ignition key turn). Does your hex19 module not need this T15 signal?

Neat solution using the Convenience CAN switch to isolate the hex17 module! Is this switch the reason why the hex17 module isn't showing any signs of CP error in your first pic - or did you source the hex19 and hex17 modules from the same car? Or have you solved the CP error problem entirely?

Hi, Don. You're probably correct about the shield not being made by Digistump. I made tests with a few different boards and I can't remember all I tested. In this case I choose that one because it mounts on the Arduino Uno board and extends its connections so I can easily connect and disconnect wires to it without soldering/unsoldering, but other MCP2515 based, like the popular Niren shield, work perfectly. Maybe I'll eventually have to add more CANbus interfaces to the project so I can send signals to all buses according to the correct source expected by the gateway. I still didn't generate so many different messages but I'm aware of the fact that the gateway may not forward messages that come from the "wrong" bus to the others. Having a different interface for each bus would be a perfect solution, but while I still don't have it, I can always connect all modules to the same bus as a workaround.

My gateway worked normally without the T15 pin signal. It seems that the CANbus message Klemmen_Status_01 is more relevant or reliable for the module than the physical signal. The only fault I had with T15 pin disconnected was an "ignition status implausible" (or something like that) on the DTC list, but everything worked. Anyway, I eventually connected the pin to a 5 volt signal in the position corresponding to Klemme_15 in the "PWR/K S/K 15" switch (which corresponds to the "car"'s ignition switch in my box) because I wanted to eliminate the DTC and now I no longer have any faults. At first I didn't know if the right voltage for the signal would be 5v or 12v and I didn't want to risk blowing up the module with 12v, so I tried 5v first, and it woked so I didn't even tried other voltages.

Avoiding to fire a CP error on some modules was another reason for me to include the switch in the project and I planned to make all tests on the instrument cluster with the gateway disconnected, but I accidentally tested it once with the gateway on  and nothing happened (and modules are not from same car), then I didn't worry anymore about the position of the switch. I confess I don't know much on how CP works, maybe I'm just lucky, but had no problems so far.

@Ronaldo: Appropros of the T15 voltage on the hex19 module, here's an extract from the MQB WD:
oKhjVga.png

I've highlighted the relevant pin (i.e. pin#14 on the 20 x pin connector). As you can see, this pin is connected to A192 - which has the term "15a" in the description. This means T15 -which is a switched +12V signal. I'm surprised that your hex19 module accepts +5V as a substitute. A car battery with +5V voltage at its terminals would be very sick indeed!!

As for CP - it's generally not a problem on a test-bench in that modules with active CP errors can still be accessed for most normal VCDS purposes, albeit CP errors will limit normal "user" functions (like no sound on the MIB unit) . The exception for a module with CP error is the hex17 module -which will display SAFE CP on the center part of the screen (but the module features are still otherwise accessible)

CP is touted by VAG as the answer to the black market trade in stolen modules, but it has other advantages for the corporation in that it locks-in the dealer's role for changing/adding modules.

Here's a brief description (from the Golf mk7 SSP) of how CP operates:
Component protection
Component protection applies for a
variety of control units.
This is designed to prevent any unauthorised
replacement of components.
The component protection master used is the data bus
diagnostic interface J533.
Following replacement, control units with component
protection must be enabled online by FAZIT, or the
control unit will be restricted in function or will not
work at all.
A component protection comparison is usually performed
by the diagnostic interface for every terminal
15-ON cycle, and the validity of the installation is
checked.
If it is determined that a known constellation of
devices is working in the same way as during the last
driving cycle, then the control units are enabled for
regular functions.
If this is not the case for a control unit, then the
component protection is activated in this control unit,
which has an impact on its function.
And here is the accompanying CAN Network schematic for the CP constellation:

Thanks for the info! I was wondering why I didn't realize the "T15 on" signal on pin 14 was simply a connection to T15, then I checked the Audi A3 Wiring Diagrams I used as a guide, and it seems that, differently from the WD you posted, my manuals only refer to the connection as "Connection 2, in main wiring harness", with no reference to the T15, and that's why I wasn't sure about the nature of the signal.

vcwNi57.jpg

Anyway, it really wasn't supposed to accept 5V as a "1" when 12v are expected, but fortunately it worked, which made things simpler to connect in the existing circuitry of the box. If it didn't I still could use the "OFF/K S/K 15" switch because it has two poles and all I would have to do is using separate poles to switch the arduino inputs and the T15 signal for the gateway,

And thanks too for the info on CP. Up to now I didn't notice any CP related erros in the DTC record, or any apparent loss of functionality in the cluster. Speed, RPM, gear shift, engine temperature and mileage are all responding as expected. I just didn't find the codes to browse the "board computer" features yet but I hope I can do it without having to buy a MFSW. There are also a few "CP counter" data fields that can be accessed through VCDS Advanced Measuring Values, but they all seem to be set to zero. As I said before, maybe I'm just lucky, but I'll not be sure about that until I check all the features.

Hi,
i have tried the script from Ronaldo,
On my Test-Bench say's the Gateway Terminal via CAN - not available.

As Hardware use i:

Hi. There is an error in the code I posted (a lacking in a line of code) but most people figure it out when compiling and correct it by themselves. Did you install the jumper for the terminator resistor on the MCP2515 board?
