VCDS reports "Unable to find a ROD file". Whazzat mean?

Hello All:

I encountered the message shown below when using VCDS (current stable release, version 12.something) today. I have never seen such a message before. Can someone tell me what it means?

Also, what the heck is a '.ROD' file? Is ROD an acronym for something?

I have attached the Autoscan file below. The car is a model year 2014 Italian version of a Volkswagen. Subsequent to this scan, I cleared all the faults and no faults persisted. I am still trying to find the muffler controller so I can turn the noise level down.

I guess, the problem is that this car is so new, vcds doesn't have a file made for it.
Just wait and see, if geniuses of Ross-Tech can make a file for you.

I dunno - I don't think it's all that impressive - the thing has more angles than a geometry teacher, and it makes an awful racket when it is running. It converts fuel to noise with efficiency that rivals Harley-Davidson.

I need to find the muffler controller and turn the sound down.

Well, the new-fangled UDS/ODX/ASAM protocol that VWAG started using in the B8 chassis Audis in 2007 or so, and that has now become pervasive is heavily data-driven. It's not possible to do very much with such a module without a data file that describes it. ROD files are our (proprietary, much more efficient) containers for such data. The error message you posted means that the version of VCDS you're using has no data for that module.

Although HDs do that very well, they do it without making absurd amounts of horsepower as a byproduct.

Is a ROD file sort of like a replacement for a label file?

FYI I managed to get about 75% of the controllers on this car scanned at the 'debug level 2' setting this afternoon before I ran out of time to finish. I've already sent the PLB and PLA files in to the 'support' email. Are PLA and PLB files what you need to create ROD files, or do you need additional data? If you need additional data, is that something that I can suck out of the car with my VCDS application? If so, let me know and I will do that for you.

Also, I think it would be helpful to add this vehicle family to the "List of Supported Vehicle Families" within the PDF at this URL: VCDS Compatibility Charts.

No, it's not exactly a replacement. There are some similarities, but there's lower level stuff in there too. And the fact that a ROD file is needed for a particular module doesn't preclude there also being a label file for the same module.

No. However, PLA and PLB files continue to be useful for making Label files.
