Does HEX-NET support multiple ECUs via address 31?

I've had a HEX-USB+CAN interface for several years now. Address 31 support for my dual-ECU Phaeton W12 is mostly broken. Without rehashing the whole long conversation, I talked to Andy @ Ross Tech in July of last year and he did feel like it was a VCDS bug. I just tried Beta 14.2 with my HEX-USB+CAN and it seems to have gotten worse instead of better. I can open address 31, but the session breaks within a couple seconds without even taking another action.

I can certainly understand this is low demand and thus low priority, particularly when trying to ship and support the new HEX-NET.

Is address 31 expected to work on HEX-NET? If so, that will probably push me over the edge into buying one.

This doesn't Help you directly, but I was able to communicate to both ECU's of a 2008 RS4 today with vcds cloud via address 01 and 11.
I don't see many older A8l W12's come through the shop, so I won't be able to check one of those in the foreseeable future
And the newer ones are not the same platform

Yep, all the A8s W12 ECUs are do diagnostics via CAN (and the newest ones are UDS). Phaeton W12 is K-Line. VCDS with aired interface worked pretty well on them the last time we actually had one to test (which was quite a long time ago). But it's darn unlikely that the HEX-NET or VCDS-Mobile has been tested on dual ECUs (address 31) running on K-Line. We might have to look for a pair of those ECUs in order to do that...

Uwe, if Ross Tech is willing to take a look under the context of HEX-NET support I'll buy a beta unit immediately. Lansdale is a bit out of my way, but if it helps, I can set up RDP/VNC/TeamViewer on a machine plugged into the car and get you direct access for as long as you need.

Address 01 and 11 worked fine for me in VCDS 11 and 12. I had occasional stability issues (dropped sessions) but I think those were problems with the laptop I was using. I could connect to Address 31 just fine, but I could not reliably log or graph data because VCDS would randomly flip the order of returned data. Here is an example for MVB 36 which happens to make it very clear:

TIME TIME
Marker STAMP V V STAMP V V
0.01 0.125 B1-S2 OK 0.6 B2-S2 OK 0.01 0.22 B3-S2 OK 0.65 B4-S2 OK
0.19 0.125 B1-S2 OK 0.6 B2-S2 OK 0.2 0.24 B3-S2 OK 0.645 B4-S2 OK
0.41 0.265 B3-S2 OK 0.65 B4-S2 OK 0.41 0.12 B1-S2 OK 0.605 B2-S2 OK
0.63 0.12 B1-S2 OK 0.615 B2-S2 OK 0.63 0.315 B3-S2 OK 0.65 B4-S2 OK
0.85 0.125 B1-S2 OK 0.615 B2-S2 OK 0.85 0.35 B3-S2 OK 0.65 B4-S2 OK

Andy had me try Generic OBD2 and unfortunately it had some fallout too. It was brought to mind for me recently while I was troubleshooting a problem with an exhaust cam adjuster. There is no way to log or graph both banks at the same time except through Address 31.

Unfortunately, I think we're going to need physical access to the data stream between the tool and the car (or at least a pair of ECUs) to properly sort this.

How long do you think you would need access to an example car?

There are Phaeton forum members who are much closer to Lansdale than I. If you think you could put one to productive use, I could put out a call to see if someone could leave their car with you for a short while.

I completely understand if you're wrapped up in dealing with more common scenarios. :)

It's almost impossible to predict for how long. Could be a hour, could be MUCH longer, which is why I'd prefer to look for a pair of ECUs, that way they'll always be available for us to test on, just like the pair of A8 ECUs we got some years ago.

If you can spare the time to look into it, I will arrange to donate a pair of Phaeton W12 07C906018B ECUs to the effort. Yours to keep on the bench for development and regression testing. No strings attached, although I would not turn down a discount on a HEX-NET. :)

I do need to first verify this happens on the older BAP ECUs and/or the V10 TDI ECUs. I haven't yet ruled out this being unique to my BRP ECUs. I will ask around.

Cool! I think we should take this to e-mail... You should be able to figure mine out, but please be aware, I'm probably going to be away from my e-mail for much if not all of the rest of today.

PS/Edit: Look for an e-mail from Andy.
