As a recent newcomer to VCDS ownership and having had my 'Service in xxx miles' on the DIS, I've been looking at my options for doing my own Oil service and SRI reset.

I have a 3.0TDI on 'Variable life' but with reduced mileage these days I'm considering coming off 'Variable Life' and going to 'Fixed' service.

These are the fields VCDS shows when I go to SRI Reset without making changes:

Code:
VCDS Release 15.7.3: SRI Reset
Control Module Part Number: 4E0 910 950 F Labels: 4E0-910-xxx-17.lbl
Component:KOMBIINSTR. VDO H49 0200, Coding:0000418

I've consequently had a peek at the label files and the implied reset values don't seem to match recommended service intervals!

This is [an edit of] the Label file for my cluster:

Code:
; Change to fixed intervals (miles)
RJ,4,0,Change to Fixed Intervals (Miles),,ST_FIXED
RJ,4,1,45,1
RJ,4,2,42,50
RJ,4,3,43,50
RJ,4,4,44,365
RJ,4,5,49,365
;
; Change to flexible intervals (miles)
RJ,5,0,Change to Flexible Intervals (Miles),ST_DIESEL,ST_FLEXIBLE
RJ,5,1,45,2
RJ,5,2,42,90
RJ,5,3,43,190
RJ,5,4,44,730
RJ,5,5,49,730

Without fully understanding these label file options, it would appear that channels 42/43 are set to 90/190 for variable life [that is, 9000/19000 miles] and set to 50/50 for fixed [that is 5000/5000 miles]. Which mismatches my service guide which says 15000km/10000miles for fixed service intervals!

Are these label file numbers actually wrong for fixed servicing or am I misunderstanding how these work?

Thanks - Julian

No, I don't think there's a misunderstanding. I guess the question is why it's at 5,000 miles instead of 10,000. The only explanation I can think of is that in markets like the US where cars were always delivered with fixed service intervals, the FIRST service was (for a long time) at 5,000 miles, and then at every 10,000 thereafter. Someone may have read out the contents of these channels on such a car before it had its first service and we based the label file on that.

Aha

So either, since 2004 [when the label file was created],

1) All Euro A8 owners with VCDS run their A8s on 'variable life' service

or

2) They run it on fixed interval and a] ignore the fact that they get a reminder after 5000miles / 8000kms or b] they've fixed the label file but haven't told you!

Is it worth me formally requesting a 'fix' for this? ...

Regards - Julian

Since it's a plain-text label file, you can easily fix it yourself, or just put 100 in those channels directly.
