Complicated MK5 Golf Steering Angle Sensor Fault

I've removed and tested the relay for the power supply relay 2. It clicks but the continuity reading doesn't stay at 0.01. It fluctuates around 0.26/0.70/1/2 etc (does momentarily reach 0.01). The two larger prongs (87 & 30) leading out are also scored with heat marks. I'll try and get a picture up later. Is this likely the issue?

Unfortunately I can't buy a new relay until tomorrow morning.

The relay either works or it doesn't sporadically.......

Based on what you report things adapt while hot, however, after sleep time or not initiated, you drop the ADP.

Verify and monitor these switch positions and sleep mode MA drop.

Force it if you have to.

Inspect the relay's or switch's internally and output of all respective modules.

I have seen on some rare occasions, where a back feed kept a module hot during power up on the 30, and never let the 15 actually switch.

Hence, when 30 shut down all together 15 and 30 + 75 combined, you had a module that never saved its settings to eeprom. FOD?

Note:
This is often seen when working on butchered conversion car, where an application "didn't belong"......... due to peoples inability to RTFB a WD.

How can you test resistance/continuity with it powered up ? if it is powered then load testing applies.

^^^Ahh a Yorkshireman. I'm in Leeds if you fancy a go at this problem?

As you can tell, I'm well out of my depth on this one. So you're probably right.

But I am familiarising myself with this system. I've been reading the official manuals on the MK5 steering. This is my understanding:

G85 talks to SWCM
SWCM talks to CAN Gateway
CAN outputs to ABS module

Why then does CAN not show any steering angle? It is stuck at 0.00. Yet, in the ABS module and Steering Assist, the numbers move.

I have checked the wiring around CAN, Power management board, relays (only one more relay to test). All seems to be OKAY.

The Yorki is telling you that your test theories are flawed, and is barking at you through the screen door.

Time to get the WD, and the manual + take some courses on how to use a meter.

I recommend you get the SSP for this car....... so you can better get a baseline of the vehicle, further for systems & how they work!

VCDS can only display what it sees through the controller .......it is a guide; to be used in conjunction with proper test equipment, not an absolute as you imply.

Now RTFB ............ and eat your lunch.

Well it seems I may be narrowing in on the problem. Replaced the steering module for a CH one (current is AQ). Left it for two hours and the steering light didn't come on. However the tech had to take off the CH as the horn, paddles and steering buttons did not work.

The CH is LIN 1.3 and 2.0, does the coding need to be different to the AQ?

Did you manage to get a chance to recode the SWCM? I'm quite interested to see what way this fairs out as I've had a few of these issues with different vehicles ALL with different successful repairs.

Looks like it was the steering wheel control module. It's been fine and fault free for over a day (and many "testing" miles). The annoying thing is that it was the same module the previous specialist couldn't code in, so £70 lost there for no reason. Anyway, alls well that ends well. Thanks for the help everybody, especially Jack!

It seems VW made some iffy SWCMs in 2007/2008 - a couple of other threads on the internet with Golfs of the same year with the same issue:

I'm going to bump this instead of creating a new thread since there is a lot of good information and i am having a similar issue with a 2009 GLI. I have several steering angle/abs faults, and there is a known issue with 2009s abs control module. is this linked to the steering column control module or separate? i am going to replace/run an adaptation on the abs control module first but curious on your thoughts. also it looks like in 2009 the steering control module was moved to the steering rack itself, so would that require replacing the whole rack? i'll post some of my log below. i omitted the other noise since i have a lot of other stuff going on.

I've noticed something about the two autoscans that were posted. I don't see address #04 for the steering angle sensor. Is it a case where this model of the MK5 doesn't come with this version of sensor?

It has an entry in the Installation List, but it's not directly accessible.

I have an issue where I was messing around with VCDS the day I got my cable then my steering angle sensor appeared to stop working.
The symptoms that I experience is that anything related to the use of the steering angle sensor produces an error (such as ABS and ECS).

The symptoms I see is that the Address #04 is intermittently reachable, then it "disappears" and can't be contacted. This cycle repeats. When I go into the steering #16 module and look at the values for the steering angle sensor, it starts out showing legitimate vales, then it gets erratic. No hardware changes were made to the vehicle. I messed around with VCDS (the first day I got it). Even restoring all the stock values from the INITIAL auto-scan and clearing the error codes does not resolve the issue.

How can I tell if my car came with a steering angle sensor in address #04, or the other type that I'm reading so much about (for my MK5 Golf)?

I'm creating a new thread with a valid Auto scan so as not to clutter this one.

Old thread, but this was very helpful. 1K-based Seat Leon was having same symptoms, main problem being "00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G85) 014 - Defective - Intermittent". Steering assist warning light was mainly on, sometimes off for a short period and then back on. Others had been trying to repair this already, G85 sensor had been changed, and then changed again, but no help from that. They also changed slip ring.

As proposed already in this thread, wiki page for fault code 00778 could mention that in some of these 1K-based cars, G85 being defective might well be actually J527 defective, if new G85 doesn't cure the problem.

I'm happy in my case, inflating the tyres to the same pressure, and doing the basic setting, before a long test-drive resolved my issue.
