No the ribbon inside might be in place, but there are holes on a disc that runs through angle sensor. Those holes pass through light when steering is turned and that makes the steering angle positsion.

Still having doubts it being that fault. - lets see.

Hahaha, it's an actual game.

Well, they say they checked all of the wiring and went through the official VW guided fault finding and this was it. If it isn't, then I'll be getting my £230 back.

So they are doing what you asked them to, Jack.

Also gave it a wash after I specifically instructed them not to, some nice swirl marks now.

Well it wasn't the clock spring. Luckily they refunded me the money, but they damaged the leather on the steering wheel in the process.....brilliant!

I asked why they couldn't ring VW in Germany and ask for some help and they said that's not how it works anymore.

So they said the next possibility is the steering control module or a wiring fault somewhere in the car. But they can't say which one and they won't refund the money if it's the wrong one. I said isn't there a way you can pin it down, like testing the steering module...nope.

I'm going elsewhere to get it sorted.

Well I certainly wouldn't want them poking wires with a DVOM lead or back probing........

Looks like you are going to break down and get that Erwin subscription... MATE!

If I thought I stood the foggiest chance of understanding it, then I would get the Erwin subscription, Jack. VW UK said that if the dealership were struggling to understand the fault, they could've just rang the technical line for VW UK, or even the factory. Baffled as to why they didn't.

There is one definite pattern in all of this, if the lights come on above 50, no turning of the steering wheel will turn them off. However, if you dip below 50mph and speed up again, then they immediately go off.

This is my latest scan. It now shows as defective. After I cleared them, I went for a long drive and no lights came on. But I can guarantee that tomorrow morning, they'll be back on again.

Just a point of interest, is '1K0 953 549 AQ' the correct control module for my car? Most google hits relate to Skodas and Seats (well aware of their interchangeability). The steering is also coded without board computer, but I have the full length MFD.

When did you get the fault indicated in bold? I've never seen this fault in your scans.
As the steering angle is connected to SWCM and it is connected to drivetrain-can i see no faults of being offline. As you say angle sensor is replaced and also clock spring is tried, only thing i could think of is faulty SWCM that injects faulty data to CAN.

I've had this fault code before mate, a couple of pages back. It basically happens when the steering light keeps coming on and off. It eventually registers this fault, then the ESP light and tyre pressure lights stay on (steering light goes out). However, turning the car on and off again, and driving it a couple of hundred metres makes the ESP and tyre pressure lights go out.

I've had a pissed off day, but on the positive side, like you said, there are really only two options left. Either its the SWCM or the wiring.

Nope, i checked all the 5 pages. All scans are with code:
00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G85)
000 - -

This is first page with:
00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G85)
014 - Defective - Intermittent

Sounds like a terminal relay or ignition switch issue..........

Maybe no sleepy times.........

Measure MA draw to trace from BCM on Wake and verify part # of module at your respective dealer based on VIN #.

My apologies, golf_vend. I thought for sure I had or posted the 'defective' fault. Regarding the steering faults, I've cleared those and they haven't come back. Is it still possible after two weeks of no faults on the steering module?

Jack, I have to decode most of what you say...haha (mainly because of the acronyms).

So...measure the MA draw using a multimeter, from BCM? Is BCM the central electrics module? If it's showing a low draw on Wake, then it's faulty?

I have the fuse diagrams for the Golf MK5, so I'll check the relays tomorrow. It's tea (dinner) time now.

Tea time! ........LOL

I am saying to make sure things are powering down properly and relays are switching ON and OFF correctly.
No stuck open or closed....or undefined ignition switch issues.

I would run a test overlay from the G85 sir ......it isn't that hard!

Thanks for the wiring diagram, Jack. If it requires excessive removal of stuff, then I'll leave it to somebody else.

I've tested the relays in the engine bay (only 3 there) and they're all fine. All the fuses are fine as well.

I think you may be right, something isn't switching on/off. If the all of the lights come on and I switch the car on and off again, then turn the wheel lock to lock, they'll all go off after a couple of metres.

The 'defective - intermittent' fault has come back. So it's not a one off.

Okay I'll get it tomorrow (may as well get a full day out of it).

In the ABS module, when the lights come on the angle is different to that in the steering assist module; I.e., in ABS it is stuck at -7.35 and in Steering Assist it is stuck at 0.00.

Why are they not reading the same value?

You know I like to give as much info on the car as possible, so I should mention that the CV boot on the right is beginning to wear.

I've been logging the info from the car extensively today.

What I have noticed is that in Group 11 (and above) in the ABS module, on all four wheels the 'Speed encoder error' is 65535.

Is that normal?

I mentioned this briefly in my first post, but I will elaborate as it may be relevant. The previous owner stated that this fault only started happening when he changed from his winter tyres to the (wrong sized) summer tires. The tyres on the front were 225/45/18, as opposed to 225/40/18.

Are the tires approved?
What are speeds of each wss in advance measuring blocks?

Well I just brought my old man home from the hospital so I think I am not as stressed.

Now he looks like Herbert from Family Guy with his walker.
Wish I could heal people like cars.
At least a repair manual exists for cars.
AGAIN .....You must verify the terminal relays.

Sorry to hear about your dad, Jack. This is why I like cars, things can be verified and corrected (most of the time). In fact, one of the main reasons I bought this car was to get over some of my own issues.

Put into perspective, I guess it's just a car and on the whole it's very nice. BTW, Family Guy is my favourite program, but we always seem to get episodes later on here.

The WSS all read OK. I'm not sure of approved, but they are all the correct size; 225/40/18 (92Y). Goodyear Eagle F1s on the front and Bridgestone Potenzas at the back. What does the speed encoder error usually read?

What a dodo I am, I know there are more relays below the instrument panel. I even saw them when I was upgrading my CAN gateway (fault existed before this). I did think to myself, why would a car like this only have 3 relays...idiot. It's getting dark out now, so I'll have to do it tomorrow morning.

This is the testing method I'm using for the relays: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ire7vyDqelg
