The engineering problems are likely insurmountable. It would be like proposing to land a rocket booster section on a barge floating in the middle of the ocean.

I just knew those kite eating trees were going to come into the equation.

If that was his first effort commanding an r/c aircraft it was pretty good.

Usually it consists of trying to avoid the nearest planet until you get some experience..

I don't have any $25 toys, but I do have some more extensive / expensive ones.

    Left: Strictly Racing Drones SR5
    Right: ShenDrones Tweaker FPVA Edition

Both get changed around often though.....

    Here's the Tweaker loaded up:

Here's the SR5 with more current gear:

    I built a few Doinkers - 82mm 3D printed quads....

    and

And then moved those parts to a new frame:

All of these are flown FPV, so you sit and watch in goggles -

And here's a video of how I typically fly them - in case you're tired of seeing Andy land in trees:

I got a cheapy X300-1 drone from a guy at work, who imported about 12 of them, for fun :-)

Turns out, it's very sensitive to the level surface you calibrate it on, and start from.

Starting off in this vid, on a poo covered dirt pile in the paddock did NOT help with stable hovering, nor did the wind gusts:

It seems to like that tree a fair bit

The more of these I see, the more I am reminded of the old adage: "Airlpanes just wanna fly, while helicopters just wanna crash!" -- and to me these drones are a variant of helicopters.

My mate, Paul, with 3 rubbish sacks full of model plane debris would beg to differ

I prefer to think that people are doing fairly cool things with $40 toys. Performance jumps substantially when you spend $100. Then there's the whole distinction between just hovering around and actually flying.

I had all the camera and drone equipment not too long ago.
Great fun but can get expensive if you start getting serious about it.

A little clip from my home and surrounding areas.
