Hello,
Does anyone have an idea what could be going on? This car, when new, had issue of bolt coming loose of oil pump chain. Since then, even today, still running perfect, no noise, starts perfect, no trembling (besides normal for this engine)

1000 miles ago, this fault showed up, but like mentioned, engine running perfect, no noise etc. I reset fault, and showed up again, like said, 1000 miles later. I must add one thing. Roughly 4000 or more, I heard a noise coming from engine, on passenger side, as if chain tensioner was not tight (similar as when it starts, once one does oil change) This happened while driving in traffic, and making a right turn. Accelerated car lightly 2 to 3 times, and noise went away, and never heard again. Below the engine report.
Does this sensor sense, if tensioner is not tight enough? Obviously, chain did not slip or jump a tooth.

Thanks for any help.

The VIN is missing from the Auto-Scan.

000022 - Bank 1: CMP Sensor (G40) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
P0016 - 008 - Incorrect Correlation - MIL ON

Pretty much every time I've seen this fault codes, it is because of a mechanical issue of some sort. But the ECM doesn't know where/why this is happening, all it knows is the cam timing is out of spec.

It could be the a problem with the valves that control cams, the N205 and N318. Ohm test them at room temp, should be 10 to 13 ohms. See if you can swap them around and see if the fault code changes.

Could be a chain issue, but you'll have to do a hands on inspection.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your quick reply. About Vin, yes I took it out because I had post else where, and did not know if a good idea. anyway WVWCU73C86P166850

In regards to the N205 and N318, can they just be swapped around? When you mention chain issue, what would be the hands inspection you recommend?

Thanks again for your help,
Nic

Or underlining oil pressure volume issue from possible sludge or bad PSI valve control causing a lubrication/mechanical issue...........

wouldn't that or couldn't that also trigger another fault, concerning oil pressure?

Not always and most of the time not.........see an oil system can have monitored PSI,......... however, at the same time have insufficient volume.

In your opinion where would you start? As I mentioned, engine is running great, do you think I'm pushing my luck with a chain slip and bending valves, if I drive car normal, till I figure out what is really going on?

You should not drive car.........

There are many things that can cause such a DTC....

Stretched or jumped chain.......oil PSI/volume incorrect, or an adjuster keyway/pin that is sheared......plugged oil micro screen or oil filter/sump pickup from FOD.

Sometimes the air gap is incorrect on G40 or G28 if installed incorrectly.

In rare cases I have seen a plugged CAT cause a correlation issue, however, it is usually accompanied by a not so great running engine with misfire.

Run tests as per the repair manual and check static settings of timing chain + oil Pressure tests.

Start with verifying the sensors first.............

Is there anyway you can help me or quide me through these tests? I do have the Bentley manual, and the VCDS program, but as I do this as a hobby, I really don't know where nor how to start.

Thanks for your time

If you don't have the tools and equipment, or experience; I make it a policy to refer the car to a professional shop, or if you like........ you can pay for tech support with RT directly.

If you have specific questions you don't understand about a test procedure...... as described in the manual, than ask that by all means.

I do have lots of mechanical experience, and lots of tools, I don't take any of my 5 VW's to shops, all home fixed and adjusted. Who is RT? "you can pay for tech support with RT directly"?

Thanks for your help

For this type of code, IMHO, not worth it because VCDS, or rather the ECM, can not pin point the cause of the P0016 DTC. From the ECMs point of view, the crank is at [XYZ] location, thus the cam should be at [ABC] location, but it is not... the correlation between the two are out of factory design. The ECM is seeing the end result of the problem, not the cause.

If this is an oil pressure issue, it can be gosh darn impossible to pin point... oil pressure is generally checked at the bottom side of the engine, where it may be great. But your cams are using oil pressure in the cylinder head.... there is no test for oil pressure for the cam adjusters.

As for the valves for the cam adjusters, you can ohm tested as I noted, and you can also do an Output Test and verify they *click*... but this doesn't prove 100% they are mechanically working to factory design.... there could be sludge or crap in the valve so it only opens up 60%.

Swapping the N205 and N318 valves around is easier said than done. There is a timing chain cover you have to remove to access the screws that secure them into place.

For giggles, you should be able to swap the G40 and G163 sensors around, I believe they are the same part number. Looks like each is held in place by a single screw.

As for listing the VIN, it is best to have it. No one is going to steal your car based on the VIN... tow trucks don't need stinkin' VINs. :p

Thanks Jef,
Like always appreciate it greatly. In your opinion, as fault light only turns on after roughly 800 miles, if I swap sensors around to start checking, do you actually think, im running danger of chain skipping and self destruct engine? :)) Im alomost 99.99% sure, chanin has not= skipped, nor do I have oil pump bolt issue. Engine, I guess the older it gets, the smoother it runs, at least this one :)

Thanks for your input and help,
Nic

I would say that there is absolutely a way to check oil PSI/volume on the head.

I do it two ways.........I drill out a ball valve on the head ( oil gallery casting ) and convert to gage, or drill and tap the upper rear chain tensioner, so I can read PSI through the Banjo bolt directly.

So the answer to your question is yes it can be done, and Jef is correct this procedure is not in the stupid manual............but it should be!

When the chains stretch or skip they often skip retarded and run smoother.........

I would swap those cam sensors and yes they are the same.

You got me thinking there, sounds like a good idea. Let me look and some drawings, and at engine to figure out exactly where you mean. Dont want o ask you too many questions :))
Thanks

I just cant get over this question, If chain could be streched, or skipped, or low oil pressure or volume, why does it take fault code to appear after almost 800 miles of driving, and no noise from motor or rough, or hard starting is noted?
