MQB (Mk7 Golf) Steering Angle Sensor (G85) Calibration in 44 - Steering Assist

We've had some customer inquiries about this so I was able to induce a fault in my 2015 GTI in 44-Steering Assist and was able to clear it using the following steps.

First, here is the fault in question:

So first with the engine running, I went into Adv Meas Values and made sure that the steering wheel was pointed straight and the front wheels were pointed straight, close enough:

Next, I went into Security Access -16 and entered the code that shows up in the little helper balloon and it was accepted.

Next, I went into Basic Settings - 04 and chose "Steering angle sensor" and clicked [Go!]

Here's the weird part, it showed "Running" but never changed from that. I left it in this mode for 60 seconds then clicked on [Stop] and [Done, Go Back] and [Close Controller, Go Back].

Next, I cycled the ignition off and back on again. At this point, the TPMS, steering wheel, and ESP lights were still lit up on the dash but a brief drive through a parking lot made them all go away.

Excellent, C?ID=211236 confirmed the procedure worked for his replaced steering rack. But I typed too soon, he has some end stop faults. I will update as he tests more.

Start the car up, make sure that wheels and steering wheel is perfectly straight, go to 44, login, select basic setting of steering angle, then when it's saying "running" slowly turn the steering wheel all way to left, then slowly to the right, turn it back to straight. It should now show "Basic setting OK". Your G85 is now calibrated properly and end-stops faults should go away, if not do the same procedure but choose "learning end stops" in basic setting.

Thank you, I tried the first step under "steering angle", but then it made me have 4 new faults and my dash lit up with TPMS, ESC, Steering warning lamps that did not clear driving around the parking lot. I lost the active return function, steering felt really weird. I pulled back into parking lot, did the steering angle sensor reset again (no turning of the wheel) and that cleared the dash warning lights that were on and put my steering back to feeling normal, but it didn't clear the end stop fault... it came back. Just to confirm, when you say "learning end stops", you mean "software end stops"? Also, the status never changed from "running" to "Basic Setting Ok". I SINCERELY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP!

Yes I meaned the "software end stops". Also when you will be turning the wheel, hold the wheel until dash beeps or for about 2 sec. in both left and right end positions.

I believe automech has more experience than we do on the subject (we failed to truly break Andy's 2015 GTI) but these are notes from my most recent phone ticket on a crashed 2015 A3:

037224 - Steering angle sensor mechanical failure in 03 - ABS.

SA code 19249 = Adaptation/Basic Setting Enabling was needed for each basic setting attempt but you can only login once per diagnostic session (or it will error).

The somewhat successful run involved #44 > Adv MVB

[*IDE04448-IDE00924*],067,Steering angle sensor; angle - Steering angle,LINEAR,¡ã

to get it centered but he also checked some with descriptions like

[*IDE02216-IDE05795*],019,Steering angle sensor; basic setting - End basic setting,TT,

Which reported Not permitted. We selected SA > BS

[*IDE06133-*],4,Software end-stop reset,HEXBYTES,

which finished correctly and had to exit entirely because the next SA is refused. After another reconnect to 44 we got BS

[*MAS00815-*],5,Steering angle sensor,HEXBYTES,

to say Running and used [Stop] but he still had the ABS fault after a engine restart and lock-to-lock.

He will test drive it at this point and call back if needed. 5Q0-909-144.lbl and something like EV_SteerAssisMQB_AU37.TOD per our last internal DS

That may or may not help here but he didn't call or e-mail back so I believe the test drive sorted it. It was unknown if the rack was original or replaced in this case.

I'm not quite sure if any Ross tech employees found a solution. I took it to a shop and they didn't even know how to do it with VCDS.

So I've been waiting for several months to see if anything was ever posted about the correct steps to take. I've taken my car to two VW specialist centers with VCDS and neither of them knew what to do to clear steering end stops fault. I still have it. Any updates Andy?

We haven't verified this on a car yet but this should be what ODIS is doing when it runs the G85 calibration, but in VCDS terms:

1) Test step: Edge detection

Start the engine
Point the front wheels straight ahead
[44-Steering Assist]
[Security Access - 16]
Enter 19249
[Do It!]

Select these in [Adv Meas Values]:
[IDE04510-MAS03732] Steering angle sensor: slope detection index - Steering angle speed negative dropping slope on curve
[IDE04510-MAS03733] Steering angle sensor: slope detection index - Steering angle speed negative rising slope on curve
[IDE04510-MAS03734] Steering angle sensor: slope detection index - Steering angle speed positive dropping slope on curve
[IDE04510-MAS03735] Steering angle sensor: slope detection index - Steering angle speed positive rising slope on curve
[IDE04510-MAS03736]Steering angle sensor: slope detection index - Index mark

Slowly turn the steering wheel to the right and left, passing the index mark (approx. 45°) until all 4 slope detection indexes have been recognised (detected) and the index mark is set to (1).
[Done, Go Back]

2) Test step: Steer. angle sens. calibration

[Basic Settings - 04]
[Show Measuring Data]
Select the following items:
[IDE02216-IDE05795] Steering angle sensor: basic setting - End basic setting
[IDE02216-MAS03161] Steering angle sensor: basic setting - Start

In Basic Settings, pick [MAS00815] Steering angle sensor
[Go!]
It should show Running


- Turn the steering wheel slowly to the right and then to the left mechanical stop.
- Turn the steering wheel back to the mid position, the status should be indicated as Permitted. (IDE02216-MAS03161 or IDE02216-IDE05795 ?)

Note: in a test on the car it never showed permitted in either of those?

(after one or both show permitted, stop moving wheel and point straight)
Wait for it to show Finished correctly?
[Stop]

Note: in a test on the car there were no faults and no warning lamps.

3) Test step: Evaluation of basic setting (no VCDS needed)

Turn the steering wheel to the right end stop.
Turn the steering wheel to the left end stop.
Turn the steering back to its center position.
Check the yellow fault lamp on the dash.
The fault lamp on the dash must go out.
Stop the engine.
Check and clear DTCs

this baloon does not show up when i hover over it in vcds,so i dont know what the security access code is???????????

When doing the Basic Settings [MAS00815] Steering angle sensor, did it ever go to "Finished Correctly"?

We have been testing this test plan last night and this morning on different vehicles within the Ross-Tech fleet, but these have all been vehicles in proper working order.

The Cliff Notes version of what we are doing:

Engine at idle.
[44-Steering Assist]
Rotate steering wheel 90deg left then center, 90deg right then center so steering wheel is level, front wheels pointed straight ahead.
[Security Access - 16]
Enter 19249
[Basic Settings - 04]
In Basic Settings, pick [MAS00815] Steering angle sensor
[Go!]
Rotate steering wheel all the way to the left, hold firmly against end stop for 5 seconds.
Rotate steering wheel all the way to the right, hold firmly against end stop for 5 seconds.
Center steering wheel, front wheel straight ahead.
Note: our testing of this would still be "Running", never got a message of "Finished Correctly"
[Stop]
Now a bunch of error messages and warnings will appear on the cluster, what messages you get can vary based on how the vehicles is equipped.
[Done, Go Back]
Rotate steering wheel all the way to the left, hold firmly against end stop for 5 seconds.
Rotate steering wheel all the way to the right, hold firmly against end stop for 5 seconds.
Center steering wheel, front wheel straight ahead.
Now most warning messaged in instrument cluster should be removed.
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]
Cycle the ignition off for 10 seconds.
Several other control modules will flag DTCs, "Databus" type codes that can now be cleared out.

Again, we are doing this on vehicles that had no fault codes to begin with.
