I recently upgraded to an RNS510. All is working fine except maps are out of date.

Can someone advise if I will need to upgrade my firmware and can I even upgrade my firmware if I have an old unit please.

Snapshot of radio codes.

Thanks.

I have last year's maps (7963) and same firmware, if you want a datapoint:
Code:
Address 56: Radio (J0506) Labels: None
   Part No SW: 3C0 035 684 C HW: 3C0 035 684
   Component: RNS-MID H17 1140
   Revision: AB001001 Serial number: VWZ6Z7H9284042
   Coding: 080004000400000300

Looks like your hardware P/N is a bit newer than mine, but I'm not aware of a newer firmware being available for mine.

Thanks for the input. I am unable to use the "press and hold setup" to access the radio codes and I was told that it is because I have old firmware and that 2015 maps may not work and later firmware could degrade my unit.

I do need some handholding please. I cannot see where the 7963 code is shown? The system Nav maps from Dana references this to North America 6M. But in the System Nav Maps, 3C0-035 are not shown at all. Only3C0 for Europe. What am I missing or is it just that the table needs updating as Dana states?

Maps do come with firmware anyway so I can try and see. Now to find some reasonably priced maps.

RNS 510 maps don't come with firmware. You're thinking RNS-E. Press and hold setup won't work until you activate test mode via VCDS, adaptation channel 50. The one thing you were told correct is that a newer firmware could brick your unit if it's not recent enough. Seeing how yours is only a 'A' I wouldn't risk it unless you have documentation that whatever new firmware you find is compatible. I guess we should look for those v10M maps as well :)

Thanks Eric. I will just go with the V10 maps then. Hopefully these should install without the need for firmware upgrade? If have 2014 maps in an older unit I should be ok.

1140 firmware is the highest available for an "A"

You have firmware 1140. A version is pretty old :)
You'll need the test menu to see your map version.

Eric, I believe you, but how do I find that out from what I posted? I can't see 1140 anywhere.

Any idea where I can source older map version 7963 to at .east update from Stonehenge version without a firmware upgrade

It's right there in bold :)
I should be able to tell you shortly if V10 maps are working on my unit and consequently yours. I expect they will.

Duh! Thanks. Now I feel a dick.

I hope they do. It will be easier for me to find V10 probably.

The current maps are backwards compatible to older firmware versions. While older versions did not contain the new database type for points of interest, the newer map versions contain both (hence supporting old and new firmware).

Well I didn't do it in the most orthodox of ways, but I can confirm it's compatible ;)

Only because you haven't seen some of the stupid stuff I've overlooked over the years while programming

Eric, or others, how long should it take to install new maps?

I install the cd, get a simple message then nothing seems to happen. I was told it could take up to 50 mins and not to turn off the car. Is this true?

If your DVD drive is bad, like mine, infinity. I had to pull the HDD to copy the maps directly to it from a PC :)
Otherwise (if your DVD drive reads) you should first get a message asking if you want to use the new maps, and then another one asking if you want to save them to HDD. Once you click on that, the process starts, and shortly after you can get a progress bar by clicking the eject button. IT will not eject and interrupt the process unless you confirm on the screen. 30-50 minutes sounds about right.

Hmmmm. Maybe in my quest to be a skinflint I have bought a dud. The guy I bought the CDs from was spot on matching the information you shared- don't upgrade the firmware. I know I bought a copy, but that is the risk. I first installed VIM, no problem.

He said when I install the CD I will get one or 2 screen messages and it will take time to load. During this time drive the car otherwise the radio will shut down.

When I install the cd, I hear it read, I get a message saying cd reading, more whirring, some disk activity, but no messages. Unfortunately my drive times have been no more than 30 mins.

I think I need to drive 50 mins before I cry foul.

You don't need to drive the car to keep updating. The RNS will shut down after a while but if the update wasn't completed by the time, it will continue during your next drive cycle. Just keep in in there for a few drives. It will also tell you if it isn't done when you press the eject button.
