Steering wheel retrofit fail

Hi,

I originally posted on the new member forum, but as I am a fully fledged owner (2 days) of a VCDS Hex-CAN, I can post my problem here in details.

I own a 2012 VW Tiguan 2.0 TDS. As it is the basic S model I decided to fit an multi function steering wheel. After research, I realised that I must upgrade my steering wheel module (clock spring) as well as harness. So, I went from 5K0953569F to 5K0953569T.

However, when I install the new module, nothing happens. The car is completely dead. When I put in the key and turn the ignition on, the dashboard lights are dead and the car will not start. Completely dead. I cannot communicate to the VCDS, the communication link is dead. If I quickly swap back, all is OK again and again, so I know there is nothing wrong with the connectors. I believe the module is DOA but the seller says it is me.

It was suggested that the CANBus is faulty. I have a full scan which is shown below. Hopefully someone can advise if I am doing something wrong, the car modules are wrong/faulty or the new module is indeed dead on arrival.

Grateful for help. The old module is back on, but I left the new steering wheel in place, hence the airbag errors.

Looking through some of the site threads I do notice dome things I also need to address but not sure how.

Fuel pump error under #9 and an issue with communication between gateway and navigation module. I am not really sure what I need to do here but think I need to enable something in my gateway. I have replaced my old RCD350 with an RNS510. Straight swap with absolutely no issues with using it. nav works but maps out of date.

Lets try again. Removed and re-seated fuel pump relay. Added navigation check in gateway list. Cleared DTC's and rescanned. Hopefully this should be easier to help determine my problem why new clock spring kills my car.

Flying blind here and I would appreciate some help from others better qualified.

I checked my #19 extended options under adaptions. I can gateway extender is set to 0. If I try to change this to 1 and test, it defaults back to zero.

It was suggested that it needs to be set to 1 to accept my new steering wheel module 5K0953569T. When this is installed, it kills the car.

I suspect the controller is faulty if it won't even communicate directly but it is entirely possible that the incompatibility issue is the actual problem. So, I can't comment on the possibility that it was DOA but I think we agree that it won't work in this vehicle.

Dana, thanks for also confirming. It is definitely has symptoms but for one or two reasons, either of which necessitate the correct version being installed to get it to communicate. What version is AL? I presume H or L will definitely work in a Tiguan as it is basically a Golf??

Hmmm. Ok decided to order L version to be safe.

It would be useful if the list of steering wheel modules was updated to show what vehicles are supported. I used this list to order my T version as it was highline and supported MFSW. I was unaware it only supported Passat and that was because of the different ignition systems. There is a lot of people interested in steering wheel upgrades and reading across the forums they usually get there eventually by trial and error like me.

If the list could show model and year it will save time and money.

Anybody want to buy a new 5K0953569T module?

The new module was fitted yesterday. Success, but also some issues. Every button on the steering wheel works, which is a massive step from before, but I have a Christmas tree dashboard and the lights will not clear. I have driven the car and performed 360 degree circles many times, but I am left with the following errors.

Stability control error, steering wheel error, tyre pressure error and more importantly, the steering wheel is heavy so I am not getting the assist. The cruise control works but the MFD right stalk doesn't control the MFD.

Two things to note.One, I didn't change the stalk that came with the module. I figured if I already had a stalk with MFD and cruise control, then there is no point; two, I cant get the CANBUS extender to work #17 in gateway module. I couldn't before either, but I still had full steering functionality.

Here is a scan. The scan is after a reset and a drive.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge can help me please.

So something you may not have realized....When you order a specific VW/AUDI part, and it is a control module containing software, the part number is listed based on its software and what that software covers. If you look at your latest autoscan you will notice "Part No SW: 1K5 953 501 S HW: 5K0 953 569 L". This means you have the hardware 5K0953569L but the software within it is 1K5953501S. The hardware may support your vehicle, but the software within the control module may not. According to VW's parts catalog, your year had several variants of clockspring covering different features. One variant ended in F. Another variant ended in L. The replacement for either of those was a variant ending in H meaning H is a type of "one covers all" module. The supersession of the H module is the AL module. You actually bought 1K5953501S instead of buying 5k0953569L. It just uses the 569L's hardware. To be safe, I would have purchased the H module or the AL.

Mrclopec, I certainly didn't realise that. I just went on advice given to me as I have no understanding on the interoperability of software and modules. I wouldn't have bought the T version either if I had known it was for a Passat. How does one get ythis knowledge or a link to the information?

Saying that, I did some more diagnosis on my problem.Ignore my previous post. Well most of it. I followed the RT WIKI advice on how to reset G85 sensor and the steering lock. And I used the long code helper in the SWCM to activate the computer for wiper stalk. Everything is working as it should but I have 1 dashboard error for tyre pressure and 2 in modules. Software/hardware related maybe. Darned if I am going to spend more money on modules though. I have spent enough and I have more spares than VW.

is there anything I can do regarding updating the software?

I absolutely agree with Mrclopec. The original controller would supersede to a higher-line part number a majority of the time. This applies to numerous controllers but BCMs and SWCMs are most common when retrofitting in Mk6 based Golf platform vehicles.

Well it looks like I am the silly boy for not heeding the advice to get a H or AL. Ignorance thinking that as a L is compatible, then it would suffice, compounded with the fact I could not find a reasonably prices H or AL resulted in an L version.

So, to make the best of a badly executed project, here is the latest status.

Yesterday I re coded the SWCM. My long code helper showed my that my stalk was not active, so I changed from 110A140000 to 510A140000. This removed the fault code from my SWCM and enabled MFD on my stalk.

I just had a quick play with my code helper but I could not find what options would result in 198A140000 so I have left that for the moment. I don't have the other 2 options listed in the options.

I did remove address 65 from my gateway and my TPMS fault disappeared. Thank you!

I still have convenience module 46 and 4C as modules even though they are not selected in the gateway installation.

So this is my latest scan.

Just to be clear, my outstanding task is therefore to code the new controller to 198A140000 which should resolve the Engine controller (Powertrain) conflict resulting in 049682/U0212 - Steering Column Control Module.

These need to be added to the 19-CAN Gateway [Installation List] :

Next, you should add the missing Auto trans ignition lock and traditional ignition switch to the #16 coding.

198A140000 would be the typical configuration for a car with a 12 button MFSW born without a MF stalk.

You may want to experiment with 598A140000 if the factory MF stalk is still installed... but I don't know if the presence of that stalk and 12 button MFSW will cause a conflict/fault codes.

Either way - try both, clear codes, cycle the ignition and check functionality with each config.

I enabled 46 and 4C. Although I cannot communicate with the modules, the fault codes have been removed.

I did have issues with the SWCM, but I think I have resolved.

598A140000 did not work. Error code 31 - input out of range.

590A140000 did not work. Error code 31.

518A140000 did work. So it didn't like the auto ignition lock.

I still have nav errors, but nothing I can do about that I don't think as it is antenna related.

Ahh, those are virtual so they don't speak directly but need to be in the list for internal communication reasons.

Side note. Now that you mentioned the ign lock coding bit.. we received (retrofitting) email feedback from a RoW market forum user not long ago indicating something similar. golfi_vend tends to take his observations to forum and Eddie-NL and I haven't spoke via email for a long time. So, I don't think that made it here

Thanks very much for your help. I am happy. I did notice though that since I coded the SWCM, although the error codes have gone, the left and right buttons on the right side of the steering wheel no longer work. Not really sure what they do on the MFD, but they 100% did something,now they don't.

OK, I sorta figured there would be a conflict but it may be worth living with it rather than putting a non MFA stalk on the car. I doubt you are missing out on anything, the buttons on the right primarily control the MFA stuff that you can access through the stalk.

Edit, after I clicked save I thought to myself ... you probably want ALL of the fancy new buttons to do something

That's the point of this right. See if 118A140000 kills the MFA stalk and enables the buttons. Even if you have an incorrectly coded DTC that may be something to live with providing all other basic functions continue to work.
