Hi folks

Just acquired a genuine cable and run my first scan with it on my 2002 D2 S8. The firmware and software were updated to the latest versions before running it. For some reason the scan hangs on module 77 for telephone. My car has retrofitted RNS-E, with matching OEM bluetooth and hybrid TV tuner.

My scan result below:

Any reason why it should fail? I've checked a log file from an older scan a friend did for me and previously I've got the following result for module 77, in case that helps:

Code:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 77: Telephone Labels: 8P0-862-335.lbl

Can't seem to see any reference to the hybrid TV tuner in there either - it skips over the TV module, but I'm guessing because it's all retrofitted it might be looking in the 'wrong' place for it as it's configured for the older RNS-D based analogue tuner?

Happy days :)

Any functional issues with the telephone module? It's possible the module itself has become dodgy.

Did you buy your genuine cable 2nd hand?

Does it fail consistently? I.e. what happens if you just do [Select] -> [77-Telphone] ?

Hiya

It doesn't access it then either - it connects and fills some of the black text description at the top and then hangs. It's locked in the garage now but if there's anything I can try I'm all ears!

Cheers

[Options] -> Set Debug Level to 1024
[Apply]
[Select]
[77-Telephone]
Wait for it to "hang". Try to exit gracefully, but if that's not possible, do what you need to exit.

Look in the Debug sub-folder, typically C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Debug\ for a file named Debug77.dlm. Send it to Support@... and include a link to this thread.

No promises that this will get us anywhere, but it's worth trying.

OK, managed to try this earlier on - left the module sitting there for a lot longer without me attempting to force the issue and eventually it finished the auto scan.

Logged into module 77 directly and again it took quite a while to access it (over a minute) but it seems that having done so once it is now able to access it quicker if I go fully out of it and then back in.

Will try it again the next time I have a chance, but might be that it's resolved itself? No debug file generated :)

We've seen these issues about 10 years ago when the first came out and were factory installed in the B6 or B7 A4s, at the time some workarounds were added to VCDS, but I honestly don't remember the details. Maybe Uwe and/or Eric do? :)

I tried an auto scan again today and it was back to taking ages to first access module 77. Took about a minute, maybe longer, before the module boxes filled with green text and it confirmed no stored faults.

Moving this to Product Support now that Adrian is a Verified User.

I do have a fuzzy recollection of these modules being a total PITA but I don't remember what the exact issue was. Do make us a debug file at some point please.

Hiya

Thanks :)

I did look in the debug folder and there wasn't anything showing? Is there a process to generate one, or does it need to fall over completely before one is generated?

Cheers

I explained the process in Post #6 of this thread. ;)

It does not need to fail in any way to generate the file.

The debug folder is empty apart from a 'readme' text file saying to ignore the folder contents. Thought it might have hidden files, but changed that and nothing else shows up....

Then you did something wrong. Perhaps you closed VCDS between setting the debug level and accessing the module? Debug level does not persist once VCDS is closed. Perhaps you have more than one version of VCDS installed and are looking in the wrong tree?

I probably did in that case - I assumed once generated a log file would be accessible after disconnecting from the car. I will have another go on Wednesday when I'm using the car next.

Thanks

The files is saved "forever", but I think Uwe meant that you probably did put in the 1024 debug option, closed VCDS (which reset the debug option) and did the scan ?

Not sure what I did, but repeated it now and derived a debug file :) it's quite a bit bigger than the 2-3kb ones that work fine lol

E-mail sent to support

Thanks all

Yeah, that debug file isn't pretty at all. Looks like some sort of race condition triggered by the module being really stupidly slow. I'll see if I can think of something to fix this without breaking everything else :)

This took me way longer than it should have but I think I understand what's happening and have a fix for it. Is the hotmail.com address we have on file for you good to send you a link to a test build?
