New user - old problems

Hi Guys... I recently bought VAG-COM bc I am the original owner of a 2005 A6Q 3.2L and I realized that there are issues that I was charged BIG MONEY to fix over the years by the original steal-ership where I bought it. Subsequent owners have been great, but sometimes treat my issues with a "well, just get a new vehicle." No can do...

My questions pertain to the AutoScan results. I have always said that there was an issue with this vehicle from the time that I bought it. There was hesitation off the line, fuel economy issues, and then we have been in failing sensor land for an eternity. Throttle body cleanings and resets, brake lights failing to poor grounds... you name it... everything that litters these forums across the NET. I love my vehicle, but driving blindly while these things are ongoing makes me crazy. I am greeted to a symphony of beeps and lights when I start my vehicle.

Question 1: I looked at the results of my autoscan and found that there were codes with the engine Intake Manifold Tuning Valve (Bank 1) P2070-006 Stuck open dating back to 2004.10.05 with an extremely high frequency according to Freeze Frame. Similar date for another Fault Priority 2 issue P1653 regarding ABS controller. I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW IN SEPTEMBER 2005!!! Can I rely on this date and the information about similar logs?

Question 2: Is there a way to send a code through VAG COM to activate "Stuck Open" and "Stuck Closed" valves to diagnose things further? I thought I read that this could be done through Output Testing... (not even a clue how to go about that...)

I guess this is a start as I have pages of issues that have plagued me... I just replaced a sensor in my steering column which required the whole column to be changed at a nice price of $2300 after the Arctic Blast in January which has prompted me to get more serious about this. I am not technoplaegic, but know enough to be dangerous. I am not a mechanic though I am a disabled vet and was a machinist in the Navy, so I get some of this stuff.

Any feedback would be helpful. I love this vehicle and know it might be time to take it out back and shoot it, but I am a financial advisor and i have to practice what I preach in that it is paid for and a huge new car payment is not what I can do ( courtesy of a lunatic ex-wife) right now.

- If you could provide us with the Auto-Scan, that would be helpful. The date/time found in the fault code freeze frame data in many controllers is not correct, so no I would not rely on this to be correct.

- The Ross-Tech wiki is an excellent source to use when seeking information about a particular fault code, such as the P2070 or the P1653.

Question 2: Is there a way to send a code through VAG COM to activate "Stuck Open" and "Stuck Closed" valves to diagnose things further? I thought I read that this could be done through Output Testing... (not even a clue how to go about that...)

- You can use Output Test to command a controller to perform a predetermined list of output functions. For the Engine controller it will be necessary to have the key-on and the engine-off. If you wish to run the Output Test again, it will be necessary to start the engine, turn the key off and then back on with the engine-off.

DrPeter... thanks for the prompt response... I have the software on my netbook laptop and not on this laptop so I will have to get the PrintOut or do a new scan... The car is in the shop right now (imagine that) getting a new trunk sensor/latch replaced... once I get it back, I will post here... Best, Ron

Let me answer question with a question: Is the date in the car's MMI system set correctly? Or does the car think it's currently 2004?

Please do post up a real scan showing the exact fault codes.

That's an interesting question.... how would I find out about what the MMI system is thinking? Can you give me directions on how to find out.

UPDATE... got my car back from the dealership, now my LED license Plate lights do not work, nor do my reverse lights since they ran THEIR scan... this is getting to a point of pure frustration.... also, having changed my steering column for $2300, why is there a steering column error showing now? UGH...

I have read the there are ways to turn off license plate light error from new LED install by modifying something regarding PWM, but don't know how to get there...

They probably SVM'd the car and thereby restored all codings and such to the original, as it left the factory values. Do you have an Auto-Scan from before you took it in?

The only steering column related fault I see is in Address 07: Control Head and it's flagged "Intermittent". I'd clear that one and not worry about it unless it comes back.

Uwe... I think I have a scan from a while ago... before the car went in... I am really interested in learning how to best use my VAG COM... also, I tried to check my "hidden MMI screen" and I cannot get in by holding down the car and setup buttons simultaneously...

Oh, how do I clear that individual code for the steering column?
