This thread explains the configuration process of replacement Front Door control modules for most 2005 through 2007 (1K) chassis VW Golf and Jetta NAR (US/Canadian market) models.

What's the problem?

When these cars were originally made, they used door controllers (the window motor assembly with a control module to handle things like mirrors and locks) with the CAN protocol. When the cars were facelifted for the Mk6 generation, the old CAN modules were replaced by UDS ones. Unfortunately, VW no longer sells the old CAN ones and instead only sells the new UDS ones that won't work without also replacing the CAN Gateway with a newer one that handles UDS.

Additional technical jargon

2nd and 3rd Generation Front Door control modules (Diagnostic Address Words 42 and 52) used the CAN Protocol. The latest 4th Generation Front door modules use the UDS Protocol.

What's the difference?

When 4th Generation UDS Protocol Front door modules are sold and installed as direct replacements they may not communicate diagnostically until the 19-CAN Gateway is replaced. Furthermore, the Left Front (#42) in addition to the Right Front (#52) modules should be replaced as a matching pair to prevent one touch up/down window problems in addition to rear door communication issues. The new Front UDS protocol units show the rear doors as sub system slaves rather than traditional address words 62 and 72 as found from production.
VW Parts Bulletin Group 9, number 130 may add some clarity if your local VW Dealer parts department can obtain a copy.
VW TPI 2035718 -or- TSB 64-14-01 also applies but it directs you to ETKA for the above parts bulletin and ODIS for coding.

How do I configure the new modules?

The following Replacement Steps apply when all 3 control modules need to be replaced:

1) The New 19-CAN Gateway (J533) needs to be configured.
  1. Code the new 3 Byte 7N0 series part number 19: CAN Gateway using the [Long Coding Helper]. Make sure to use non-zero WSC/Importer/Equipment numbers before clicking [Do it!].
  2. Use the [Installation List] function to configure the installed control modules.
  3. Clear Fault codes.

2) The replacement Front doors modules need to be coded. This can be accomplished in one of two possible ways:

  • If the Original coding is available:
  1. Convert the original short coding from Dec to Hex. For example:

If the original 7 digit short coding in #42 was 0001205 that would convert to 4B5. Because the new controller uses a 3 Byte coding scheme the new coding value would be 0004B5. Using that same vehicle configuration example the original 7 digit short coding in #52 would be 0001204 which converts to 4B4. 0004B4 however would be used to obtain the proper 3 Byte / 6-digit length.

Post # 3 includes a short coding to long coding [Long Coding Helper] tip from NEtech

  2. Paste or type the New Coding into each of the New Front door modules followed by clicking [Do it!]. Again, make sure non-zero WSC/Importer/Equipment numbers are used.
  3. Clear Fault codes in each module.
  • If the Original coding is either NOT available -or you don't want to use a calculator:
  1. The [Long Coding Helper] can be used to configure each control module from scratch. Non-zero WSC/Importer/Equipment numbers need to be entered before clicking [Do it!].
  2. Clear Fault codes in each module.

3) At this point Address 19-CAN Gateway, 42-Door Elect, Driver and 52: Door Elect, Pass. should be configured :) The before, during and after scans should look something like the following shortened examples:

Reserved for any additional info. Perhaps for a list of Mk5 based 19-CAN Gateway controllers that do and do NOT support UDS.

  • If the Original coding is available:
1 Convert the original short coding from Dec to Hex.
If you have the [Long Coding Helper] already started, instead of the calculator, you can also copy the short coding 0001205 into LCode:
dec.png

Then press "h" and then it is in hex.
hex.png

And Copy

I wish I had read this before I replaced the module but then again it did result in my discovery of Ross-Tech. Great write up!

Someone could make some extended overview of door control modules of VAG cars. At least collect all available info together. There are so much different modifications, possible combinations etc. in Golf/Jetta MK5/MK6 and Passat B6/B7 generations . Sometimes new replacement modules can be ordered only through dealers by vehicle's VIN. But if someone already repaired or modified that car, the "correct" replacement modules will not work. Especially in modifications where CAN goes to front doors and LIN goes from front to rear. If there is no comms with rear, You can never know is LIN input of rear doors damaged or LIN output of front ones.

I just noticed that post when I realized our VW Golf (1K) Door Electronics Driver Wiki page was lacking a lot of information. We don't have door module links at all on the Mk6 Golf Wiki pages - and that's probably due to the newer Gen 4 UDS flavors introduced in 2010 on some vehicles. I'll tackle the UDS stuff on separate pages.

I'm facelifting the old VW Golf (1K) Door Electronics Driver page now to cover CAN Protocol Generation 1 through Generation 3 but I didn't even think of the LIN split! That's a common body shop repair issue and we still take a handful of calls a year when a rear won't talk because the front has wrong parts (harness, module or both). I don't want to make that page overly complicated, sometimes less is more, but I do like the LIN suggestion!

Hi guys. I'm in the process of replacing door modules on my A3 8P 06 plates. Originally I had 2 gen modules 8p0959801/2G, now I stuck in 4gen b7 modules - 3aa959701/2A. I re-pined the doors harnesses as of a3 8p facelift 3rd gen modules, but something is still not right. Windows aren't running as they should - to lower them I need to pull the button up on level 1, to raise them I need to pull the button up on level 2. Door lock/unlock button locks up as soon as the ignition is on, and I can only unlock the doors using the button, locking is not working. Furthermore if modules are coded as RHD (I drive a RHD car) mirror adjustment works opposite, axix l-r runs as up-down, and up-down as l-r. When recoded to LHD mirros adjust fine, but opposite sides - adjusting right mirror on the knob affects left mirror, and left side - right. I have no errors but one - window basic adaptation fault, obviously due to windows buttons not working properly. I wanted to set side mirrors folding on remote, but it doesn't work when coded to RHD. My gateway is 1K0 907 530 AA, its a newer one with steering angle at address 04, but I'm not sure if it's fine for this mod. Is anyone able to post b7 door module pinout?

That 1K0 907 530 AA 19 module should be capable of allowing UDS door module communication but this inquiry would be best suited in the Retrofits Sub-forum.

http://forums.ross-tech.com/forumdisplay.php?10-Retrofits

I would create a new thread there with the Auto-Scan prior to the retrofit in addition to the most recent scan in the current condition.

We can't provide wiring diagrams, component location schematics or TPI/TSBs because they are copyrighted material belonging to VW/Audi but the Official Factory Repair Information sources are listed here:
