Had this car come in from another shop, noticed the control head loose and coding says it's definitely not coded correctly. Out of all my old autoscans, I don't have one that uses the same part number and can't verify the coding.

The A/C has a shut off code for no engine speed signal, but no fault in Engine for engine speed. So I'm wondering if the coding is way off (even when I change it to what I think it should be it still doesn't work).
Can anyone suggest the proper coding for this VIN and part number?

is it possible it's the speed signal wire into the rear of the hvac unit, maybe high resistance/open circuit? I saw this same issue before on a SEAT ibiza.

Even with an incorrect coding of that module, you shouldn't have any electrical issues with the flaps.

Try coding to 17200. In the label file you'll see a reference to that being a W8-specific coding, but I can tell you my 2004 GLX with ATQ V6 was coded that way from the factory and works fine. If that doesn't work, you could try 15200.

Ignore the faulty positioning motor DTCs for the moment. The Climatronic control head in this car is notorious for declaring flap control motors faulty when they're still working okay. I think my old Passat has declared three separate flap motors faulty and the whole system works just fine. You also don't mention if anyone tried the flap position adaptation, which could also explain the faulty code. That's absolutely necessary after swapping control heads, especially a used one.

Recode, clear faults in 08 and 19, perform flap position adaptation so it's matched to this car, and then re-check behavior and fault codes.

Regardless of coding issues here, there is clear swing in voltages; based on the scan which need to be addressed ASAP.

Check connections to battery, and alternator for proper output............

Thanks for the ideas! CAN gateway keeps coming up with a had fault for no communication with HVAC and block 125 in any CAN connected module doesn't include HVAC. Since the car came in with the HVAC control head loose and no identifying part number (sticker pulled off) on the module, I've warned the customer that there is more to look at and I'm not doing it for free.

I've tried all the coding options and no change. I could only find 17200 referenced in all my old autoscans as well.

Battery and alternator are good

I'm never worried about the flap faults or the ambient air temp faults. I've had those many times with no effect to the air conditioning. I got in to the menu of the climatronic and it said the air temp sensor behind the bumper was the issue.

So it could be the speed sensor wire to the HVAC module, but I'm betting the module isn't equipped to take the CAN signal (and I'm betting it gets it's speed signal from the CAN). I'll post back up if they decide on a new HVAC module!

I think you may indeed have the wrong HVAC module.

The control head we can see installed in your Auto-Scan (3B1 907 044 C) does NOT share cross-references with the one I looked up in PL24 for this specific vehicle by VIN (3B1 907 044 J). Both show as valid for a "2001" Passat but that's the only year of overlap; -C fits older cars and -J fits newer. Parts shopping for a 2001 Passat sucks because of the mid-model year platform refresh, B5 to B5.5 if you've ever seen those terms. A 2001 can be either.

Suffix -J units are readily available for $cheap on eBay. See if your customer will try one out. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more gremlins hiding; somebody was already in there screwing with it for a reason and you're showing all sorts of other comfort-CAN comms faults. But, it should get you a lot closer.

Definitely the wrong module! Parts guy finally looked it up and told the other shop to supply a "J" version. Sure enough it works... Came coded 17200 and would not allow me to change it to 15200 so it's staying 17200. Shut off compressor code stays 0.0 and engine RPM is read just fine. Hard fault also cleared in CAN gateway.

Interesting to note measuring block 80 would not work on the "C" version.

Funny thing is, Chavez Auto Service did an evac/recarge, changed the pressure sensor, swapped the A/C relay, and finally changed the control valve (their words) before bringing it to us.

Oh and the next best thing is after I installed it, the display went blank! Turns out someone used a 2 amp fuse in position 5 (for A/C and other items). Sometimes that tree with all that shade just doesn't make you a good mechanic...

Thanks for the help guys.

Oh and the temp sensor fault went away and the CAN for HVAC is located in block 132! It was 0 with the old module and 1 with the new module.
