    Speedometer Calibration

    I have a 2010 Jetta TDI Highline and the speedo is 8% fast. I tried changing the multiplier number. Tried every one except 0. All the others seem to be for specific vehicles, some European. What does the 0 do? Is there something I am not doing?

    Hi, thanks for posting the Auto-Scan...

    It looks like the Distance Impulse Number number '0,3 and 8' are just not documented for any particular vehicle, where as the numbers '1, 2,4,5,6 and 7' are.

    So if your cluster accepts the coding change you will not hurt anything by trying.

    If your cluster does not accept any particular value, VCDS nor the factory scan tool can force it to do so.

    The label file we use for that cluster also works for other clusters that maybe installed on different vehicle types, so coding changes will need to apply to those vehicles and these changes may not work on yours.

    To understand how to do the calibration you have to understand how the values are being used/calculated. First off, a wheel/tire does a certain number of turns per kilometer. Depending on the wheel circumference (and therefor tire size/dimension) that number obviously differs. Check this thread in another forum...

    In your case, you should be able to determine which coding values corresponds with which distance impulse number by reading the "Velocity Detection - Distance Impulses" adaptation channel in the instrument cluster.

    Thank you. I know how the impulse number works and understand how different wheel diameters affect the speedometer. I was surprised to see that most of the settings were for specific models. None of the settings did anything except make the speedometer read even faster. I will try the 0 setting to see if it will do anything. Looks like VW doesn't want us to have an accurate spedo. Being an ex helicopter pilot who has always needed accurate speed info kind of infuriates me. Let you know what the 0 does.

    IMO the best way to approach this is by starting a list of coding values vs. actual distance impulse numbers (see the mentioned adaptation channel), this should give you a quicker overview about what is and isn't available resulting in an informed decision instead of blind trial and error. The fact that we currently have associated specific models with each of the coding values is merely a suggestion to our customers because different models simply come with different wheel sizes.

    That is exactly how far mine is off on my 2013 Jetta Comfortline. 100 kph on the GPS is 108 kph on my analog speedometer and 106 kph on my digital display.

    I just came back from trying all of them from 0 to 8. The 0 came back with a "Coding Rejected".

    There's two separate things to keep track of: how fast does the car think it's going, and what shows up on the analog speedometer needle. There's definitely a small, positive error designed into the analog needle display. This is present on all VWs. Any given measurement instrument will have an error band of non-zero width, and it's important this particular one never reads low for obvious legal reasons, so they deliberately design for it to err just a touch on the high side.

    Underlying that, the car still should have a pretty good idea of how fast it's going. It's been a very long time since I tried this, but I seem to recall both of my cars being pretty close to dead-on as compared to GPS. I tested in a way very similar to yours. I set the cruise at a nice round speed, and then noted the position of the analog needle as compared to my trip-meter average speed display, which I reset after setting the cruise. The average speed display should show exactly how fast the car thinks it's going without the analog needle error. Alternatively, you could log speed from the instrument cluster with VCDS.

    You seem to have a decent amount of error in the vehicle measured speed, and of course the analog needle error is cumulative with that. Given that your car seems to be coded properly, that doesn't seem like a problem. If you had electrical sensor trouble, the car would have noticed problems reconciling the transmission output speed with the four wheels' measured speeds from ABS and flagged it. You should probably be focusing on your wheels and tires.

    The speedo will have been correctly calibrated as it left the factory: with the OEM wheels, with the OEM tires, and with OEM spec inflation. Any change here can affect accuracy. Not all tires and wheels of the same theoretical spec are exactly alike. Worn out tires will roll faster than new tires. Poorly inflated tires (temperatures are dropping!) will roll faster than properly inflated tires. Etc etc, and all sources of error are cumulative. It's not difficult to make a substantial difference. Spotting such differences is actually how indirect TPMS systems work. Some cars (I've personally witnessed this on a couple of Korean cars) are so picky they start having a bunch of false traction control and ABS engagements if you have a new tire and a worn tire on the same axle.
